Speculation: Roster Building thread - Part XVII - (TDL is March 7th)

Well, yeah, he was skating. He's not skating. That's on him. That's why I'm saying keeping him away from Panarin wouldn't have magically made his development better, oozing confidence.

I think Panarin is big part of his breakout, but it's obvious he was moving his feet a lot more last season.

He missed a bunch of time as a Sabre. He’s continued to miss a bunch of time as a Knight. Right now he’s on pace to play almost a full season for the first time since his rookie year.

He can’t help you if he isn’t on the ice.

I’d offer McDavid what ever a max contract is and multiple planets though.

I’d offer McDavid partial ownership of the org and deferred payments. Bend the rules

There are many reasons. He may simply want to go to a different team or city. He may want to see what else is offered. I’m just saying it’s not a foregone conclusion.
 
McDavid might resign yeah. He may like Edmonton and want to bring it home for them. Nothing you can do about that. But if he does go UFA, you offer him max at max years and NMC and you hope you can sell the marketability of NY. I wouldn't worry about him slowing down. He's already 4 steps faster than anyone that's ever played. If he slows down he will just be slightly faster then everyone else. Haha

I guess it comes down to whether or not we believe Fox will return to being Norris-caliber. I think we can objectively say he hasn't been that since getting injured last year, and now he's injured again.

Personally, I'm in no hurry to move him. The earliest we could even entertain the idea is in the summer. I could be persuaded, but the other team would have to make an offer we can't refuse.

Pretty much where I'm at.

The game he plays and his innate talent are naturally going to lead to good analytics and good production. Even high end analytics and high end production. Despite that, his impact on that game isn't what it was 2-3 years ago.

In the d-zone, he's almost unnoticeable... which is a trait that a lot of solid defensive defensemen have. He's playing fine defensively, but it isn't turning the play up the ice the way he once did. By the way, part of that issue is system related. The forwards under Laviolette don't give him the close or medium support the way they did under Gallant. In the o-zone, he controls the puck and does good things to keep plays going, but you see truly creative/skillful things from him a lot less often than you used to. Those are the types of things that we aren't getting, but the change won't necessarily show up in his numbers.

Is it because his mobility has taken a hit because of the knee injuries? Very possible. Is it because teams have adjusted how they play against him, giving him less time and space to take things to that next level? That's been a pet theory of mine since the series against the Devils. I don't know the answer. IMO Fox needs to play a little more instinctually and a little less deliberately. He's got the talent to do it, and I think it would significantly improve his game.

But in the meantime, for all those reasons I have concerns that give me no problems entertaining trades for him, but like you said... it 100% has to be an offer we can't refuse.

Half the NHL will be offering that contract as well.

Quite possibly.

But it would also be tragic if only the 2nd player in NHL history to hit 2000 career points never won the cup because of an irrational disloyalty to a franchise that hasn't won a cup for 35 years and possibly will not for the next 10-15.

McD will get a max contract dollar wise because it's a stature thing. He doesn't strictly need the money or security - he's Connor McDavid. If he wants to play at 37 years old, there will be a spot for him somewhere, he doesn't need to secure that outcome at 29.

I feel like the Oilers are good enough to win a cup. They're not any worse situated to win than most teams and there are no guarantees. Imagine if this were around the time Tavares signed with the Leafs and theoretically they signed McDavid. He might put them over the top but we now know this Leafs core is not championship caliber.
 
If Edmonton disappoints the next two years I don’t see why McDavid wouldn’t test free agency.

Hell, if they got swept by Florida in the SCF last season you’re telling me he wouldn’t have bolted at the earliest opportunity?

Rempe is more effective than people give him credit for. I said this when he was in Hartford, his size and strength as well as his playing style actually translates well to the NHL from the AHL. He doesn't really need to change much. Same goes for a guy like Edstrom and I'd venture a guess that Chmelar will be similar as well. These guys aren't there to make 1v1 moves and make perimeter plays. The areas of the ice they fight for in the AHL are the same areas they're fighting for in the NHL and in some instances, it's easier because there are more skill d-men at the NHL level than the AHL
