Speculation: Roster Building thread - Part XVII - (TDL is March 7th)

  • Xenforo Cloud will be upgrading us to version 2.3.5 on March 3rd at 12 AM GMT. This version has increased stability and fixes several bugs. We expect downtime for the duration of the update. The admin team will continue to work on existing issues, templates and upgrade all necessary available addons to minimize impact of this new version. Click Here for Updates
Cuylle had a solid rookie year, then a very good first half of this year and is still paced for 21 goals and 43 points in his 2nd year after turning 23 less than a month ago

"always gonna be" is a wild statement with that as your metrics to go off of lol

Again, so sensitive about our own players. Cuylle was never, ever expected to be a genuine top six talent. You NEED good third liners who can play up. That’s an asset. He’s one of a few bright spots on the team. If he is our prized jewel “young top six” guy we are beyond screwed. Laffy is abdicating that throne rapidly, and there isn’t anyone to fill it. Cuylle being your only hope for a future top six player is bleak.

No fan base has ever shit on as many league superstars while pumping the value and potential of 35-40 point players to be stars. Cuylle will end the year with ~38 points in all likelihood. His game has cooled off tremendously so his final totals won’t match his current pro-rated total. I’m not shitting on him, nor saying he CAN’T play in the top six. I’m very honestly just being realistic about our roster. Cuylle is a great player to have on your team to play in your middle six. Thinking there’s more juice to squeeze from that orange will leave you thirsty.

can’t agree with you here. i see cuylle as a guy who has top-6 upside, but it might take him some time to put all the pieces together. i think he’ll hover around 20 goals and 45 points for the next two years and once he really figures it out I could see a couple 30-30 seasons. But I am projecting a bit. I just see more upside than a for sure third liner. Maybe he never puts it all together but the tools are there IMO. i think he’s shown he can be a plus player in many different areas

You didn’t get the memo. Every player on this team needs to be purged and we need to start over

Lafreniere is on pace for 46 points. He’ll be a top six player, but almost certainly never an impressive one. He will probably barely be worth the contract we rushed to give him. He’ll be a top sixer the way Andre Burakovsky was a top sixer for 4-5 years. There isn’t a single player on this team that indicates a positive future for us. Kreider, Trochek, Panarin, Zibanejad and Miller are over 31. Shesterkin is nearly 30 when his contract kicks in. Fox is 27. If Lafreniere and Cuylle are the best players in your entire organization under 25, it doesn’t bode really well for your future.

A good GM would have realized this squad went about as far as they could go, never got it done, and with multiple guys coming off really good seasons tried to sell in the offseason. Instead they ran it back, gave out atrocious contracts, and made shitty trades.

Igor got off to a sluggish start and Drury still gave him way more than the next guy. And that Laf contract, yuck, that dude was carried off the back of Panarin and Vinny having insane years, kid doesnt have it, but lets reward him off a hot start.

If he isn't fired we are well and truly f***ed, the guy is ass.

The Rangers getting dumpstered by the worst team in the East is the literal best thing that could happen, and should cement selling off and not self renting anyone. No delusions.

Everything is exactly the same as it was 2 weeks ago. They'll sell off the UFAs, lose a lot to end the year, and get what should be a really good draft pick to flip for a mid 20s D so they can reload next year after firing the coach.

If we're REALLY lucky they'll get a bigger name to ask out and do a retool trade.

Igor isn’t getting traded but yeah continue to suggest that guys lol

He's not and it's a f***ing tragedy. If Drury had the balls he thinks he has he would trade him for two reasons 1) the contract to begin with was a joke and 2) make a point about players fleecing the team and then playing at an unacceptable level.

If you work on the assumption that
a - Drury knows this core is done, and
b - there will be no 'tear it down to the studs' rebuild because NYR don't play that way
how would people feel if Panarin was traded for a modest haul (something around 1st, a good but not great prospect, a 3rd line cap dump (Smith type) and an extra pick) and Drury then used the Panarin $$ to go all in on Rantanen come July 1 (with the risk being he signs before then and you have no him or Panarin)?
You end up with something like
Laf-Miller-Rantanan
Cuylle-Trochek-trade piece
Othmann/tradepiece-Zib-Gabe

I'm not advocating for this BTW, it's not what I'd prefer; but I am curious if people think it's kind of thing that would appeal to Drury/Dolan as a way to revamp while still putting a 'competitive' product on the ice

Drury is the worst GM in the league by far

I love Cuylle. He has more to give. He has been sucked into the vacuum by the rest of the veteran players. I hope the Rangers lose every game 8-2. The veteran players and big money players on this team are a joke.

more unregulated doomtelling! it's addictive to consume tbh.

bro the rangers are not as bad as they've been this year. and they're not as good as they were last year.

they will find a level somewhere in the middle of those extremes, and the moves that Drury makes are extremely important for establishing a direction.

replacing kreider essentially remakes the top 6 (post JT trade)

replacing Lindgren essentially remakes the top pair.

Goaltending is voodoo and if Shesterkin were a security, now would be the time to begin heavy DCA. he'll get back to being the guy.

but by all means, in the meantime keep this prophet of sorrows thing going. it's fun to read.
