Speculation: Roster Building Thread: Part XX (WTF are we going to do this Off-Season edition)

The problem with Bennet isn't that we would have to overpay. Sam Bennett, more often than not, has found a way to be productive during the playoffs. Teams will want that. We're going to have to overpay no matter what. Ideally you would like to be able to find them in the draft or make a smart trade that works in your favor, but if you can't, free agency is your only shot at landing them.

The problem with acquiring Bennet is that we don't have the pieces in place for him to do his thing, so he's going to be forced into playing a game where he won't be as effective. When Panarin is gone and Zibanejad struggles, are we tossing Bennett on the ice to be our hero? I don't see it working. But not because of the money.

Bennett would be goodrow signing only 10x worse.

Hes gonna get paid significantly more, and he’s not a guy capable of being more than a 3 or 4c

He’s great at what he does, but only works with limited ice time.

As you say “Hes a luxury”

Rongos “development” track tends to have that effect .
I don't want him to be overwhelmed by NHL speed and size if he is not ready. Id be thrilled if he is ready but I will wait and see in training camp. He is young and thin. Also did seem a step or two slow in his brief stay here. Always fun to have a new player but I can be patient.

I thought he looked good in the first game. He was going to net. Looked active and made a couple of nice passes. Then Lavy pulled the Rangers special. It doesn't take long for our coaches to mess with their confidence.

I think he had a few bright moments. Some of the opening nights for good and bad can be about adrenaline. What I saw was about size and speed (slow first step specifically) so it was not related to confidence or coaches. If Gabe is ready to play in the NHL that would be great but many good players spent time in the AHL. He just turned 20 this week. I do not want to overwhelm him.

Machine is underrating Trocheck a bit, but he's right that Miller-Tro doesn't set us apart from the pack as a 1-2 combo which is why we need a sterling third line.

A lt of you have good plans to sign a big UFA or make a big trade for a LD and that's good and needed. But we really need both.

1) 3 lines of great depth
2) A new top 2 left D

In order for me to even start to think of considering us a comptitive roster next year. I've yet to see proposals that can do both these things in one offseason, which is not a cause for optimism.

What I wouldn't give for a random Kevin Hayes freebie to descend from heaven and give us an instant rookie ELC contributor in the top 9. Still praying that in the right situation Othmann could give us 20-20 from a solid scoring third line next year. I think that will require a good center, and perhaps one more quality wing on the 3rd as well.

Also... "Ain't nobody signing McDavid. Go on, git"
I think this summarizes why a true rebuild... like a REAL one is needed

Won't happen & we all know that but it's what's needed because this roster & farm aren't close & nothing will change that anytime soon.

Fair enough, but I'm not sure that he had that issue in college. Maybe he was just being tentative or thinking too much. He had to play against better/faster players, so definitely an adjustment for him. I don't mind if he starts out in the AHL either.

College is a good training ground but the leap to the NHL is substantial. Keep in mind McD, Zooks, Kreider, Hagelin, Fast, etc all spent time in the AHL before being ready and Gabe only spent 2 years (around 70 games total) in college. I'm not saying Gabe has to spend time in the AHL but lets wait and see how he looks in the fall and then we can make that decision. When I say we I mean myself and the coaching staff. :D

World Championships:

Parssinen had a goal yesterday for Finland. Sykora had an assist today. Garand didn't play (he played yesterday) for Canada. Cuylle didn't have any points.

Zib has 3 goals in 2 games so far.

Parssinen plays in a bit.

Parssinen got the game winning goal in OT to lift Finalnd over France.

If look at the young players coming through the system, I think it’s pretty evident that the next iteration of the bottom-6 and perhaps 1-2 top-6 complimentary guys are going to be higher energy, PIA players. Especially at forward.

The NHL team has Trochek, Miller and Cuylle already as well as Edstrom and Rempe.

Berard and Othmann should be NHL players next year.

Chmelar, Roobreck and Sykora all are players I would label as bringing some tenacity and physical play.

That’s not to say that Bennett wouldn’t be a good addition, cap hit and contract aside, but if we’re looking towards the future version of this team, allocating $7m in cap space to a guy who likely will be that 2nd/3rd line physical wing spot that may be better filled from within.

This organization doesn’t need a middle-6 winger. It’s got those on the way in what appears to be spades. It needs a couple of top-4 d-men

Nashville has multiple late 1sts. The core group they have there kinda demands a competitive roster now rather than in 2-3 years approach. Not saying that they are gonna push all their chips in but it seems highly unlikely that they move guys like Stamkos or Josi. Could one of those late 1sts be in play for Kreider in some sort of deal? Seems unlikely Nashville would find its way on to Kreider's limited no trade clause.

Kreider feels like he will certainly be the first domino to fall. Writing has been on the wall for a while. Recent articles kind of cement that. Easiest to move of the big names considering clauses.

After Kreider is gets a bit fuzzy. Exploring movement for guys like Panarin or Zib isn't really something you can shop, because it would be conditioned on them waiving for an agreed upon destination, and that typically isn't even sought until a trade is nearing the finishing touches. It also wouldn't be prudent to pour a majority of time into those baskets, but rather have the feelers out there and see what materializes.

Have to imagine the most active forefront that comes forth after the Kreider situation is handled is heavily exploring the market for a hockey trade involving one of K'andre or Schneider. Lafreniere's name could come up in there too.

I do not. I want nothing to do with that prick.
I'd take him. YES he gets tagged with a lot of dirty hits. But he's in the Cuylle camp of qualities we need more of. We need his flavor of competition, drive, grit. I like how he went after Zadorov late in the season. No hesitation.

I just want nothing to do with the salary AAV his is going to get.

More playoff games tend to do that…
Yeah but I think one or two rounds of playoff revenue is all they aim for.

There is hard, expensive work to get past that. And most teams really don’t care as long as they get that playoff round or two of revenue.

I really doubt that. Maybe the owners feel that way but I guarantee you anyone running a team is doing their best to put together a winning team with what they have to work with.
