Speculation: Roster Building Thread: Part XX (WTF are we going to do this Off-Season edition)

John Tavares just continues to ho hum his way to a ppg season. He's also a very complete player and playing behind the bug guys in Toronto meant he was tasked with more defensive responsibilities. 58% on FO's too.

That's a guy who I could see, should Drury actually be able to move Zibanejad and Panarin, being of some interest to the Rangers front office.

A team more skilled than us just got dominated in game 7, while going 10% on the powerplay through-out the series. Winning is hard.

Florida, going back three years now has:

Shut down Kucherov twice
Shut down Pastrnak
Shut down Matthews/Marner/Nylander twice
Shut down Panarin/Zibanejad
Smoked Carolina 4-0

You can talk about disappearing in the playoffs all you want (Panarin & Mika) but, let's be honest, Florida has plowed through multiple superstars multiple times.

They are a GOOD team. No, GREAT team.

Florida, Edmonton and Dallas arent young. I care more about contract terms and production than age.
yeah those teams already have a real core. adding tavares and marchand to this sorry group is just rearranging deck chairs, you really think those two would make the team even a little better than Mika and kreider?

You wanna talk about playoff disappointments? Tavares is a weak playoff performer. 53 points in 75 career games. Marchand is obviously a good playoff performer but he’s 37 and is obviously declining.

Exactly, there are plenty of examples of players older than either Kreider or Zibanejad doing just fine in the playoffs. Burns, Marchand, Staal, Benn, Duchene, Henrique, Bobrovsky, etc...

Let's just get better and harder to play against.

All teams that win have multiple over 30 vets.

The Rangers are a much better team if you replace Mika and Kreider with tavares and Marchand. Tavares had 38 goals and 74 points this year, Mika can barely even play center anymore. Marchand at 37 is a much better player than Kreider, and plays with the edge the team is looking for. Being young =/= being good, This team isnt rebuilding. Plus signing veterans to shorter term deals allows you to keep young assets.

All jokes aside, it will be very interesting to see what the Leafs do this offseason. They have kicked it back with minor tweaks for the past 7 or so seasons and they've got past round 1 twice (i think?).

They have around $70M committed to 15 players and have to re-up Knies who will likely get between $6-7M depending on length of contract.

They have longer term contracts on some D who are not good at all. Not sure if they try to shuffle that around.

We know JT I gone. I wouldn't be shocked if they let Marner go and redistribution that cap for better D and 2nd/3rd line forwards.

It won't happen, but a K. Miller+ (say Othmann) for Knies would work for both teams based on needs
I think (whether due to offer sheet or not) his AAV will be closer to 9 than 6.

i could squint my way into signing marchand depending on the contract but tavares is a massive hell no. dude is a choker. and frankly i’d bet that mika out produces him next season.

If we take Tavares back, we need to add another player with speed. We're not a fast team and we don't play fast. We can't get slower. He's still a good, smart player, for the right price. But we definitely need another player who can skate coming back if we're going to continue adding slower players.

I wouldn't touch Tavares.

If they're going to add a 2/3C, it's gotta be someone who has a ton of overlap in responsibilities with Vinny because Trocheck really needs to play less and that isn't JT. I don't really care about his speed or lack there of, the fit just isn't there.

I'd be in on Marchand though. He can still provide a ton of value in the middle six and I don't care that hes a W, they should be looking to push a few guys out anyway.

What was the reason you said Lindgren would return a 7th without salary retention? I'll wait until tomorrow. And, regardless, you were wrong.

Same thing with Nieves.

You can make excuses, aka "reasons", all you want but you were WRONG about this and a whole lot of other crap.

The difference between most of us and you, however, is that we own up to it and you just compose 150 word answers that say if this, if that, what if, why that, etc... instead of acknowledging what actually happened.

Just man up and "whoops" it like the rest of us. I make mistakes all the time. :P

Good night to you as well.
Again, I said my call that we'd get a 7th was wrong. HOWEV dominant consideration remains THEY SHOULD HAVE SOLD HIGH ON HIM YRS ago. If they did that, that would have cause + effect selling him now for much much less

Not gonna repeat Nieves

Been saying this for the better part of a year. McDavid and Eichel will never hit free agency. They'll either sign or be part of a trade & sign. Players like this almost never hit the market.

Relying on them to be available as part of a plan moving forward is bad management.

Edmonton could trade McDavid but he does not have to sign with the new club unless it is the Rangers. Then he does have to sign. I insist! :D
