Speculation: Roster Building Thread : Part XVI (Playoffs or Retool?)

The best outcome for this team now, if you’d like to win a Cup, is for this team to make the playoffs and get embarrassed in the first round.

They have less than zero chance of winning it all with this bunch. But they’ve also been too good to fall to a good pick in the coming draft as we once hoped. But if they get too bad, they’ll end up picking like tenth this year and then worse next year and could give up an even higher pick to Pittsburgh.

The best scenario is that they coast through the end of this year, we give up the pick this year, and Drury is again taught the lesson that he needs to tear this group down.

“Best” scenario for you being the worst one for the organization is par for the course haha.

It’s fun to come in here an see the victory laps and sky is falling people. The team is in an on the fly transition. There are still moves to make. I have to acknowledge that the playoffs are going to be a scratch and claw situation so people may get their wish if they come up short, but The team has made huge strides forward in the roster construction standpoint.

Kreider, Lindgren, Jones, Smith should still go. Berard and Othmann need to get the call. Get a top 4 D for the assets we move and the team is golden.

8 of 10.

And yes mostly Lindgren’s fault.

I dont know how people can watch the games and not see that. Lindgren can't skate, shoot or pass to anyone but Fox. When the forecheck is going, Fox gets left on an island as an undersized guy. Lindgren is bust getting tossed aside or taking a penalty. Laviolette is an idiot for keeping them together but Drury is going to take the toys away sooner than later if I had to guess. Everything he's done to this point hints toward it.

If Luka can get traded, Fox can get traded. Time to rip off the band-aid. Don't tell I'm crazy. I am 50% crazy. You aren't concerned with the way Fox can't defend? It's not all on Lindgren. That was a nightmare yesterday afternoon. His offensive output has dried up. I don't care about assists. 22 primary. 15 secondary.

JT is here and he is a different animal than what the Rangers have. Put Cuylle's locker next to Miller.

Get rid of the remaining trash.

The rentals. It's a sellers market. EF said the rentals are going for first round picks and teams don't like this draft. Lindgren and Smith package deal. Acquire a first round pick and other draft pick assets. Miller can kill penalties. Slide him next to Trocheck. Move Schneider next to Fox.

Draft a defenseman in the first round

Time to reinvent the team.

100% Look at the SJ Dallas trade yesterday--1st and 3rd.

Living in a fantasy land would anyone do....

Zib, Fox
for
Cozens, Power, JJ Peterka

Buffalo is looking for experience to add.

Rangers get a new core.

I'm sure the Rangers would need to add--maybe Sykora, or someone else from Hartford.

Zib, and Fox stay within the NY area which I believe is the only location they would go.

Cozens and Power have been mentioned multiple times in rumors.

I know take another slip of my coffee, because it's fantasy land.

Drury’s been a net positive for the franchise.
You'll need to show your work on that one. Drury inherited most of the players that took us to 2 out of 3 ECFs, and, given the current state of the team, I have a hard time seeing how he has been a net positive.
insane suggestion: Caps are in 1st and have like 1 or 2 more years of Ovi, probably. Something around Panarin for Leonard?
There's no way they are moving Leonard.

Probably true, but this team isn’t making the playoffs. Too many teams to jump over and too many points behind them.

Not with this lineup and continually giving top minutes to Kreider, Zibs Lindgren.
There’s nothing they can do. They don’t have much draft capital to make more additions, they can’t trade Zibanejad and Kreider probably has minimal value right now. Lindgren they can dump but are they gonna do that to get Jones or Brannstrom in the lineup? Doubtful.

Drury also inherited problems.... You don't see moving Trouba and his contract a problem? Goodrow?

You can argue that he created the Goodrow problem, but it did give the team grit, enough so that when he was productive, he was part of those ECF runs.

He didn't have a part in KK's and Laffy's initial introduction into the NHL...

The Buch trade was bad no doubt. I wasn't a fan of the Igor signing, but there is a mandate in place by the owner to win $$$ NOW.

He brought in J.T. Miller to encourage a culture change, and you saw an impact in 1game!

Hopefully he does more in cleaning out what's rotten.

