Speculation: Roster Building Thread : Part XVI (Playoffs or Retool?)

I’m telling you from front office perspective. It was surely the plan this offseason. The teams struggles were locker room related for probably at least 75% of it. Can it be fixed? Can on ice performance rebound? It’s not unreasonable. Management plans take adjustments along the way but the plans are laid out well beyond 2 months window we just watched. Even if you’d put this level of performance for the whole time since after their hot start and they are probably in the midst of it with Caps, Canes etc. And there’s still plenty of room to potentially improve “internally” before considering the impact of external additions.

I thought this in December. The team is busting its ass right now and is still struggling to score and win games. Everyone just fell off offensively.

But there still is no path to improve the team's two glaring pre-malaise deficiencies... puck moving from the defense, and speed at forward.

Even if you assume Mika, Kreider, Miller and Laf return to form and starts playing like they did last year (Odds on this?), this team still isn't close to a cup favorite.

Agreed.

It’s hard to see the team making a ton of noise w a defense like this…though there is potentially a world where it is still more effective than last year’s

Schneider (?) - Fox
Miller - Borgen
Vak - Mancini (?) Jones (?)

Surprised to not see Zac Jones's name as an add-on in any of these rumors.
Not surprising to me, it’s obvious his value is zip

If he had any value he’d be gone by now. Yet another instance of the team killing its value of young players by holding onto them for too long

The rangers getting miller for the peanuts rumored OR him going to carolina is fine with me. As long as we're not trading young assets with bright futures, I can live with it. I don't have a ton of faith that a mid first this year will end up being something incredible, especially with the Rangers recent handling of young guys. Top "x" protected first, lindy & chytil seems like a no brainer.

If it's Miller for Chytil and Lindgren that's fine. Just need that third piece to be something other than a first. I'm fine with it being a one of Sykora/Chlemar but not both.

Larry reported that Drury is willing to give the current core another 3 years.
That's impossible because this summer is the beginning of material changes. Not all will be dealt. There is a very strong possibility Kreider is gone by this summer and Panarin isn't back after the 2025-26 season.

Miller is really good and the rumored costs don’t seem to be particularly expensive either and yet I just can’t get all the way on board.
For me it's because we need a build around that is young and cheap. Unicorns basically. Miller isn't it.

He keeps repeating this same BS until he thinks someone will believe him. Larry didn't report it, he opined it on his podcast. In print he never said any such thing.

If the deal is Chytil, Lindgren & a 1st, how can you possibly be adverse to that?

Chytil, as much as we like him, isn't long for this sport. Plus how long are we going to wait for him to realize his potential. He's 25, not 22, at this point he really is who is he.

Lindgren is literally a throw in & addition by subtraction. The 1st is probably going to land about 12-15 & sure it hurts, but you need to give to get & we'd be getting a perennial 90 point player.

The biggest thing is does is signal a shift to the core & also takes away one of Lavi's favorite toys. The team should improve immediately, simply because Fox would have an NHL partner for the 1st time in 2 years.
The reason to be averse to it is exactly what he said, there’s no plan. It’s haphazard and signals that Drury, who two months ago wanted to rip this teams core arpart supposedly, now is willing to double down on it, trading younger assets and futures for a 32 year old forward. If you told me we were swapping Zibanejad for Miller and then selling off our rentals while looking ahead that would be different. But that’s not what is going to happen probably. This trade is fine in a vacuum, it’s not for where the rangers are at.

If the plan involves acquiring good players for small returns that seems like a good plan to me. Just because he wants to add Miller now and can't immediately trade Kreider/Zibanejad doesn't mean he can't trade one of those guys in the future. The moves don't need to be made simultaneously.

If he's not giving up any of the guys he drafted then there is a plan.

Laba, Perrault, Mancini, Garand, Othmann, Sykora, Chlemar, Fortescue are all Drury's guys. Half those guys will have a shot to make the roster to begin next season.
