Player Discussion Linus Ullmark (G)

I am not really sure what y'all are looking for. Complaining he's making $8-mill next year and that he didn't get us past the Leafs is a bit of bunk from my perspective. Two goalies earning more than him never made the playoffs. This fanbase needs to be more realistic at times. I'd say, like the team, Ullmark made strides in the playoffs this year. He had his first playoff shutout and didn't play that bad in game 6. Saying we need this or we need that or expecting Meri to save the day are pretty unrealistic expectations honestly.

If saying we need top level goaltending in the playoffs to win a cup is unrealistic for ullmark, then he's not the guy...

That core is not good enough. Although they’re all good players. The unit overall is not good enough.

Missing a stud or two for sure.

I feel like when you compare it to:

Alfredsson
Hossa/heatley
Havlat
Spezza
Redden
Chara
Hasek

Etc.

Then guys like 30 goal, 70 point McEachern, 50-70 point bonk, 40-50 point Fisher, Chris Neil, etc.

You had a better core with guys destined for the ball of fame... And then your supporting cast was capable of 30 goals and 70 points in big year.

Were lacking that depth and top end talent. As good as Tkachuk and stutzle are...are they Hossa/Alfredsson hall of fame good? If they are, where's our Heatley,Spezza, havlat, to round out the offense? Where's our endless supply of 2way 50 point centers like white and Smolinski and fisher?

Is Sanderson going to rank as high as Chara all time? If so, where's his redden?

Then we're going to need ullmark to beat lalime or Anderson's playoff numbers. Go look at both of them. Can ullmark top them?

Then you realize the team I'm comparing them to never won a cup...so they actually have to SURPASS the team they're well behind when it comes to personnel.

I think we can make it work with Ullmark but we have to improve the D.

Take Adin Hill in Vegas; he's a good goalie but he's a product of the air tight D in front of him. The Vegas blueline is huge and well coached. They don't miss many assignments, they block a lot of shots and they get the puck out. That's what we need in front of Ullmark.

He needs to see the shots to have a chance. He wasn’t good enough but they can do a better job of clearing and not getting in his way.

What's unrealistic is expecting that Meri can come in and save the day. I believe we have a right to expect a lot from Ullmark, but we also have to provide the means for him to deliver. Giving up on him after one playoff series isn't realistic. Pulling him after one bad game isn't realistic. People suggesting he be pulled early in the series, meant he wouldn't have had a shut out. Experience only comes through being in the game.

Size and snarl. We have a couple good puck movers on LD. So if we can get another Kleven type guy for RD (and Kleven to take the next step), we'll be in good shape.

Can't understate the importance of a top quality head coach like Cassidy as well.

Green has done well implementing a strong defensive system and two-way focus at even strength, but he badly needs to fix the PK, as it was one of the worst in the league at preventing scoring chances.

I like him when he does his job but overall I don't 'love' the guy. Very abrasive personality imo.

This comming from a life-long Robin Lehner fan.

I see' fake crazy versus real crazy when I see it.

Oh I see, I misunderstood.

Bob got a massive (at the time) long term 10mill/yr deal and for a time it looked like a contract the Panthers were going to regret. Look at him now.

I wanted more from Ullmark this year, I still think we will get it.

Yak is still a couple years away.
Really? He only has to be better than Matinpalo who brings zero offence to the equation, he's okay defensively, but has shown to be soft & shies away from the rough stuff. Depending how he does in Belleville I wouldn't be surprised if by the new yr he replaces him at least to get some NHL experience with Jensen most likely leaving after next season.
