Speculation: Roster Building Thread: Part XX (WTF are we going to do this Off-Season edition)

There is no one in this organization sans Adam Fox that San Jose would or should trade the 1st overall for. It's not even a guarantee that they win the lottery.

A reasonable package starts with Lafreniere, Schneider, the 1st this year, and goes from there, but I don't think that's anywhere near enough.
This draft has no sure fire star. Theres no guarantee the 1OA will turn out better than Laf. I would not trade that package for this year’s first. Not even close.

I feel like a broken record saying motor motor motor so often but this teams players could probably be 20% better if they worked hard to have elite motors/stamina. Im not even talking 22 minute a game motors. I'm talking full blast 45 second shift motors.
I think this team has proven over the last few years they have a severe lack of compete. Just go back to the game 7 loss against the Devils in ‘23. 🤮

If that’s not enough GTFO, that’s a hell of a package.

Schaefer in his limited time this year looked the part. The skating is elite, unfortunately missing that much time in your draft year allows for too many questions still. Regardless he deserves to go #1.

Misa obviously crushed this year being moved from LW to C full time. Many believe he is a LW not a C at the next lvl.

Martone is the type of winger that all teams covet. Big heavy goal scoring PF.

Those 3 IMO are the only true projected 1st line/pair players in this draft. And they all have ?.

If I where Grier I’d be looking to move the pick for a haul also.

Breakup day tomorrow. I'd like to know the following in this order

1. Edstrom's injury and summer timeline (is he still rehabbing or good to go now?)
2. Kreider to speak to the media and show some leadership and accountability and also to talk about his injury.
3. Schneider to talk about his injury.
4. Fox to acknowledge his shortcomings and what he will do about them.
5. Either Peca or Muse to talk to the media.
6. K'Andre to be very candid about his year and where he is now.

High expectations

Wouldn't expect much of an update from a guy that probably won't be there
Kreider will probably take the high road and be vague about the future
Schneider will probably say he'll be fine for next year
Good luck with that
Hopefully
Good luck with that other than the usual platitudes

I know a lot of people are thinking about Sullivan, but the thing that bothered me most about him was when as assistant head coach, he did the second intermission interview and walked off with an "alright" rather than a "thanks" or "you're welcome".

My updated off-season plan

1) sign provorov 6 X $6.5
2) trade kandre and othmann for sam girard and jack drury
3) trade kreider for dallas 1st from SJS

Cuylle-JT-Mika
Panarin-Trocheck-Laff
Berard-Drury-Brodzinski
Edstrom-Carrick-Rempe

Provorov-Fox
Girard-Borgen
Soucy-Schneider
Jones

Igor
Quick

With a new coach, this isnt bad

Gavrikov also a good option for Fox's partner

In terms of UFA D, the most appealing options are Provorov, Gavrikov, Ekblad, Schmidt, Orlov. I would aim for Provorov or Gavrikov and stay away from Ekblad. If we can get a veteran 6th / 7th D that would be great just not sure what we can do with limited cap space.

I know it hasn’t been Rangers MO but would love to see them move Soucy to Montreal for Price’s contract or SJS for Couture’s contract. Yes we can’t accrue cap space during the season but we can make more moves in the offseason if we use the full complement of the cap space.

Coupled with Kreider’s likely departure that gives us quite a bit of space to make moves. Honestly if it’s the same old overpayment for toughness on July 1st then that means Drury hasn’t learned a damn thing about roster contraction and we won’t win with him as GM

EF discussed the Rangers on the new 32T pod. Huge pod. Every team which missed the playoffs and all of the playoff series.

Panarin situation is a bad look. EF is 100% correct. A player lured a female team employee to his room. The public knows what happened after the Strang story and we will see what happens next.

The Rangers need to have honest discussions with their players. Who really wants to be here? The Rangers can't have a repeat of this season.

Zibanejad's situation. He can say whatever he wants about the NMC. If the Rangers don't feel Mika can turn the page and move on, Mika can't stay here. EF didn't bring up Kreider's situation but if Mika will be sad about Kreider not being there, he can't stay here.

