Speculation: Roster Building Thread : Part XVI (Playoffs or Retool?)

I agree with everything you said except I would give them our pick with no conditions. They’re taking our part time 4 mil center and Lindgren. God bless them.
We're iffy to make the playoffs. Even with miller. If we somehow luck out into a top 3 pick and get miller, I'm not missing the opportunity to fill a massive hole.
There are 3 players I'd love to grab. I'm also higher on Misa than most.

Perreault and Fortescue are looking good.
Emory needs more time to develop but is looking very good.

And considering we do have talent in on our NHL team we don't need an entire roster of blue chips. We need to fill holes. Some of them are big. Center and LD. But we aren't that far away from filling them. One lucky draft, or a good trade/free agency.
This is the same flawed logic that collapsed the last window. Slats setting picks on fire didn’t matter because “McDonagh’s only 27” “Stepan’s only 26” “Kreider’s only 25“ and the farm has studs like Buchnevich and Skjei waiting to make the jump.

The depleted farm’ll have the team rebuilding way sooner than it’ll have them competing for anything meaningful IMO.

Also it’s very clear that there was prospects included in whatever deal with Vancouver. Why else were those guys sitting if not?

So saying it was just Chytil, Lindgren and a 1st is likely wrong
All the "prospects" that sat have the collective potential of nothing, no one, and not even close.

I don't want JT Miller back, I think it's the wrong direction.

That said, none of our current "prospects", outside of Gabe and Emery, are interesting or a corner stone of any successful future.

This is Kakko's rookie year.

View attachment 963888

It would have been borderline abuse to keep feeding this player minutes. It's not ice time.

You guys gotta get off that idea. It's a stinker.
If Kaako was a CHL prospect and left in Junior for an extra year to work on skating and strength would anyone have batted an eye?

Management refused to make the hard choices. However, player and organization owns a percentage of blame on the outcome.

Again, Miller can't even fix the room on the team he's already a member of. Yet he's gonna storm in here and change the culture of this group?

The guy has caused a giant rift amongst his teammates. He's rumored to have feuded with numerous players during his tenure there. His name was in rumors before he signed his extension. The team is actively trying to get rid of a player who put up 100pts for them last season.

This guy is wearing a giant red flag and Rangers fans think it's a f***ing cape and he's Superman.

What hurts more than adding is all the opportunity loss not selling off Smith, Borgen, Kreider, etc. Imagine Tampa Bay sending a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd for Sam Carrick.

Know what? In all honesty. Im gonna say it.

This team needs to sell.

I understand its gonna take time to shed the scabs that wont shake loose with their NMC BS and "Im comfortable, screw you." attitude.

But, Drury sold the farm a few years in a row. Its not depleted, but its not healthy either. He sold the future to back up the core, to take a shot, and they folded. They folded. The body language and post game coments durring the ECF last season, when they were so badly outclassed by FLA, instead of doubling down and busting ass in practice...they needed a "beach day", only to fold half way into the first period before FLA played Varsity hockey, on the Rangers JV showing, to boot them out.

Then they show up in Sept, go on a heater, and as soon as they trip and coaching plays hardball, they mutiny. Really?

Nah. Nope. Hell F! NO!

This years first is gonna be top 10. No, we dont trade it.

The cupboard. Needs to be stocked.

This team has no problem filling holes via FA. None.

Jetison anything that brings back value morso than it provides.

Identify players that can be a foundation for the next 5y.

But for the love of God.

This core has not earned one more future based asset sacrificed, for yet another shoulder shrug, eyes to the pavement, "ho hum" exit.

That includes any significant "has to hurt to get" players for a JTM Bandaid. Regardless if i've advocated for JTM before. He isn't a savior.

I learned when the Giants passed on Micah Parsons for "character concerns" that talent trumps character. We have character concerns of our own in the locker room but they're about players being too sensitive. Give me the asshole.

I guess we will find out but dont tell me that bringing in JT does not scream of going all in with this core.
Maybe it’s a definition of “all in” but the negative aspect that comes with it is missing. Going all in was what the Rangers did in 1994. Some equivalent of such direction in this iteration would involve including Lafreniere, Cuylle, Schneider, Miller, Pierreault in this deal.

Now move the clock back to right after season-end if someone said that the Rangers would be able to get JTM for always injured Chytil (love the player but health risk cannot be understated) and simultaneously jettisoning Lindgren, and moving Trouba and his whole cap hit for a reliable 3rd pair D while still having a chance to further improve LD before deadline? Seemed too good to be true, no?

Depends on whether or not they actually run with him+the big 3 after this season.

I think if this happens, Zibanejad is a goner by the beginning of 2025-26.
I dont think so but I guess we will find out.
I don't care what it's worth anymore, the country club Rangers era ends the minute J.T. is back in red, white, blue.
Get it done Drury.
The funny thing about the JT stans is that they believe he is some kind of leader that will reshape the locker room. How did that work out for him in Vancouver? If he is such a leader how come he is the odd man out AGAIN for the 3rd time in his career.

