Speculation: Roster Building Thread: Part XX (WTF are we going to do this Off-Season edition)

BREAKUP DAY!!!

You can put this blame on Drury if you want, but he inherited way more than half of this team, and I don't want to hear "he was AGM, he had say in these moves"... I'm sure he did, but he's not the one in charge of that team that Gorton built.
The team that Gorton built may not have been good enough to win a cup, but Drury has only made it worse. Not just on the ice, but the organization as a whole is in a much worse position. He deserves plenty of blame for that.

Before the Exit Interviews:

Dolan: "Okay, Chris. Ready to do this?"

After the Exit Interviews:

Dolan: "Geez, and I thought I was hated. Chris, did you ever punt a puppy?"

They won’t be able to admit what they have to do to make a Cup winner. They don’t have the patience, intelligence, and the fortitude for it.

They’ll lie to themselves as many do on here that just maybe if they add some more discount 30+ year olds that their core will be good enough that Igor can carry them to a Cup, because it’s easier than admitting that they need to suffer the consequences of their poor decision and that it might take them 5+ years in the wilderness before they have enough talent.

But they won’t do that, and the roster will be first round playoff exit caliber as it so often is on this team, without any real franchise, Cup winning forward talent. Real top-5 in the league caliber guys.

And we will go another generation without a Cup. Fox and Shesterkin and Panarin and company will be here and gone and they’ll have a couple of conference finals appearances to show for it.

I don’t see anything we can do in free agency to do anything with this franchise besides stop the immediate bleeding. We need another high end defenseman. We need Ryan McDonagh in his late prime to pair with our Victor Hedman (Fox) (or to be an elite anchor on a second pairing, creating two elite pairs).

Provorov? Gavrikov? Come on.

Re-arranging deck chairs on the Titanic. I’m not giving those guys big contracts.

This offseason should be about unloading the guys who don’t belong here. You can’t remake this group into a Cup winner, it’s not possible. The timeline on the aging vets is too short and not enough young talent was brought in and developed.

Thats why the pick should go this offseason, but it won’t.

But Kreider and Mika should be moved. JT Miller, no idea what to do with him. He never should have been acquired. So glad we can have a 32-35 year old for the next few seasons while we have no chance.

EF on 32T today - people will be wary of taking NYR job, given their history and the uncertainly of the roster/GM.

Says Sullivan won’t be available

You left out a ton of relevant info. Going to paraphrase here -

People will be "wary" of the roster uncertainty because coaches typically want to know who is in and who is out (both physically and from a buy in perspective) so that is going to have to get sorted. Anyone who takes this position is going to be comfortable with the lack of job security that comes along with it (Not an EF paraphrase here, but as much as people want to pretend that it's just an NYR thing, it isn't. A ton of teams have cycled through coaches over the last 5-6 years.)

OTOH, EF feels they won't really have trouble finding someone because at the end of the day, there are only 32 of these jobs all together and the Rangers tend to pay pretty well (and almost everyone has a price.)

He feels that Carle is a the top of their list but we'll see how it plays out.

For anyone who wants to listen for themselves: 32 Thoughts: The Podcast

NYR talk starts around the 1:15:30 mark.

FWIW, the lack of job security is why I feel like Carle won't come. He's spoken pretty openly about how he doesn't love that part of the NHL coaching world and he's in a great position right now. Maybe life changing money changes his mind, but he strikes me as the kind of guy who isn't going to be driven by money.

Drury could have done a lot of things differently to shape this team, which was still mostly middle aged when he took over, into a team that would at least be better situated as we stood here today.

He should have made more efforts to trade Kreider. He never should have signed the Mika extension. He should never have given Igor an unmoveable deal.

We would be sitting here with assets coming out of our ears and ready to pounce on an impact player.

I’m so glad we got to watch ourselves get bounced out of town by the Panthers. That was totally worth it.

Self scouting is important. This team was crap at 5v5. They should have known they never had a real chance. Future flexibility is always better than going all in when your chances suck.

And as I’ve said a million times, when you are legit, you don’t need to go all in at the deadline for the most part. Cup winners almost never rent heavily cause they are the team that has no holes or few holes.

Gavrikov is very good. He may only be very good for 2-3 more seasons but he fits the bill.

Provorov sucks.