Bad season for the organization.

Coaching decision.

Roster. Bad year this season and they will bpunce back next season or was 23-24 a fluke season and 24-25 is a more accurate record for the team.

Kenny Holland may get another job as POHO. The league sentiment is Ryan Martin will join him as GM. I read Holland is working for the NHL after he left Edmonton last summer. I heard the Hawks may hire Holland to work with Kyle Davidson. Dreger mentioned that a Flames pod on YT. Does Holland fire Davidson and hire Martin in Chicago?

They brought up the caoaching instability. Even Dolan will tell you that's a lot of money to be paying coaches to sit at home. The assistant coaches have conttacts too. Dolan is not an owner who will tolerate these type of seasons. He will makes changes. EF didn't mention anything about Drury's job status.

Dolan's GM hired these coaches. Laviolette has another season remaining. $4.9M. Gallant made $3.5M to watch games on TV. It seems Drury will need to hire another AGM. Another coach and assistants. Another AGM.

Dolan needs to clean house and hire a new GM. The majority of these players need to go. The country club atmosphere needs to be ended,.

The perfect coach for the Rangers is Kris Knoblauch. Too bad Kris works for the Oilers. He was right there for the Rangers. After failing with Gallant, Drury went back to the recycled coaches. Now it seems the Rangers don't want a recycled coach who has coached five other teams. Drury has set this franchise back with his stupid moves. He needs to be replaced.

The Trouba signing, believe it or not, is the lynchpin that destroyed this team. Gorton signed him primarily for "offense" and "leadership"... he had a combined (not consecutive) 2 good seasons over his 5.5 years here, ended his time playing 3rd pair ES minutes, and as far as leadership goes, as captain he was given the ultimatum that "this was the last crack for this core" and the response from his teammates was to roll over and die... Perhaps he is one of the players with "feelings" about the Goodrow situation, proving to me that his "leadership" is simply a cop out for not understanding the business and analytics side of hockey.

Once you understand the above, you see the larger issue of this team -- as-constructed by Gorton, this group of loser players needed to be catered to because there was not enough of a noted case to warrant any thought to "trading high picked players", "hiring inexperienced coaches", or "cleaning house of players who don't want to be here" -- how do you do that when you went to a conference final the year before? Again, it all goes back to Jeff Gorton's beer goggles for Jacob Trouba, a player who he attempted to acquire "several times", a player who selfishly chose to play here not because he loved the city but because his f***ing wife needed to go to school here, a player who *did not fit this team* and provided nearly zero net-positives compared to the player that was traded him for him (Neal Pionk), at the cost of a top-5 paid dman at the time of signing, all to bring replacement-level play half way through that contract.

Something tells me that half of these players quit during Gallants first year.

You can put this blame on Drury if you want, but he inherited way more than half of this team, and I don't want to hear "he was AGM, he had say in these moves"... I'm sure he did, but he's not the one in charge of that team that Gorton built.

That said, you are correct, Drury has one more shot at a coach, he has MAYBE a 2 year leash with this coach that he eventually hires. If he does not come through, he's gone and the Rangers may as well just sell off and call it a day at that point.

We have a roster full of 6th/7th dmen.. we don't need anymore

We have a roster full of 6th/7th dmen.. we don't need anymore
Fox - 1D
KAM / Schneider / Borgen - #4D

Jones / Vaal / Soucy - #7D

Picking up a proper 2/3D hopefully slots the rest into the right roles. And then we should still look for another vet d. Maybe more of a #5 than a 6/7 to anchor the third pair

Staple's article just mentioned how the Rangers have one of the smallest front office staffs in the league. Makes no sense not to take advantage of all the resources that Dolan's money can buy. Feels like either nobody wants to work with Drury or he's freezing everyone out & isolating himself inside his ivory tower. Pretty soon it will be an ivory tomb. What an absolute dysfunctional shit show this team has become.
Edge was on this from day 1 of his hire.

This is very nice of you to put a list of questions together for Vince and Mollie
