Speculation: Roster Building Thread: Part XX (WTF are we going to do this Off-Season edition)

People balking at a third round pick is peak comedy. Oh yeah guys. THATS the line you draw in the sand.
The reason I do not want to go that high is 3 fold despite me loving the idea of McD coming back.

1. We have traded a lot of picks over the years and our farm system is not rated high.

2. McD is 35 years old.

3. It is only a 1 year rental. His contract ends in 2026.

Why would Tampa trade McDonagh? They just brought him back and he had a really good year there. I don't see why they would unless they're absolutely desperate for cap space.
This is what I'm wondering about. That source that posted it is just some blogger spitballing so it's not like it's an actual rumor or anything.

If he were available I'd be all over him as I think he'd be the perfect partner for Fox, I was advocating for the Rangers to re-acquire him when Tampa was originally moving him a couple years ago but the cap wouldn't work out then.

It would also be completely hilarious to find ourselves 7 full seasons post-letter and have the two pieces in the biggest tear down trade of that deadline, JT Miller AND Ryan McDonagh, both back on the Rangers so for that reason alone I want it to happen.

1) You can get a 3rd round pick anytime you want to. The Rangers just got 2 for a month + a playoff run of Reilly Smith who no one cared about all year.

2) They just paid a 2nd for a "year" of Reilly Smith (which they then replenished with 2 3rds, effectively getting 3/4 of a year of a middle six wing for free). Paying a 3rd to upgrade Carson Soucy to Ryan McDonagh is a slam dunk no brainer in any economy. Your worst case scenario is to get that pick back at the trade deadline.

3) This is a feature, not a bug, for a guy McDonagh's age.

Zibs and any current players aside if I'm the boss I would say be unhappy on your own time. Be unhappy at home. Don't bring your unhappiness in to the office, on the ice or in to the locker room when you are being paid by us. Nobody likes working with a Debbie Downer. It brings down the work environment morale and often the productivity. If I was the boss I would say either fake a smile at work or go find a new location to work.
If I was the boss, which I am, I would take my time to try to understand the issue, which I have done many times. Employees are the most valuable asset a company has. You dont just discard a valuable asset because of ego.

That is good but it has nothing to do with ego. I have worked for and owned business's. I want everyone to have a happy work environment for everyone. If an individual is a Debbie Downer and will not change than I would ask that person to move on. I had a secretary like that. People dreaded walking in to the door when coming to work because of her. A person like that brings down the morale at the office and that hurts productivity imo.

Those are all good points. I'd still try to save the pick if possible but I would be fine if we got McD back so you have changed my mind on the 3rd. :)

This is the Adam Fox deal all over again where the entire board was adamant they would never do more than a 4th rounder for his rights, that a 3rd was a bridge too far. For Adam Fox.

We shouldn't have traded anything for him, he was interested in playing for new york so we wasted picks

Saying I don’t think we should HAVE to add a 3rd is hardly a “line in the sand.” A 1st, maybe even a 2nd, yeah, hard f*** no. Line in the sand. Saying I think including a 3rd is an overpay in the situation is just that: I think it would be an overpay in the situation and I’d try to avoid it.

If we move Kreider for picks or prospects, could we sign Boeser? Familiar with Miller, shoot first player. I'm always in the "no asset" acquisition is better than making a deal club

This place reeks of "rude to wait staff" sometimes.
I think the real problem is people drawing parallels between their experience with what's normal working regular jobs as regular people, like all of us are and comparing that to elite professional athletes, most of whom have never done anything in their life other than play a sport and they're playing that sport at the highest level in the world and making top .0001% salary levels.

Thinking you have any idea about the inner workings of what it's like to be a professional athlete is just delusional. Mentally, physically, what it means to be part of a team, how to function in that environment, how to handle the pressure, how to deal with injuries, etc all with the pressure of wanting to win, be at your best, make as much money as possible...

It's another world we literally can't even comprehend so trying to make apples to apples comparisons to what we know as normal people dealing with our problems is just foolish.

That is not me. I feel incredibly blessed in life. I try to be extremely nice to waitstaff and also tip too well (I need to stop that). Even got my car salesperson a very nice meal in October when usually it is the other way around. :)
Not you specifically, but this board's conception of the labor side of things is a bit gross sometimes. They're still real people.

Sometimes you do have to butch up. Guys get traded. Still, to be completely dismissive about it because the player makes a lot of money is crazy. Yeah, the salaries are out of control. So is the job difficultly. They play in the best league in world.

@Siddi is right. I would personally respond much better to communication than the equivalent of a hand fart.

I have been vocal about not loving Zibanejad's game but he was really good in the second half. They asked him about the first half and they got an answer. An honest one for a change. I don't think his answer warrants the piling on that we've seen.

I’ve worked every position in a restaurant from dishwasher to chef (and even some management) in the back and busboy to bartender in the front, so no, that’s not me. Hahahah. But yeah, if my waitperson just walked up to my table bored, not giving a shit, didn’t bother writing anything down, and got everything wrong I just might be pissed off. And rightly so. My waitperson is TRYING, maybe busy, overworked, and f***ed a bunch of stuff up? No worries. And probably a little extra tip because obviously they were having a bad enough night.

I agree they are real people. I often say hockey is a great game but the NHL is a tough business. A player has a right to be unhappy but not a right to give less than his all or a right to try to bring down the rest of the team. That is not fair to the fans nor the players teammates. For me it is not about the amount of money. It is that they are paid to do a job. If an employee in any job is not giving a legitimate effort sooner or later they will often be asked to leave. Nobody is not saying you can not speak to the employee to try to improve things but at the end of the day the players are paid to give their all. If they do not give their best efforts they should be replaced by somebody that would love to have that job imo.

id give up a 3rd just to get rid of Soucy so i'd be ecstatic if they also got McDonagh in the deal. i already wanted him back a few years ago when TB was trying to dump him the first time.

Im pretty sure I remember Nashville and Tampa making a trade for McD because he let Nashville brass know that it was a perferred destination for him and his family... I dont think he would be happy coming here

You bring up good points but I wouldnt be as dismissive of where some of the inputs are coming from. Without giving away to much, I am active in a field where we generally speaking strive to "make as much money as possible". My employees or co-workers as I prefer to see them as are all in the elite echelon of what they do. They all have that mindset of an elite athlete. Without that drive, they would never have reached where they are now. And some of them get paid bonuses similar to an star NHL player.

I would never assume that their salary is what drives them to perform well. The salary is only an incentive to get them to show up everyday and in some cases to keep poachers/headhunters away. What we do together once they show up is when the magic happens. I need to succesfully share my vision with them in a way so they feel included. Communication and lock-step. That is imho how you succesfully manage a "team".

But then again what do I know :)
