Seems like a sunken cost fallacy. You can still cash in on Borgen too. Unless you think Borgen is a vital piece to a cup winning defense, you don't resign him just because of a perceived price you paid. Cut your nose to spite your face.
Zibanejad for Marner if the Leafs don't think they can re-sign him? Similar to the Mika for Rantanen deal that Renaud Lavoie suggested yesterday.
Zibanejad is set to play with Nylander at the 4Nations. I'm certain Mika would accept a trade to Toronto.
I'm not sure I want to pay $12 million+ to another winger, but at least we would get out of Mika's albatross contract.
Until they lose a few then we're going to hear all about the issues again.

Playing better or not, everyone who knows hockey knows we don't currently have the blueline for a cup run.
You don't win with a #1, three #4s, one #5, and a bunch of replacement level fodder.
The team isn't rebuilding so as much fun as it is to play around with sell-off scenarios, I don't think they are likely. Mabe one more high prices player gets moved, but we're sitting on cap space and there has been every indication Drury will use it to replace Trouba eventually.

Borgen is playing well. Awesome. Maybe the Rangers can get a first round pick with retention in the deal. Borgen and Smith with 50% retention for both players to Edmonton for 1st round pick in 2026(top 10 lottery protected) or first round pick in 2027 with no protection, 2nd round pick in 2025 from the Blues and a 4th round pick in 2026. Depending upon on how the rest of the moves, Borgen could come back in the summer.
The players playing well have more value than the players who stink and make too much money. Everyone dwells on the lousy players.
Brooksie brought up Cozens in the pod. Where would he play with Mika and Trocheck on the team? Chytil too when healthy. I would blow everyone out of here to fit in Cozens. Play him at center. EF said everyone loves Trocheck. Wonderful. We should be able to get a really good return for him.

Borgen is interesting in terms of re-signing. I’m not sure I want to pay him 4M to play on the 3rd pairing going forward and I’m not sure he’s a guy you want on your 2nd pairing if you are a legitimate contender. What happens with Schneider? It adds a layer of questions if the rangers keep him. I think the prudent move is to get as much value as you can out of him in a trade. Unless the rangers change course and have the guts to trade Schneider in a package for a younger forward.

The rangers are probably going to decide if they are going to trade Borgen on deadline day. That won't stop people from being at each others throats over the decision for the next 2 months. I think they intend to re-sign him but if someone offers a first, sure, i'll trade him.

I don't get anyone deluding themselves about what they will do. Dolan calls the shots. he sees a team that was drastically underperforming after a historic regular season last year and a sustained period of success over 3 years after a rebuild, and he thinks they should compete. he tells drury make it happen. they traded picks for copp, vatrano, tank, kane, and Reilly smith as recently as july. They cleared space to sign igor, traded malcontents (jones is next) and rebuilt the bottom of their defense. this is all to have success right now, to compete right now, and to win right now.
how anyone could see otherwise is beyond me. to think they'll trade the team and rebuild is complete delusion.*

the delusion is with anyone who thinks doing something other than most correct course of action is the way to go. That means Dolan and everyone else who wants win now in spite of what bern has demonstrated that win now = fail fail, must ultimately learn with da bern. In the meantime, we will all suffer

Even if you were optimistic about the last few games the margins for the Rangers making the playoffs are shit. From past experience heroic runs into the final stretch of the season that end with the team out anyway or even just squeezing in just land us with worse draft position and/or deplete our prospect pool if we make some deal out of desperation. The real issues then tend to just get worse.

I feel like, at best, if we can get the top 4 figured out an find a real stud anchor then the coach can assign Borgen a roll i believ he can fill.

3rd pair. Reliable. Bad cop when needed. Chip in a few pts as needed. Consentrate on Defense and giving 100% for 10 minutes a night.
If he isnt seeking crazy money and coach doesnt put more than that on his plate. I see a guy who we'd be over paying via FA begging for, or trading for, when we are competitive again.
The salary matters. But I think he could fill that specific role. One less hole to fill. Similar to how everyone is complaining about letting Mikkola walk to FLA.

If we don't rebuild we will just continue the pattern of being good enough to get to the playoffs and not good enough to win the Cup.This entire organization and it's philosophy needs a complete overhaul for this team to ever take the next step.

Do they sign Borgen by the deadline then? Because if they don't the ball's in his court. He can go to unrestricted free agency in July and get the best deal he can. So if Drury doesn't trade or sign him before the deadline he either pays Borgen what he wants after deadline day or gets nothing while watching him walk away.
The other part of that is Borgen's a RD. And we have Fox, Schneider and Mancini. That position is not even close to being the weakest position on the team.
I can't say with certainty what Drury is going to do in the end but if I were in his shoes and there was a good offer for his services out there I'd be moving him.
