I don’t understand the rhetoric here. Some speak as if we only have 30+ year olds on this roster and that is just not the case. Plus how many 30+ year olds have we added over the last 5 years? Kane? Wheeler? Tarasenko? The majority of who are 30+ we acquired or had prior to age 30. Kreider, Zibanejad, Panarin. They are in their “window” and have been for the last handful of years. Is someone really expecting they were going to trade Zibanejad and/or Panarin to “cash in” at the exact right time like this is the stock market? That isn’t reality. Sure you could say Kreider this year, but cmon he isnt on the level of Rantanen or Necas to pull off a deal like the one last night.

You aren’t going to have a team of all players under 30. And its not like we are devoid of younger players. Lafreniere, Miller, Schneider, Cuylle, Edstrom, Igor. Add Kaliyev and Rempe to that or whomever would sub in for Rempe such as Berard. They just arent some old bunch.

I am not saying i want JTM. I am very on the fence on this one. I just don’t subscribe to this narrative that the team is super old and everything is handled wrong.

That’s bc we aren’t super old. We’re bottom 1/3rd for average age and would still be bottom half of the league swapping Chytil for JTM. A lot of the teams with us in the bottom 1/3rd are young/bad tanking teams.

Rantanen is going to be 29 to start next season (pretty much, birthday in October). His next deal, especially if he stays with the Hurricanes, is going to be 8 years. That deal will take him to 36. Miller is 31 and has 5 years left on his deal after this one in which he turns 32. That deal will take him to 37. There’s an argument to be made that Miller at $8m for 5 more years may be a more prudent acquisition as compared to Rantanen for 8 more years at $14m.

It all comes down to the cost to acquire.

Do you? I don’t think the reaction would be positive if the Rangers trade 2 young centers under team control for 2 UFA wingers. Just going off past experience
I'm reasonably certain he was looking at those deals in the opposite direction, suggesting we should trade a guy like Panarin for younger NHL players.
It’s a 32 year old with time on the contract at $8MM. I don’t see how it’s even a conversation.
Mika is a 32-year-old with time on the contract at 8.5 mil. Would you want to trade for him if he was on another team?

There's no guarantee that Miller will continue to play well. His numbers are already down this year, a la Mika last year. Maybe that can be attributed to the locker room tensions, but there's no guarantee that he will play as well on the Rangers as he has with Vancouver. Different coaches, different systems, different players.

Miller is 31
And turns 32 in less than 2 months. He's actually a month older than Mika.

Crosby available?

What do I personally have to do to send Mika and Kreider to Pitt for Crosby and Petterson?

They still owe us for the Kovalev/Zubov gift.

Im struggling to see why Chicago did this. They traded Hall and took on 1/2 of Rants salary, only to get a 3rd?
Makes no sense. They had Carolina by the family jewels. Imagine a Rantanen trade is signed sealed and done and the only thing holding it back is a draft pick? Chicago couldnt strong arm Carolina into a 2nd on that? So bizarre.

He’s talking about it from the Colorado perspective of trading a UFA winger that they weren’t going to pay in Rantanen for a younger piece like Necas that can be a part of their core. These types of moves are how you keep windows open and flexible cap sheets

"Trade official: Colorado trades Mikko Rantanen to Chicago in return for UDC Nils JuntorpChicago trades Mikko Rantanen (50% retained) and Taylor Hall to Carolina in return for Chicago’s own 2025 3rd round draft pickCarolina trades Martin Necas, Jack Drury, Carolina’s own 2025 2nd round draft pick, and Carolina’s own 2026 4th round draft pick for UDC Nils Juntorp"

Nils Juntorp is one of the hottest commodities in the NHL right now
i'm not surprised. he's been heavily underrated for a long time

So Miller for Chytil , Jones , Sykora , protected 1st

Who snaps ? 🤣

I could also see NYR taking Desharnais back to pay less

that would be interesting. If Crosby goes, I assume Malkin probably wants out and then the Pens will go into rebuild/get a franchise forward at #1 mode; but I also assume they'll be stuck with Letang and Karlsson as no-one is taking those contracts
There will be a dogfight for last place and the #1 OA draft pick in 2026....Pens will be leading the charge as we all know as Ranger fans .....and Isles as well . Not sure outside of Chicago from the West who brings up the rear .

The funniest part is that the pick was originally Chicago's.

Chicago traded their 2025 3rd for Carolina's 2024 3rd so they could select Jack Pridham. The pick is almost a 2nd rounder, considering where Chicago is in the standings, so it's not that bad. Carolina's 2nd could theoretically end up only being 1 spot higher.

Still, that's not great value for what they gave up. At the least, they could have gotten Carolina's 3rd as well.

welcome to hfb!

So thankful we didn't lose my boy Rempe in any trade for Mikko.
that's our boy!

NO stop overpaying
Smith Lindgren Kaliev + Sykora
for
jtm + useless cap dump Desharnais

other side deals possible but THAT is THE deal they should make
if VAN wants to look like they are not folding/rolling over, add Korzack + BMB fore free

I highly doubt there will be an out clause on Rantanen new deal versus there being one on Miller's current deal . I think that should be worth noting as well .
