Speculation: Roster Building Thread: Part XX (WTF are we going to do this Off-Season edition)

Im not endorsing trading Lafreniere, just speculating what a deal with the Habs might look like. However, im not convinced Lafreniere is one of those guys who will distinguish himself in the locker room. He folded after signing a new contract this year, when the team most needed him to rise above. He needs to prove himself as far as im concerned.

Ah, gotchya.

And fair that he never played up to par this year, but I don't hold any individual guy to that fire (not even Zibanejad). The team culture sucks, and until we get some of the veteran voices out of the room, we're just farting in the wind.

That's what he was b'c:
1.) x factor of Concussions
2.) he
was
NEVER
given
ANY
opportunity
WHATSOEVER
to
play
w/ANY
talent
that
was
not
a black hole
on offense.

Let's not waste time. You don't misrepresent, I won't have to correct represent
He sucked out loud long before the concussions. He never earned any chances to play top 6. He WAS the black hole on offense.

What a game last night. All the while I'm thinking... the Panthers make moves that the Rangers refuse to do. Grabbing Marchand and Jones literally put the icing on the cake for that Panthers team. Just reminded me of the pathetic quarter (not even half) measures the Rangers come up with during the TDL and off-season. Never any bold or daring chances to make this team better.
I think going for Kane, Tarasenko and Mikkola was pretty aggressive. Honestly its easier to go for it all when you have a team that has proven 2 years in a row they have the heart to get to the Cup finals.

Laf has been linked to Montreal a million times going back to before he was drafted. They are obsessed with him because he's French Canadian. If his name was John Smith, they wouldn't have any interest.

It does seem like Gorton is acquiring all the guys who he liked in the past. Newhook. Dach. Lafreniere is probably in that group

Gorton is trying to buy low. It’s a smart plan.
Target young underperforming players who can be signed for cheap and have upside.

The veterans suck but Lafreniere, Fox, Kandre, etc. arent exactly rookies. I think letting them off the hook for their lack of competitiveness and leadership is contributing to this problem. Everyone knew Ryan Callahan was a a leader on the team when he was a rookie wearing #43. They are supposed to step up. They make a lot of money and have a lot of games under their belts.

I maintain that adding Kane after they'd already added Tarasenko threw the team off-kilter, going back to how fragile they can be. That one and the Yandle trade are always ones I think about in terms of acquiring players you don't actually have the right role to plug the player into. Eric Staal, too.

I don't disagree, though I think you also need the veterans and coaches to enable those things with younger players, and there's been a serious lack of that around the team the last few years. If Tortorella and Drury don't enable him, Callahan likely never progresses as a leader, no matter his natural abilities.

I agree about Kane and Stall regarding roles. Not so much about Yandle but we were agressive going after Kane, Tank and Mikola all in 1 year. Hard to say we weren't.

Callahan, Dubinsky, McDonagh, etc. Led with their play. We can make every excuse in the book for our young veterans but none of them give the impression that they are giving it their al on every shift do they? We all watch them.

We definitely were but it was over-agressiveness, really. The Yandle one... we didn't utilize him correctly in regards to the PP, played him on the 3rd pair, and moved out a guy perfect for the 3rd pairing role in the trade. Yes, Yandle was a better player than John Moore, but too much of a better player to make that swap out in the lineup work right. He stepped up big in the playoffs when other guys were hurt, but the next season showed how little of a fit in the lineup he was.

I have a problem conflating the issues from the season with previous ones. Before this season, my answer was yes. I would also say that Lafrenière came in with the natural leadership feel to him and it's slowly eroded away over the last several years.
