Ovechkin Milestone Thread - Countdown to 894 (Continued)

Kind of a weird stat though…Howe is the only player to score 30 or more in age 39 season, until this year when Ovechkin (barring something strange), will join him…but Selanne and Bucyk did it when they were older. Selanne paced for way more than 30 in his age 39 season, but didn’t play enough games…that tends to be the problem with older guys though as well, not just decline in athletic ability, but also a decline is ability to stay healthy
Yeah a bit of variance at the high end with Howe, Selanne and Bucyk in terms of their age 40 compared to their age 39, but predictably the depth of scorers falls off super quick between 39 and 40.

If Ovi sets the record this season he's gonna score 60 next year with the monkey off his back.

It looks like he'll either barely break it or barely miss out on doing so by the end of the season.

I'm sure he and the Capitals organization badly want the record broken and the chase to be over before the playoffs. The Caps have a chance to make noise in the playoffs this year and should be good again next year, and I'm sure the other players and the coaches and people in management don't want to be distracted by talk of the goal record chase during the playoffs and throughout the summer.

If he's about three goals away in the last week, then they may actually prioritize helping him break the record over anything else until he's done it. It looks like they may comfortably win their division and finish first in the EC.

I don't think this is true. Why should Ovechkin exhaust himself for the sake of this record now. Best to save himself for the playoffs and get the record next fall.

No reason why anyone would obsess over the record in the playoffs. You're not making any sense.

He doesn't need to exhaust himself to break it. If he keeps scoring at about his current rate this season, it'll be a close call.

I can't read his or anyone else's mind, but if you were within striking distance, wouldn't you rather set a new record this season and then move on with your career and onto new goals/things to focus on?

Because it's literally the only reason he's still playing?

@BallardEra /s

Really? I would assume the cup is his #1 priority. The record is his unless he gets hurt.

The caps are very good this season. So see above.

What I try to do is teach the kids the Canadian way. What we have to watch is we don't start acting like those goofy soccer guys. Now watch Ovechkin... scoring an empty net goal with 1 second left to make a 5-3 game a 6-3 game. Act like Joe Thornton, act like Sakic, act like Iginla, Shanahan, Bobby Orr, Yzerman, guys like that, now you know, I'm gonna tell you about this guy, he's got a free ride, he scores empty net goals, does this stuff, I am predicting someone's gonna get him and someone's gonna get him good, there's somebody out there, some big defenseman is gonna be sitting in the weeds, as he cuts across center ice, somebody's gonna cut him in half. You don't act like this, this is goofy stuff, and the same guys that thought this was entertainment last year thought Averey was entertainment, it's the same church, different pew, the same junk, and don't you Canadian kids act like it, act like Jason Strudwick .

I read this in Don Cherry's voice and just assumed it was tongue in cheek. Hope I was right.
