Speculation: Roster Building Thread : Part XVIII ( TDL is March 7th)

The NHL and NHLPA need to have a discussion about there being too many clauses. You don't see this amount of clauses in the other sports.
Other sports have things the NHL doesn't. Any reduction in clauses is going to come with other concessions on the part of the NHL. Younger UFA age, maybe.

If an injured Frederic at 50% nets a 2nd and 4th, what is Reilly Smith worth?

a 2nd and a 4th if I had to guess. Maybe the Rangers could get an intriguing young player if they added a mid level prospect like Chmelar or Sykora or Roobreck.

Probably just a 2nd or a 3rd and a decent prospect.

He has the TUFFNESS that teams covet this time of year. A healthy Frederic probably would have returned a 1.

If the Rangers can turn smith into a 2nd and a B prospect that would be a f***ing masterclass. Wouldn't expect it but the options aren't exactly overwhelming right now.

Not sure what Tommy Novak gets you. Looks like a rich man's Ryan Strome which is nice but they've already got Miller/Trocheck 1-2 and he's not much of a physical player, defensive guy, or faceoff guy.

"Good points. Look into Steven Stamkos, will ya?" --Dolan to Drury

I don't think the FO's matter as much bc your 1-2 are so good at them. Even Carrick is clocking in at 53.5%.

I think the rest of this is fair bc I'd like Trocheck to play less (his usage has been way too high since he's gotten here) and you're not going to accomplish that by adding someone who can't take some of the food off of his plate.

Novak can shoot and skate. Young and affordable too. Makes perfect sense to me why they'd be interested. I hope the rumors that they are interested in a center are accurate. They need it. Defensive weaknesses were mitigated just by trading Lindgren.

Not that its the be all and end all, but he has 23 hits in 200 games for SMASHVILLE which should only be possible if he actively flees contact. Rangers already have a Mika.

For reference, Panarin has like 50 hits in his last 200.

Rangers have plenty of guys who can hit people. we need more guys who can pick a corner and put defenseman on their heels off the rush. And I'm someone who cares about "Tuffness" as the nerds call it. Ryan McLeod would be the perfect fit in this regard.

Right, but I don't care about 'hits' per se, its just a proxy for being in the hard areas as a forward. Tough to imagine him being in those areas with that stat though I guess its possible.

Steal of a contract for a pretty good bottom 6 C

Missed this quote from Jones the other day. Vibes were upbeat after trading Lindgren (crying about getting traded) and Vesey (crying about playing time)? You don't say? Im sure trading sourpusses like Kakko and Trouba didnt hurt the vibes either.

Maybe there was some malcontent, maybe Miller has helped. Others have touched on those.

Overall, the remaining group has been a lot more mature and shown a lot more fight than we previously thought.

Zibanejad in particular seems really engaged. You know, if they just got to the point where they were f***in tired of it all, I couldn't blame them. We certainly were. The recent moves seem to have injected some hope.

After last year the roster had to know deep down they couldnt win if they stayed the same. Trouba's malfeasance forced Drury's hand, and to some extent I think he deferred to a veteran group. Obviously it backfired but everyone kinda new this transition had to happen at some point. Credit to drury for not waiting until the offseason. The team is in much better shape now than it was in December. Both long and short term.
