Roster Building Thread : Part XVIII ( TDL is March 7th)

I've heard this all before. It seems to me there are some here including you yourself who would start with all the larger contracts---get rid of Panarin for picks, prospects, cheaper young players, ditto for Sheshterkin, to Fox, to Zibanejad, to JT---you yourself (almost no one else would) would divert around Kreider where pretty much the rest of consensus would start.....and now you've dumped $45 to $50 mil and maybe taken $15 back. That seems to be the dream. You're way under the cap floor at this point with a team full of second and third liners---other teams have locked away their really significant prospects because that's what even semi-sensible GM's do and you find yourself with this all this cap space you have to spend even if only to get back to the floor and in the meanwhile at least this year there's not going to be a lot in free agency---which might be the start of the yearly trend---at least with the cap going up $8/9 a year that's what seems to me. What do you then when you got a mediocre to average team---a shit ton of cap space but nobody to spend it on but your second and third liners? Congratulations--At this point maybe you've recreated the Yakupov Oilers.
1. You make deals to improve, usually means profit, whether that be by addition or subtraction.

2. Every situation is different. That's obvious enuf I shouldn't have to elaborate.

3. In a hard cap reality it is nec to go w/youth [which also adds benefit of greater energy, capacity to play w/more intensity] over vets who have experience, but due to seniority are more expensive. Going this way means more pieces at less cost = more flexibility as to roster.

4. Accordingly, it is pref if we are dealing, say, a bread that we get a Bischel + in return.
Rinse and repeat as a strategy.

5. I disagree that getting guys like Bischel, Kleven, Byfield, etc etc = "at this point with a team full of second and third liners". Those are guys w/legit upside, which you overlooked.
As to "other teams have locked away their really significant prospects because that's what even semi-sensible GM's do" you will find some of this is yes and no depending on the prospect, what we are offering, and their need for a high end performer. I may not get Matty Berniers out of SEA but we might get Byfield. And we only need a handful, not a dozen.

6. You state concern this leads to falling below the cap floor. I am not unduly concerned, but for sake of argument, say that happens. We can weaponize the extra cap space and take on expiring deadwood -- for a fee, of course.

7. As I have said, I will demonstrate an open mind on Kreider WHEN it is appropriate to consider dealing him, which is ONLY AFTER he has some reasonable level or return to being healthy. Peeps gotta let it sink in, no one will bid, let alone pay big, for an asset unable to perform sufficiently, if not at peak level.
At that time, we should assess ACTUAL ck condition, plus who is left after we sell high on the more expensive vets

I would be all over Peterka this summer if Im Drury. the exact type of offensive talented we need in our top 6. We should offer sheet him if possible. He has the upside to be a Guentzel type scorer for us long term. Would be really solid on Panarin's wing for a year.

In a trade, Gabe is the guy to move for him. Hate to say it but you trade an undersized prospect for a sure thing in a similar age bracket.

We aren't getting a 1C or a 1LD by trading any of those players. Prospects/players with 1C potential are more likely already in the NHL, rather than being 1 year out.

Fox is one of three players in the history of the league to win the Norris Trophy as a NY Ranger. He's in his prime and signed long-term on a good value deal. We saw him spend a sizeable amount of time away from Ryan Lindgren, with an actual Top 4 Dman, and we saw that pair absolutely crush it. We saw the team look abysmal when he was out with an injury this season.

And yet you still have idiots wanting to dump him for pennies on the dollar, and whining about the "Fox Mafia" whenever someone calls them out on their bad ideas. Wild.

It's not possible because we don't have our 3rd round pick and might not have our 1st round pick either.

I feel like it's not idiots it's one person. Definitely the Fox Mafia comment. I'd be absolutely embarrassed in his shoes.

I just want some clutch players.

Maybe it's been skewed from this season but I feel we're about as anti-clutch as it gets. I wouldn't mind Peterka but I would much rather have Tkachuk

I believe it would be the 2026 picks that would be sent to Buffalo if the Rangers offersheeted Peterka in this scenario. The Rangers have their own third but not their 2nd or 4th which would make things complicated. Also they don’t really have enough cap space to offer sheet anybody so it’s barely worth bringing up.

stop w/disingenuous bs
RB and I are looking for not just fair return, but signif profit here, ie not just $1 value back for $1 value surrendered
we are still attempting to figure out exactly what that is, but that is besides the pt

pennies, etc is wrong AND YOU KNOW IT
STOP

I’m not touching the 26 pick. Especially if we’re moving Mika / ck/ panarin.
There’s an opportunity to actually get a really high end talent there.
I like peterka but not that much.

Certainly a valid point that I'm looking at the wrong year. Offersheets are bad anyway outside of mid tier players. It's giving up unprotected picks for the rights to overpay a player and you can't really give them more than 5 years since the compensation is divided by 5 even if the years are 6 or 7.

I agree, generally not worth the price of making an offer that the team with the player signing it won’t match. St. Louis pulled it off but the cap going up makes it less likely that you would be able to steal a player or two like they did going forward.

Yea STL did it with mid level guys in the 2-4M range. You basically can't do it with a 1st liner since you can effectively only do 5 years and unless you really really egregiously overpay it's going to get matched.

Oilers were just dumb. They even made the moves needed to match, and chose not to. But we don 't even have our 2026 2nd pick, and the Holloway situation I don't see happening. Every team should match that. Again, the Oilers were just dumb.. 1,511,701 - $2,290,457 would be the 3rd round pick range, and I can't see a lot of good players in that range not being matched.

One of them usually needs an abacus to keep track of the number of players. Trading a 27 year old 1D that the Rangers haven't had the likes of in twenty years makes no sense to me.
I was just pointing out that the way RB makes trade suggestions almost always result in the Rangers giving up the best asset in a trade and we all know what in general is said about which party is a trade winner...

I’d rather not trade our only prospect with top-6 potential who will be cheap for the next few years. I’m trading Laf before Perreault.

Rather not sell low on Lafreniere. The goal should be to put the 23 year old who was dominant in the playoffs last year in a position to actually succeed instead of being Panarin's caddy.

I like Perreault enough but he's small and plays with nothing but elite players in BC. I think the hype is going to lead to to disappointment once again when he becomes a good player but not a gamebreaker. Peterka is exactly the type we need. Young enough to be a core player right now and for the long term. A sniper who can get to the inside and actually finish.

Peterka is 23 years old 6' 189 pounds, Gabe is still 19 (will be 20 in a couple of months) and 5'11 178lbs. Gabe will be about the same size as Peterka in a couple of years if not next year. He's not undersized. So the size for me isn't a big deal. I also think GP has a higher ceiling than JJP. That being said...
To my mind, we want to ADD players like JJP TO a roster with GP, Laf, Cuylle, etc. I'd love him on this team but I'd rather not trade GP. Just my take on it.

That's fair but where are we in 4 years? There's also no guarantee Perreault can do what Peterka (or even Lafreniere fwiw) has shown by the age of 23. Im just not sure Perreault totally fits with the direction the team is looking to go stylistically.
