Speculation: Roster Building Thread : Part XVI (Playoffs or Retool?)

We need to clean house, Drury, coaching staff, development staff everyone. We have some decent players in the minors who don't seem to be improving all that much, it needs to be fixed before Perrault gets here. We can't have him forced into the nhl in a shut down role, all this needs fixing.

Newsflash. No team is going to ever retain that much money for that length of time (Zibanejad).

I love Matheson as a 1.5 year option to play with Fox. He can skate and shoot. He doesnt back down on the defensive side of things either. We dont have the first to trade them but shouldnt the Habs be looking to make hockey deals. Id try something around Kreider/Zibanejad and their familiarity with Gorton/MSL/Ramsey and another O6 franchise. Montreal has a couple veteran contracts Im sure they'd love to move as well in Gallagher/Anderson. Just speculation but it would be funny if Drury and Gorton bury the hatchet with a trade like that.

I also think about the Blues for Mika. Probably as summer idea but Blues are looking to move on from Brayden Schenn. Mika would have a chance to play with Buch again for a respected franchise. I think his game would mesh well with Buch and Kyrou. Schenn would be a savings on the cap for us and he's won before and plays the style we're moving towards with the JT addition. Schenn popped JT a few weeks ago in a fight.

Fast forward/rewind functions are not easy to use in GS/msg+

Rs will do what it takes to move zib UNLESS someone is willing to pay more.
That is not likely esp since relocation options are limited, and suitors know that

Unless signif assets we do not have are attached, we have to eat the max and prob get creative to have 3rd team retain further
for 2ish mil can get away w/4 6ths, or in lieu of that Smith

Rather Soucy among guys who are available.

A lot of those Western Conference teams are going to admit defeat over the 4 nations break. Maybe we can get a defenseman or 3C from them.

Do you really want to pay Zegras 5.75 mil to be our 3rd line center? We're already spending 22.6 mil on our top 3 centers, and one of them is playing RW.

If you're paying Zegras 5.75 mil, how are you replacing K'Andre?

If we can find a way to move Mika, it would make more sense, but you'd have to tell me who is replacing K'Andre on defense. And even still, I don't see the point in bringing in someone like Zegras just to play him on the 3rd line and 2nd PP unit. We've seen how that tends to work out. If you want a 3rd line center, then get someone who is a better fit for that role.

I like Zegras and would take him on my team, but I’ll pass. Mainly because he’ll be here for a game and then everyone will complain about him the same way they complain about Mika and Kreider

If you're asking if the NHL or the Rangers have a stat for shit plays that costs us a loss......I'm unaware of anything like that. That said he's often been the culprit when a decisive goal has been scored against us. Also though here is a guy who is well out in front of all his teammates in the +/- at a -24 after 55 games. That prorates over an 82 game season to something like a -36 by the way. Lots of people do not like that stat but when a top player making a lot of money has that kind of number it pretty much signifies that things aren't going to be going well for his team. Your top 6 player and the top 6 line he's on is bleeding goals left and right when its key player the center is a -24 after 55 games. That's too big a number to be made up for even on a killer power play. From my perspective that minus number does justice to what my eyes have been seeing.

He has been playing better the last month or so and that's nice but it might be too late for the team to make the playoffs. As far as I'm concerned this season has been a disaster and Mika is not the only one I'm disappointed with---Kreider, K'Andre Miller, Lafreniere and to lesser degree Sheshterkin, Panarin and Trocheck.

Few thoughts, Rangers should buy and sell at the TDL, kind of how they have been doing this season.

- Trade Lindgren, Vesey and Smith for picks ( think combined they could get a 2nd, 3rd and a 5th)
- Give Othmann a shot on the RW
- Find a longer term option to pair with Fox. Use assets obtained in the Lindgren/Smith trades.
- See what market is for Kreider
- Use 1-2 retention slots to facilitate rental deals for other teams and bank thr assets.

I honestly would like to see the Rangers miss the playoffs this year and forfeit the 2025 first to Vancouver then having that 2026 pick unprotected going to them.

Also K Miller for Zegras would be terrible for the Rangers.

NYR are in top 5 for how many HDCA are generated against them so far this season. (5 on 5). Igor Shesterkin has the most high danger shots - using the entire season.

(I wanted to include Quick, so I used 800 on-ice minutes, removing some smaller sample size numbers). Quick is 2nd in HDSV% (10.8 per 60mins). Shesterkin is 34th in HDSV%.(8.5 per 60mins) Obviously the shot volume is different here as Quick played far less games.

Using the last 15 games the poster highlighted (Jan9th - today), Rangers are tied for 13th in high danger shots given up. Shesterkin has played more than quick, but also has a lower HDSV% across those games, and is basically at the same percentage as his overall season HDSV%.

The defense is far from great but it's been better and the goaltending has been roughly the same. You can always make the argument that it's still not good enough for success, but I think the other poster can also make an argument that we're suffering from goaltending and no offense.

Retool Redux

Ship out: Lindgren, Krieder, Smith, Vesey, iffy on Jones may have to wait until offseason for LD depth for reminder of the season. Domingue could have value if there’s a G injury to a playoff team.

In: Bonafide 3C for Mika wing move or departure, picks, RD/C prospect, LD is tricky because I think they should sign a FA in the offseason like Gavrikov and roll with him, Key, and Vaak and not pay to get a 1st pair LD now.

For 3C I’m thinking players like Laughton, Frederic, Evans if we can resign the latter two.

Since I didn't close out of my web browser after getting stats on the last 15 games, I figured i'll just put this here.

Matheson is 1st in HDCA during those 15 games.
Lindgren is 45th. (I don't see where he is 1st over the entire season)
Borgen is 38th
Miller is 37th.
Fox 68th.
Schneider at 91.

Cale Maker is 2nd.
Werenski is 5th.
Harley is 16th
Weegar at 21.

Some of the names are surprising, but it should also be known that players like Makar and Harley also have generated at the top.

Clearing the puck is an art. Boston failed twice yesterday to clear the puck. Zadorov failed to clear the puck yesterday. Stone PPG. Carlo failed to clear the puck in the 3rd period which resulted in the Vegas disallowed goal when Stone kneed Swayman in the heads. The entire sequence came from Carlo failing to clear the puck. Eichel last Sunday against the Rangers. Just ice the puck. Don't try to make a play with the puck. All of the goals result from mistakes.

Winning last night was the worst outcome possible. Three points out of the last wildcard. Drury and Dolan still think the Rangers are a few moves away. Drury will be busy at the 4 Nations plotting to move the Rangers 2nd round picks in 2028 and 2029 for some rentals. The Rangers already traded away a first round pick in either 2025 or 2026 for Miller. I am so sick of watching Kreider, Zibanjead, Panarin, Trocheck and now Miller eating up all of the valuable minutes while the Rangers try to make the playoffs. Not improve their playoff seeding. Just making the playoffs in an average league. Some of these teams are awful. Drury isn't selling off any pieces.
