Speculation: Roster Building Thread : Part XVI (Playoffs or Retool?)

If Dallas offered:

Mavrik Bourque
Tristan Bertucci
DAL 1st '26
DAL 2nd '26
DAL 3rd '25

for

Panarin
Lindgren @ 50%

Would you sign up for that?
So the trade is essentially for cap space and futures? With where the Rangers are now in team development cycle I'd discount draft pick futures and think about what the Rangers could have in the near future for $11m (opportunity cost). One thing that is unknown is would he accept if he was offered 3 more years at this $8.5-$9m range.

Isn't LW Dallas's strongest position?

There aren't a lot of good trade options for Panarin that make sense for this retool. Maybe something good will pop up in the offseason from all the teams that miss on Rantanen/Marner, but it's hard to find a team that's competing that will offer what Drury wants- which I'd b surprised if it was guys 22 and younger.

Otherwise I'd be talking about Byfield+ for Panarin.

For me Dallas would have to give up something more serious for Panarin. He's an elite forward. I'd want someone like Harley + and maybe two +'s. But a young player anyway who could immediately no question go into a top line or defense pairing. It would need to be more than just raiding their prospect/draft pool. My guess is the Stars would balk at that or at least at the trade deadline they would. If you're going into the playoffs you don't mess with your defense except to improve it.

If we were having cap issues I could see maybe a reason to move Panarin with his term winding down in a couple years. But we don't have those issues and I don't see a great reason to move him unless we're getting something very very substantial back.

I'm all for moving on from Lindgren, Smith, Vesey though. Maybe Kreider. Would like to move Mika. Would listen to offers for others as well. I expect the Rangers will find a new home for Jones too.

which bucket you put Lindgren? Because he's far from the defensive stalwart he was expected to be that stemmed from him being undersized combined with an injury he suffered in 2022-2023 season. I'm pretty sure it was shoulder separation that completely robbed him of a physical strength required for board battles and clearing net front. (p.s. I could've lived him not being "offense-oriented").

Now you're comparing him in this current state to say Jones? In vacuum I'd lean toward Jones if these were the only two options available but I'd be just uncomfortable to have him on the top pair for 20+minutes to keep taking all the abuse that would be coming his way. In a game or two all his offense-orientation would be beaten out of him and he'd turn into exactly the same defensive stalwart as you define Lindgren.
Lindgren just sucks like 90% of "defensive defensemen."

Trading Panarin is addition by subtraction. He's a crutch that enables the org to put off more systemic changes because of his top 10 level ability to carry the team to victory in any given game.

We need a team/GM who's in "win-now" and accepting of the risk-reward profile of a Panarin rental.

Would you play either of them on the top pair?
No, but 1. it does not mean that they suck as you state, and 2. we are not discussing D that are in $1m - $4m quality range, are we?

Now give me these attributes that these defensemen have and just a bit more of zone exit and offense that you can buy for $5-$6 all in - then this would be the type of D I want Fox to partner with (and very different from either Jones or Lindgren)

I don't know, you went to Jones for some reason. Jones sucks too. We were talking about Miller.

Miller is the kind of player people worry about it that I don't think is really warranted if he's with a good partner.

Nope. I jumped in when the discussion turned to smallish, offense-oriented defensemen that were preferable over defensive stalwarts.

Not about Miller.

Trading KAM is a lot less of a concern with JTM in the fold as he was the best chip to get a young C with term.

He's still a bonehead and 30% of the player he could be, but that's good enough. D is hard to get.

Yea I was thinking Matheson goes

I also think it’s a no risk move for them as Dvorak won’t have much value without retention
Maybe, but they have a lot of young dmen already. Xhekaj, Guhle, Hutson and Struble are all 24 or young and in the NHL. Then they've got Reinbacher and Mailloux in their system.

I just don't see them having an interest in Jones, who is a pending, arbitration-eligible RFA and subject to waivers. Even if they end up trading Matheson, I don't think there's a spot for him. If anything, they'll be on the lookout for a vet dman to insulate the kids.

If those are my choices, I prefer Jones over Lindgren by some distance.
Yup that's what I said too but repeating myself Jones would soon turn into a version of Lindgren after being exposed to physical punishment of 20+min of ice time. So lose lose proposition (i.e. smallish offense oriented defensemen do not deserve a preference)

Rantanen, as I predicted, is struggling without the Avs' speed complementing his game. I hope Carolina signs him to a $13 AAV long-term extension. That contract will be heinous for many years. Glad we dodged that bullet.
I'm sure hell have his moments, but this is why scouting is such an important part of success in this league.

Teams like Florida, Tampa and I'll include Colorado generally trade and sign for players who fit well into the mold of system and surrounding roster. Not just the big names. We know what teams like to go for those...
