Speculation: Roster Building Thread: Part XX (WTF are we going to do this Off-Season edition)

If that were the case, he wouldn't be a top4 defenseman. His mistakes get greatly exaggerated in how egregious and frequent they are.

Not saying they aren't more frequent than an average top4 D; they likely are. But the team is better for having in the top4 (paired with Fox even, imo).

I watch A LOT of hockey games and maybe my eye is fixated on Miller given that he's a Ranger but I'm not seeing his level of gaffes all that often elsewhere on top 4 D's.

I'd love to know how many goals against he's directly responsible for. And, not that this team was any good, I'd bet they would've made the playoffs without them.

That being said, I won't miss Laviolette's "defensive system" because the Rangers defense was horrendous and they frequently looked like musical chairs out there and not knowing where to sit down.

If KAM stays, hopefully a new system will be to his benefit

This does play out in the numbers as well. His High Danger Chances For % is lower than most of his other relevant statistics.

But paired with Fox, they still had ~63% HDCF%, and ~64.7% xGF%. And they outscored opponents 19-12 together.

His numbers away from Fox must be quite bad, but that aligns with every other defenseman on the team. He was still Fox's best partner by quite a margin.

Miller is better then Provorov.

Miller is the defensive punching bag here. Ive seen him blamed for "egregious" mistakes that weren't his fault. Blown coverages that weren't his guy. Breakdowns where he is blamed for not making a better play on a 3 on 1 low meanwhile hello everyone! Why is it an odd man situation in the first place?

Keep Miller and Fox. Find 2 other real top 4 dmen. You'll be shocked by how much better everyone is.

is there a world where we could add Lindholm and McDonagh?
Probably the one where we trade both Kreider and either Miller or Mika.

I like your D corps a lot from your addition to the post. That's an actual top 5 blueline on paper if guys perform to expectations. We'd have a skeleton crew at wing with Mika gone, but wings are much easier to get at the deadline.

Think Miller would still be in the top 4 no matter what but the personnel works.

I am sure these guys don’t actually intend to suck. I just think that they lose that ‘eye of the tiger’ sometimes. That’s of course a weakness. But just saying they’re not actively “quitting” on the team/fans/organization. They’re like classic cars in a way. When they run, they perform great. But it takes more to keep them at their peak performance. That’s just their nature. They really did want to play better.
Again, not dismissing their crap seasons. Just not going to get upset at them either. Rangers need to find better engines.
I mean, that’s FAIR. I’m certainly not in their heads. It’s somewhat of an emotional reaction on my part, coupled to the rumors about what’s gone on in the room.
But I certainly have no absolute knowledge and don’t mean to pretend to.

There's probably some disappointment in there too. We all were hoping he would take steps to being a 1D, but it hasn't happened.

Just feels like throwing the baby out with the bathwater to move on from a young top4 D, even if he isn't going to improve anymore from here (which is far from a given).
It all depends on the return. I would not deal him just to deal him, even though I don’t think he’ll ever put it all fully together.

100%. No player is untradeable.

I just have a feeling based on many of the opinions about him, that what people's thresholds are for that return isn't high enough for the player we'd be giving up.

McDonagh Fox
Lindholm Schneider
KAM Borgen

pretty decent d corp.
Lindholm trade clause and ability to play 80 games scares me, especially when it comes to what we would have to give up. I don't think a swap on Zibanejad works for them.

They really need centers so it may actually work for them
The need a legit 1c, and if Zibanejad is viewed to be that, or a high end 2c, NYR wouldn't be trading him for Lindholm.

Unless Kreider is going and convinces Zibanejad to come along, I don't see why he waives for Boston. And if both are going, that's a lot of money they're taking.

Also, Rangers signing KAM to then play him on the 3rd pair seems a bit odd here. Sure, it's a 1 year wait to get back into the top 4 once McDonagh is gone, but I'm not sure that's going to work for either side when it comes to the $ amount.

And I've seen blind clears, clears through the middle, picking up the wrong man, passing to the other team, making the wrong reads, passing to the wrong teammate to get the team out of the defensive zone, carrying the puck too long and in the wrong direction, etc...

Better defenseman do make a team better, you got me there.

He can make one mistake and people will assign that stigma to him for the next half of the season.

Meanwhile someone like Lindgren could do 5 things that were just as dangerous but less obvious and another 3 things that were as obvious and it'd be mostly crickets from the same people.

And it isn't hard to be better than Provorov. He sucks.

Balls.