JT reminds me a lot of Jimmy Bulter and the Heat’s current situation tbh

after he blew up the relationship with his previous 3 teams, Miami though they could fix him. And yet here he is again, being a shit teammate and blowing up the situation

At some point you have to come the realization that if it quacks like a duck, it might be a duck

I dont consider bringing miller in "loading up at the deadline"
I consider it making a move to replace Mika "long term" with a guy who's deal is shorter, and is still actually producing.

I consider it an opportunity to push Mika out in the off season without a drop off in play.

I'm not a fan of getting Miller and burning a prospect or an early first. But for the reported offer? I run with that.
and if having Miller/Mika/Trocheck as 1/2/3 gets us a deep run? I'd consider that a positive, and then move CK and Panarin in the off season anyways and fix our defense.
JT won't replace Mika if Mika doesn't waive and so far we have no indication that Mika is willing to do so....(BTW: JT's contract is only a year shorter.) As for a deep run -- I'm not a proponent of having another failed run with those guys just because you can.

I find our system pretty mid given the lack of blue chip prospects and the club’s record of not developing them into stars anyway. The only guy that excites me is Perrault and there’s still a 75% chance they turn him into a tepid grinder.
This is how I feel & I think is a responsible & honest take.

I don't care what it's worth anymore, the country club Rangers era ends the minute J.T. is back in red, white, blue.
Get it done Drury.
Is there anything you can factually post to back this up?

Honest question.

YES
and that is worth more than gold currently in the modern paradigm of the NHL, headed into the half-way mark of the 2020's. Have you not noticed how much of a stock there is again on wild hotheaded players? The Tkachuk situation in Calgary basically confirmed anyone who is similar to the Tkachuks in mentality will fetch high market prices when made available regardless of the situation.

Rangers have been trying to get someone like that for years.

Drury wants to get it done now because it will prove formidable for the future of the franchise when you have young prospects of tomorrow being able to learn and adapt with players like Vinny Trocheck & J.T. Miller. This team has accumulated a luxury of stock in the form of prospects in the past 7 years. People can complain all they want about the Rangers development but all of these young players want to be poached from other teams and they have a real amount of value. I know people here on HF like holding onto chips but it seems as good a time as any to get something productive done with a player that isn't just a rental.

Drury wants to create an All-American Nightmare for the rest of the league. He wants to make this team more aggressive & adaptable for the rest of the 20's.

There is so much incorrect information in this post I’m not even sure where to start lmao

I think that has everything to do with the fact that their younger star has indicated that he doesn't want to go anywhere.

Not for nothing, but not everyone is on Pettersson's side in that locker room. It's divided enough that the FO even seriously considered moving him which sounds crazy as he was just extended and when he's right, he's probably a top 5-8 player in the league.

I think the shit we're hearing from other players who shared that room with BOTH of them (and these are the best sources because they were actually there) indicate that the messaging could probably be better from JTM, but Pettersson really needed to nut up and get over it.

I don't think having someone of that mindset is really a bad thing, especially since we almost had a team wide melt down because they got rid of a 4th liner and tried to trade an underperforming player. It was bad enough when we had an asshole like Kravtsov come into the league with a sense of entitlement but at the end of the day he was just a kid who I don't think really likes playing hockey and plays simply because he's good at it and thought he was way better than he actually was (seriously though, f*** that guy.)

It's unacceptable when you have a veteran laden room lose their shit because some of their friends were shipped off, especially when the guys wear letters and have been here for the better part of a decade (or longer in CK's case.) No one is saying they should be thrilled - I doubt that the Tampa core was jumping for joy when the TB FO told Stamkos to buzz off but they got over it and look all the better for it.

TLDR; I wouldn't assume that Miller is the problem in the current scenario. Pettersson sounds a lot like some of the problems have have permeated the NYR locker room.

Now whether or not it's a smart idea to hitch your wheel to someone with that many miles on them is another conversation entirely. I think that one is valid.

Petersson reminds me of Laine a bit. He’s just a more talented overall player.

I truly rather use a 1st to get a player like Walman or anyone to play on the top pair.

I truly think this gets solved this offseason. Gavrikov is the guy. The key will be what depth Drury can manufacture behind Fox and his partner. Schneider will be around. What about Vaak and Borgen? Miller? Would anyone be upset with:

Gavrikov-Fox
Miller-Borgen
Vaak-Schneider

Be that as it may, Drury is in charge and we are just along for the ride.
Be THAT as it may, we DON'T have to be silent sheep and just shut up and take it.
I'll berate zib b'c he's earned my ire, and won't stop til kingdom come or he's gone from this team, whatev's first

Drury will hear this board
and if he ignores it, when we get it right, as I do more often than not, I will throw it in his face

moving Trouba was terrif
underselling KK = a no
