Speculation: Roster Building Thread: Part XX (WTF are we going to do this Off-Season edition)

Is this the Offseason of Offersheets?

There are few secrets in today’s NHL.
If we know something then 31 GM’s know it and so does the Player’s Agent.
If you’re Kyle Davidson and you are able to lock up Will Cuylle to play on Connor Bedard’s left for the next 7 seasons for 6M and all it costs is a first and third round pick you’d take that deal every day.
That’s just one team. There will be others who will be interested.
31 GM’s might also have interest in offering contracts to K’Andrea Miller, Adam Edstrom and Matt Rempe.

Mika Zibanejad has a full NMC
JT Miller has a full NMC
Panarin has a 15 team NTC
Chris Kreider has a 15 team NTC
On July 1st
Igor Shesterkin and Adam Fox will have a full NMC
There’s a saying in the NHL about the comradery amongst GM’s “throwing an anchor instead of a life preserver" when another team is in financial trouble.
Panarin has full NMC

Too bad that we have to wait over the weekend. I know some teams do it right after the season ends.

I guess we'll see if Laviolette is still there to address the media. Hopefully not.
It's Good Friday. Not a chance they make them come to the rink.

I’m here to tell you that Will Cuylle is not getting a 7 million contract from anyone lol
If you're Cuylle's agent, why would you accept a penny less than the Laf deal? They're the same age, Cuylle just scored more goals and the same amount of points in less ice time. Cuylle isn't on the line with Panarin. Cuylle third in the NHL in hits. Laf -13, Cuylle +12.

I know its a crazy long shot but if we do get a new coach I wish there was a way we could speak to Rod in Carolina.

Holding on to Mika makes the most sense. He plays RW or center, two positions the team is actually pretty shallow in for now. Most NHL teams prefer to start a season with 5 centers on the NHL roster at minimum so with Brodzinski and Zibanejad that would likely mean they’ll have 6 which is ideal. 7 if they qualify and keep Parsinnen.

Cuylle-Miller-Zibanejad
Lafreniere-Trochek-Othmann
Berard-______-Perrault
Rempe-Carrick-Edstrom
Kaliyev
Brodzinski
Parsinnen

It’s possible the team values a certain RW more than the centers that are available which could push Zibanejad down to 3C at 5v5.

I do think Drury makes a trade for a young, skilled forward

Since @Machinehead had mentioned potentially doing a 100th anniversary team thing this offseason, I'll throw my initial roster locks in here:

X - Ratelle - Gilbert
X - Messier - Bathgate
X - Boucher- Cook
X - X - X

Leetch - Fox
Park - Greschner
Howell - X

Lundqvist
X
WIthout giving it too much thought, here's my first draft. Forgive me if I'm forgetting someone obvious, I put this together quite quickly.

Bryan Hextall - Frank Boucher - Andy Bathgate
Artemi Panarin (🤮) - Mark Messier - Rod Gilbert
Bun Cook - Jean Ratelle - Bill Cook
Chris Kreider - Mika Zibanejad - Cecil Dillon
(HM: Graves, Jagr)

Leetch - Johnson
Park - Gadsby
Howell - Fox
(HM: Seibert, McDonagh)

Lundqvist
Giacomin
(HM: Richter, Gump, Igor)

Under goalies, I would HM Davey Kerr.

Challenge with keeping Mika is cap, of course, because finding a top 2 center will be nearly impossible.

Really the best we can hope for in that instance is to get an actual established 3C who can kill penalties, chip in 40+ points, and contribute. NYR can't afford Bennett. Gourde will be way overpriced. Giroux is just about done with his career unless he's fine playing 15 a game. Some poster who knows more about Duchene than I do said he'd be reticent to leave the south

And even then, Miller-Trocheck-3C-Carrick is just a little above league average, so you'd have to get better in other places.

cause of all his playoff success? This is a guy who coached against both Gallant and Laviolette in the playoffs....and lost.
I would want Rod because he is a heck of a good coach. Good coaches also lose. Some of the best coaches in history are also near the top in all time losses. How many coaches that have won the cup previously lost playoffs and or were fired from previous jobs?

Laf was arbitration eligible and coming off a contract that paid him 2.325 mil.

Cuylle does not have arbitration rights. He's coming off his ELC.

Laf was coming off a 28 goal, 57-point season, with another 14 points in 16 playoff games. Cuylle's number this year are comparable to Laf's, but not to what Laf did last year.

It's possible that Cuylle signs an offer sheet. It's also possible that Drury will clear cap space and offer Cuylle a long-term deal. In either case, he might get near what Laf got. But he isn't getting that much just because he scored the same number of points as Laf this year. That's not how contracts work.

Drury will probably be pinching pennies this summer as he tries to retool the team to get back into the playoffs. My guess is that Cuylle will only get a 2-year deal. The AAV on such a deal will be considerably lower than what Laf is getting.

No one is signing Will Cuylle to an offer sheet. Teams spit out 20 guys like him league wide every year. It's just the lack of honest hockey players on the top squad for years that has made him stand out so much.

He's just a (middle six) guy.

what makes him a good coach? Not trying to criticize, but because he has regular season wins and less losses? Because his team shoots from everywhere? Lindy Ruff has a lot of wins and losses....I dont consider him a good coach.

Or is it because he has a system that makes his players better and crank it up even more in the playoffs (cause thats what I want...._ )