Housley's fault. Lindgren's fault. Laviolette's fault. Drury's fault. Anyone else? Let's add Peca and Muse. Dolan's fault.

Fox never gets any flak.
Because Fox has proven himself to the best player on the team or at worst the 3rd best , 5 years running.

The rest have proven themselves to be shit.

Let’s try and and address that first, and see what happens.

What "Lesson" do you think Drury needs to be taught? He's already traded Trouba, *Goodrow, Kakko, Chytil this year. Obviously he wants to make changes. Did you think he was going to be able to realistically trade like 10 guys in one season? Obviously not.

He did inherit some problems, but no team is perfect.

We can argue individual moves and whether they are good or bad, but the results are the results. He took a team that was young and on the verge of competing, and turned them into an old, mediocre team in the span of 4 years. I don't put all the blame on him, but he hasn't made the team better.

My larger concern is regarding what he will do next. My fear is that he is going to continue to load up on expensive vets in an effort to compete, and it will go in the other direction. We'll crash and burn and will end up in an even bigger hole than we are in now.

NO
1) past service <<<<< value going forward, which is most in trade
nec to recover squandered assets

2) MUST deal Fox NOW b4 nmc kicks in

I wouldn't be so sure. Kreider, Lindgren, Smith, Vesey and Jones are all VERY likely to be gone by TDL. It ain't 10. But it is 9. Haha

The Rangers were 5 points out the last WC even in games played with Ottawa before the Christmas break.

Five weeks later, the Rangers are 6 points out of the last WC even in games played with TB.

All of these people say the Rangers have climbed back into the playoff race. Really?

Trade off some pieces. Buy some pieces. Trades in the summer.

The 5-14 stretch is hard to overcome. Stop being stubborn and try to change the present and future.

well, your fears maybe realized soon enough. he didnt resign a goalie for record breaking money, to rebuild.

this team needs to be reenvisioned, using various methods. bringing in the right kind of players.. getting rid of the wrong kind of players.. can go a long way towards achieving this.

Drury’s been a net positive for the franchise.

Huh? How so? We just traded a #2 over all pick for pennies on the dollar, and were currently ruining our #1 pick. Nobody has gotten better under Drury, so much so that we're still relying on the corpses of Kreider and Zibanejad for offense when they been offensive in the wrong sense of the word. The NMC's that continue to hamper this franchise are tossed around like candy by him.

This team needs an upgrade from Kreider, Zib, Smith, and Lindgren. He just got Smith and it sounds like he has no intention of moving any of the others

He could try to load up on vets, but with what cap space? Unless you get a team to take Kreider or Zibanejad off your hands for free, the Rangers are looking at having minimal cap space while still needing to sign or trade for a top pairing LD. Is the plan to trade Kreider, and then go with 3 rookies on the wings next season in Berard, Perreault, and Othmann? I honestly don’t see Mika being traded, his contract is too onerous and his play has been that poor. Even if you could move him, there’s going to be a hefty cap hit coming back in return.

JT Miller wasn't a win now move. It was a move to reinforce the Lafreniere/Fox aged core with veteran skill and leadership as we move out the spare parts.

Unless they start making a run soon, you have to think Lindgren and Smith go as rentals. I also think Kreider is either getting traded or LTIR'd at some point so Othmann can play. I actually thought Mika played with renewed life with JT on the RW. If nothing else Mika and Kreider will be dealt with in the summer. It's been telegraphed for months.

Post deadline id like to see:

Panarin-Miller-Othmann
Lafreniere-Trocheck-Cuylle
Kaliyev-Zibanejad-Berard
Edstrom-Carrick-Rempe

New top 4 D-Fox
Miller-Borgen
Vaakanainen-Schneider
Brannstrom

Igor/Quick

Younger and much more suited to play the fast & physical game. I think that lineup could very easily go on a run if they get hot. But if they dont, and the Rangers miss the playoffs, its not going to be the worst outcome. We get into the lottery and we also replenished picks we were missing in the Kakko and Trouba trades (and Lindgren, Smith and Smith soon). Textbook transition year that top teams go through.
