Speculation: Roster Building Thread: Part XX (WTF are we going to do this Off-Season edition)

Weird moment during Edstrom's exit interview where they ask him about his injury and he was vague about it "lower body injury" so then they shift their tactics and ask him if he had surgery. Ed looks off to the side, I'm 99% sure he got the nod from someone in PR before answering "Yeah" to which all in the room break out in laughter, presumably acknowledging that exchange. It feels like he would like to talk about it openly but for some reason can't? I can't imagine what types of lower body surgeries would both be considered private or something to not disclose (insurance reasons?) and keep him out that long.
The Rangers don't like their players discussing injuries.

Boyle went after Fox on the pod. Mollie was discussing her conversation with Fox. Adam says all of the right things but does nothing to change it. You are getting $9.5M so do something about it. Adam blends in with everyone else. That's a problem. Leetch was a quiet guy too but played like an animal in the Rangers heyday. Messier was able to get Leetch to reach a higher level. We were watching game 3 and 4 against Vancouver on Easter Sunday. Leetch was such a great, great player. You sometimes forget how brilliant Leetch was. It's a shame the Rangers won just one Cup with Messier and Leetch.

At the end of the day its on the players to perform. The team that Drury put together this year, on paper, should have easily made the playoffs. It's not Drury's fault that Mika, Kreider, Fox threw a pity party for 80% of the year and packed it in. All those guys cared about were exterior factors instead of what they get paid millions of dollars to do, play the game.

I don't think Drury is a great GM by any means, but to place the sole blame on him is ridiculous. Nothing is ever good enough for Mika and Kreider, there is always finger pointing. Not once have they ever said "I need to be better".
Yeah. I’m entertaining the belief that the only way forward was to blow it all up this way. Finish the spring cleaning and I think we might have a punchers chance next year.

The latest Blue Seat podcast just dropped and I found it pretty satisfying . The three of them , especially Brooks, didn't hold back. Also, Boyle failed to hide his contempt for Zibs. LOL, misery loves company.
Interesting. What did Boyle say? I was very open to the idea that Mika could be part of the solution but I appreciate I know nothing.

Leetch especially. What a monumental waste in the mid-late 90's and early 2000's.

EF mentioned Colorado offered Panarin a four year contract worth $13M AAV in 2019 on their long 32T podcast from last Saturday. They were concerned about their other contract extensions in the future. He was answering a podcast listener question if teams will offer more money and lesser term with the salary cap increasing.

Panarin would probably waive his NMC for Colorado.

Necas has been quiet in the Dallas series so far.

Lindgren was the Avs best player.

Is Tocchet the Rangers top choice? He would probably bring Adam Foote with him to NY. Sullivan is staying. No Quenneville. Torts make no sense. I don't see David Carle leaving Denver to coach the Rangers. A first time HC. Depends if the Rangers plan to clean house this summer. The first time HC will be second guessed by Mika on every decision. Quinn was too tough. Too involved. A micromanager, He was in the room too much. Gallant was too hands off. The players wanted more structure. Laviolette was supposed to be more disciplined and structured. He was tuned out after one season. Brooks was right about this group and the coaches.

The Flyers will be very interested in Tocchet. JT Miller and Tocchet had a very good relationship in Vancouver. Tocchet and Foote know Soucy very well. Tocchet won the Jack Adams last season.

How about Mika for head coach?

To be fair, that's Mika's physique

Mika: JT you skipped exit interviews. Tsk tsk.

JT: Well you skipped weights.

He wasnt a fan of Mikas comment about wanting the management to communicate better with the players.

Shut up and play hockey pretty much.
Agree. As many have said, this isn’t some office. This is supposed to be a collection of elite level pros. Different standards. Sure, good management could be difference between a second round loss and a finals appearance. But this is much more basic.

I’ve been waiting to listen to it until I’m in the right headspace, because apparently it’s a doozy, but one constant I noticed this year was just how much former players hated this team.

Maloney, Micheletti, Ferraro, Boyle, Valiquette, etc. None of them could hide their disgust with what the roster did this year by flat out quitting.

