Speculation: Roster Building Thread: Part XX (WTF are we going to do this Off-Season edition)

You know Lafreniere sucks and we sit there and say "well gee if he just played 29 minutes a game and never left the ice on the powerplay..."

Will Cuylle actually did that in 2025!

Lafreniere had 4 powerplay points as the 6th man. Cuylle had 3 as the 9th man.

The only full-time Rangers who scored at a better rate per minute than Cuylle are Panarin and JT**.

**Believe it or not, the non-full-time Ranger is Juuso Parsinen who led the club in p/60 because he had that one game where he had like four points in eight minutes. The more you know.

Boosted or not...he was 2nd on the team in scoring. It's a simple point.

And there's no argument here....a productive Mika is better than a non productive Mika.... but again:
1. You really need his production because we're just not a very deeply talented team

2. You can take up whatever issues you have with his game, as legitimate as they might be, but his contract is signed. He has his NMC. Getting him out of here will not be easy, and may not be very fruitful.
Sure. If he starts play next season the way he ended this one he can help the team. If he starts like he played the majority of the last two seasons, give him 3rd line minutes and maybe PP2 time. Give Cuylle, Gabe (if he’s up here) and Laf pp1. I give zero shits if anyone thinks they’ve “earned it,” it is in the team’s interest to try to develop their powerplay skills. They are the future. 30-40 second pp shifts starting outside the O zone is a bullshit barometer for what they can possibly bring.

Again...I think we both agree his play should be better. Where we disagree, is that I don't see the options for better replacements.

His ESP/60 was ranked 4th amongst our scoring forwards (behind Miller, Panarin, & Cuylle). I dont think that's easily replaceable in the situation that we have with our roster inflexibility and subpar prospect pool.

The point I'm making is that he's not a free agent here. He's already signed to a big contract. Pretending we can just walk away or simply choose to spend the money on another player and replace his production is very wishful thinking.

Also, he didn't get 50% of his points from the pp.
Nope. He did get just over 30% of his points on the pp though.

he also has much more of a history of showing up when it matters
Care to elaborate? Zibanejad is 3rd behind only Messier and Leetch in PPG pacing in the playoffs.
I can't see why Detroit would do that. Larkin is only 28 years old. In the last 8 seasons, Zibaenjad has broken 30 goals, twice. Larkin has just put up 4 straight 30 goal seasons. Rangers would have to really add here even in a problem for problem scenario. You're not getting a Larkin back for Zibanejad right now.
You forgot a 40+ goal season in those 8 seasons and a 27 goal season in 56 games.

There was also a 29 goal season but who counts anyways.

As did the rest of the Leagues top players.
Ummm. Not that I’m going fact check to find that some scored less, (Panarin was at 29% which is close enough) but does that change the fact of it? Hahaha.
I DO think it’s weird that you are putting Mika among the leagues top players this year… because by any objective measure he certainly was not.

I think the point is that it’s not uncommon for someone on pp1 to get that large a percentage, not that he’s a top player

That’s cool, but nowhere did I say it was uncommon. So… ??? And saying so do THE REST of the top players in the league, certainly implies that Mika is one of them… he ain’t.
In fact I did not say if it was good or bad either. Just that power play points were 30% of Mika’s scoring, not 50%.

It is way too much to do and wouldn't happen, but moving all the following would be ideal for me

Kreider, Zib, Panarin, Lafreniere, Schneider

I forgot nothing, Mrs. Zibanejad. Detroit doesn't touch this and you know it.

This may surprise you but…

If Cooper ever did go to Utah, I’d get on I’d get on line to interview Tourigny. He’s a damn good coach.
He worked miracles & held them together when they were dealing with Meruelo's bullshit. Really developed the young guys & built them into a competitive group.

Is Drury smart enough to pursue him, however?

All the Cooper talk seems more like it'd be when his contract expires in 2026. The Rangers probably won't be waiting until then to hire a new coach (whether it's COoper or Tourigny)

I’d be more interested in hiring people from their analytics department that made their internal salary cap tool
