Last years UFA season was bonkers. Stamkos got 4 years @ $8m as a 34 years old. Chandler Stephenson got 7 years @ $6.25m. Marshessault got 5 years @ $5.5m at 33 years old.

Looking towards this next crop of UFA's and with the potential of a $9m cap increase, what do we project a guy like Tavares or Duchene getting? What about Jamie Benn? Ehlers? Bennett? Nelson?

Some of these tier 2 or early to mid-30's guys are going to be looking at longer term, $6+ million per year deals and none of them are going to bring the same level of production as Miller. All have various warts.

I’d like to have Ehlers. Probably cost between 8.25 and 8.5 per. That’s a lot for a speedy RW with a good shot, but can be somewhat shutdown in the playoffs and his slight body is susceptible to injury.

Why would this team be worried about cap retention on Miller when whatever the retention is will be made up in salary cap increases the next 2-3 years?

They've got ~19M in cap space without any increases. If the cap is 97M you're looking at ~28M in space. K'Andre Miller is the only guy that is set to make a ton of money. Maybe Borgen if re-signed he comes in around 4M per season.

I would not send over additional assets to lower the cost of JT Miller's deal. There is no need to. Take on the entire deal at a reduced asset cost.

For a lot of teams the term on the deal is a negative factor, not a positive one.

Honestly, if the deal is basically Chytil-Chmelar/Sykora level prospect - top 10 protected first round pick, I make that trade every single time. Chytil's health makes him too much of a question mark to rely on, if he can be the center piece on a deal like this (no Laf, Braden, Gabe, Othmann) then I bite the bullet. Love you Fil but this trade unquestionably makes the Rangers better this year and at least next year too, if not for longer.

Status quo. Teams are low balling Vancouver. Dundon is a cheapy. The Devils don't have the space. The contract is an issue. The age is an issue. Character issues. Tough sell.

The Rangers offer is the same offer Vancouver accepted for Horvat. We don't know the Rangers pick protection. Roster player, prospect and a first round pick. Top 12 protection for Horvat.

I would take that deal for Kreider.

He eats into whatever money they saved moving Trouba. And perhaps they’re not just assuming they’ll be able to move Zibanejad as easily as some believe. Or they’re interested in resigning Panarin.

Plus you gotta pay Schneider, Cuylle and K’Andre over the next 18 months.

In theory I can see why they’d want retention.

On the flip side of the coin, my gut tells me this is Drury putting the screws to Vancouver who’s in a bad spot. Which could easily blow up in his face

DO NOT take this as some serious report by a legit insider, it's Vancouver yellow page media. But maybe...

A source suggested to Postmedia that Carolina’s interest remains pretty minimal — like every GM out there, they would be interested in a deal if they can win the trade. And that’s not just about Miller, it’s about what else would be included in a potential deal. If, for instance, Hurricanes were to move Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Jack Roslovic, they would likely need another forward going back to them, just to make their roster work.

So, really, all eyes should remain focused on the Rangers. That deal seems to be the closest to becoming a reality. It would seem that the holdup remains how the deal would be structured. To move Miller, the Canucks are going to have to attach some sort of sweetener, whether that’s salary retention (which you suspect the Canucks are wont to do) or adding a prospect, of which the Canucks don’t have many and the few good ones they have they don’t want to deal.