If just a few of our players could find in themselves some of what Tocchet brought every game ...we would be a pretty good club and a lot harder opponent to face . Right now outside of a couple...we have become a spineless hockey club and the oone guy that we think can fight....can't fight his way out of a paper bag but he does try like Brian Boyle did .

A spineless club....that needs addressing and to do that we need a culture change and some leaders on the ice . It's not about winning or losing a fight...but don't run from one . I really doubt Drury can get it done......prepare for more dark years and lots of traded drafts .....it sucks cheering for this team . The fans also need a huge kick in the ass ....they should be on their play at every game and soon enough the message will hit home .

Vancouver sucks and was the only team that imploded as much as we did behind the scenes.

Before that, he coached Arizona. 22nd in xGF% during his tenure.

Before that, he coached Tampa, where you guessed it, they f***ing sucked.

He's won 286 out of 638 games coached. He's coached a team not bottom ten in xGF% once out of nine seasons.

He's the worst regular coach in the NHL. Vibes, the complete series. All yelling, no results.

Some of you would love him.

Add Brooks to that list.
He said this was the least likable team he's ever covered.

He didn’t go after him, he made the same kind of critiques he made in general about the team and praised Fox but basically said he and the whole team have to play harder and that they’re soft. Whatever it takes stop being soft
The only one I think really went after was Mika

A lot of truth to what you’ve said here. But there are also perfectly good players who fall off a cliff at 34. Brad Richards, Vinny Lecavalier, the list of burn outs by 35 is just as long as the list of stars that stay close to their best self until 37-38, if not longer.

So with a guy like Miller, it’s just a gamble.

100% agreed, and I don't mean to gloss over that

I don't know - I look around the league and various GM's "treatment" of players etc...

Stamkos wanted to stay in TB and they said "No, we're good". Team scores the most goals in the league and breezes into the playoffs. And those players (Hedman, etc...) have played as long or longer as Mika and Kreider.

Carolina loses Necas. And Rantannen. No problem.

McDonagh returns to the team that jettisoned him into the sun. No problem.

Marchand leaves his Boston legacy behind and moves on. I'm not reading about the players in Boston quitting because he was traded.

And, honestly, the Rangers did what was best for the Rangers. They got rid of a 3.6M contract that had four goals last year and was just as bad this year. Trouba morphed into an overpaid 8.5M 3rd pair defenseman. Whatever was lost "in the room" should've been covered by the vets "in the room" with letters on their chests instead of moping around for the balance of the season.

I've never seen anything like this in professional sports. Ridiculous.

Yelling would be doing more than either our our last 2 coaches did at least. But I don’t want him.

Would love to take a shot at a young guy , another Carberry but the Rongos will go for the big name for sure

If the rangers hire tocchet I might not watch them next season. He’s torts with an even worse offensive system. Give me jay woodcroft.

I do get that the players are annoyed, because especially the Goodrow thing was really an unorthodox way of doing business, probably the first time it was done in league history that way. And while no rules were broken, it was really against the spirit of the contract. I also get the feeling that Drury didn't really go to Trouba and Kreider before he sent out the memo, and they found out after the fact. Trouba obviously had previous discussions about a trade that he declined, but I think Drury didn't ask or inform him this time around, and neither Kreider. I can see how that rubs the players the wrong way. There are many cut-throat organizations and general managers around the league. Drury took it to the extreme.

All that said, it is still truly unprecedented how this type of stuff could break the club in a way that it did. There is no excuse. If you have a shitty person as a coach, you can understand it more easily because you are working and interacting on a daily basis. That is not the case with the general manager. You can talk among yourselves about how shitty GM and person Drury is, and still do your job.

The 90 point player is gonna be gone before we're competitive again.

Also, this notion we're seeing recently that Chytil was somehow negative value is big time cope.

If you go back to 23-24, if you polled many people on this board, almost universally we would have agreed that Chytil's career was nearly done and his contract was going to be a problem moving forward (LTIR rules, etc). Move forward in to 24-25 and he starts the season well but in hindsight, was he that good? He played a grand total of 56 games, had another head injury which sidelined him again which isn't great based on his track record and scored a whopping 26 points.

I wouldn't see many teams lining up to add a player like that
