Speculation: Roster Building Thread: Part XX (WTF are we going to do this Off-Season edition)

Back in jan-feb when Mika was leading the team in xGF the argument from the haters was that fancy stats dont matter. He needs to produce real points. When presented with the fact that Mika since 2019 is 11th in scoring among centers, all of a sudden points dont matter.

He is virtually top 10 in his position amongst the best players in the world and we are still arguing if he ever was elite or not, or the more moronic idea some of you peddle that he never was 1C.

I am all for discussing him underachieving and not playing up to his standards, like all of that is fair but some of you have lost the plot completely. If he would have played to expectation he would be top 5 easily.

Think about it, with all the shit he gets and sometimes deservedly so, he is STILL top 10 in the league. He is that f***ing good.

Brodin is never getting traded like ever, Brodin continues to be one of the best shutdown dman in the NHL and Bill GUERIN will never pay someone who doesn't play D. They aren't taking on Kreider either as they are going after Boeser.
Fun fact: Brodin scored for the 3rd straight game in Swedens win over Finland today. He scored 4 goals for Minnesota in 55 games this season.

Over the last 3 seasons, Zibanejad is 51st in 5v5 points among C's. He's 71st in 5v5 points/60 mins among C's. Granted a fair few are CINO's but still. When you're getting outproduced at 5v5 by Chandler Stephenson, Max Domi, and Morgan Geekie while making 8 mil and you visibly stop putting in any sort of effort on ice, people are gonna want you gone.

That's not even to mention his complete lack of physicality and numerous mind numbing turnovers.

Moore played less than 10 games and is 20 years old. Smith has barely sniffed the C position. Protas has been mainly a winger.
The question was “centers you’d take ahead of bennett”

Smith has barely sniffed C because he and celebrini both started together, he’s a top 6 center easily, just that celebrini is a 2 way stud.

The context was talking about Bennett being at that position and centers you'd take over him. Centers that you rank in that position to be better. There's no point adding in prospects and 1st time rookies who may be better at some point when given the opportunity.

fine , I can pull Moore off the list, that’s a fair retraction.
Smith deserves to stay as he’s a top 6 center who’s playing wing on a shit team rn.

That's 12 right there. Who you taking off that list?

We acquired a center and moved Zibanejad to wing. There is no way he's still a top 10 center.

Mika is worth his contract if he produces at the rate he finished the season with. There's something to be said that he fell off for awhile and looked so bad, and there's something to be said that he rebounded and sustained a strong performance afterward. It's reasonable to expect a lot from him, and if his performance goes back to the way it was at its worst, that's a different story. What he's done most recently is what matters most, and what he's done most recently was nothing like how he started, and deserves a little more faith, particularly with a coaching change. Fans have quit on Mika because he appeared to quit on the team, fair, but Mika evidently, has not quit on the team if his rebound is indicative of anything, so some folks need to follow suit on their opinions of Mika. At least a little.

As a side note, as a general rule, a lot of people are going to have to adjust how they view AAVs as the cap goes up a lot this year (+7.5M), again next year (+8.5M), and again the year after (+9.5) I don't know how the standards will be set exactly, or how contracts will be scaled based on player's roles. But we know the cap goes up by 25.5 million over the next three years.

disagree w/da bold
Meeka OCCASIONALLY performed up to par and rarely par + ON OFFENSE ONLY
at all times HIS D SUCKED ASS
His effort was subpar
And it was all on him and his WILFUL arrogance
No valid reason whatsoever for his behavior

he can kiss my ass now, and the rest of his career
he's a cancer we need to move even if we eat half and take bupkis back

mic drop

bern is busy peeps
don't make me have to repeat myself
thanx

His production since 2019 is virtually top 10. Are we just going to pretend that is not the case?

I would remove the following:

Hughes
Eichel
Stutzle
Aho

The only time Zibanejad has been a t10 center in the league was that 2 months stretch before the Covid shutdown where he was scoring on every shot he took.
And yet he is top 10 in scoring since 2019.

Donato, ROR, Hayton, Geekie, Pinto, & Cozens over Bennett is certainly a choice.

You also have guys like Stutzle & Jarvis who aren't centers.

We acquired a center and moved Zibanejad to wing.
And also, you know very well that Lavi played them as hybrid Cs. They basically split center duties 50/50 when playing on the same line. And then he was moved to 3C and I would bet you that he will be back playing 2C on opening night because Sully is not a dumdum like Lavi.

That screams elite, top 10 center to me. :eyeroll:

He was elite at one point, i disagree with those who say this is who he always was. He fell off hard. And it can't all be attributed to just age and/or injury

Ryan finally made a good point. The Rangers have always been a soft team except for Roger Neilson years when the Rangers had Mark Messier, Adam Graves, Tie Domi. Kris King, Jeff Buekeboom. etc.

The Rangers need to find the next Sam Bennett.

With Anaheim hiring Joel Quenneville last week and Pat Verbeek under pressure to make the playoffs, does Anaheim become an option for Panarin? Quenneville was his first NHL head coach in Chicago. Panarin was interested in the Panthers in 2019 when they had just hired Quenneville. Ryan Strome is in Anaheim. I remember reading Panarin and Strome had become good friends off the ice. Jacob Trouba is there.

Mason McTavish would add some level nastiness to the Rangers. He competes hard. Trevor Zegras is another smallish finesse player. McTavish would be the Rangers Sam Bennett.

McTavish is playing well for Anaheim and there's absolutely no reason he would be available.
