While I don't disagree with the sentiment that we need more "meat and potatoes" guys, you know what happens when you have a team like that? People say "we need more skilled players." Hard to find players who are both.
Which is what happened with the Tortorella teams. We had plenty of those types. But we really lacked a gamebreaker then. There's a balance to be had

Mika is everyone’s favorite target no matter how he’s playing. He’s been noticeably better lately. He’s far from the biggest problem.
Noticeably better is still not an 8.5m player. I'll admit his goal today was actually the type of offense he needs to produce, and he did have more bite on his shot.

His defense is poor (he's been relegated to playing defense as if he's a wing not a center), he's not breaking out with the puck, he's more of a passenger than controlling play which is what he needs to be.

Our defense is the full problem. Fix the defense and we look significantly better. Thats a harder problem though.

I dont think Drury fails to see the problem. I think the media doesn't understand the problem.
Drury moving Kakko is the only subtraction of actual talent.
Moving Mika wouldn't be a subtraction of talent because currently he's got nothing.

That being said yeah the problem is our talent isn't producing, our defense isn't getting the puck out of the zone.
Currently our best 2 way forward is probably chytil, he's the only one who really looks engaged and dynamic all game in each end.
Chytil is subpar defensively, unfortunately. Not critically obviously, he's a great 2C i think

I said our best. I said engaged. I didnt say good.

He's capable of getting it out, transitioning with speed. Trocheck is capable of getting it out, but doesn't push the pace.

Mika is playing better but we would be better off not comparing how bad our players are at this point imo. At this point Im looking at guys in only 2 ways. Are they part of the problem or part of the solution. I don't care anymore if player A only sucks at a 5 level while player B sucks at a 7 level. I really don't want to hear but XYZ teammate is worse anymore.

Lindgren with a -3 today and that's even before flipping the puck over the glass on his lonesome. His dragging Fox down is a tale as old as time.

Someone tell me why it's so hard for Lavi to just put Miller and Fox together. It worked. And even when it didn't work out well, they were still a pair on the decent side of the stats.
I thought Fox was minus 3 and Lindy was minus 2. Regardless Fox was really out of position on multiple goals. In his defense I have no idea what Phil Housely is asking our defense to do but to me he looked like a kid chasing the puck regardless of side or how high. If that is by design we probably need a new nore traditional D coach.

Seeing as Zib has had bad performance issues all season, it really wouldn't require an "explanation" in his case.
How will you justify scratching him now? Looks like a new player after the x-mas break and the best player on the team over the past couple of games.

Wait until he is playing like shit again and then scratch him? What if he continues to improve, what then? What is the big plan here?

Why was the Mika thread closed? I see journalists floating talks of a trade for him. Would be fun to discuss if only to make fun of (since they all seem to forget his NMC).

Lot of pipe dream mika for miller being discussed by the "pros" right now, which is super cute.

Because we already have these pipe dreams here without another thread

People saying the rangers need meat and potatoes is really misunderstanding the problem.

You don't win anything with "just" meat and potatoes. We had meat and potatoes.
When meat and potatoes are your primary, secondary, tertiary scoring options, you dont win anything.

You need a top 6 who can score. You need some east west, you need some north south.

Meat and potatoes is Cuylle. Cuylle on a line where he's the best player on the line does absolutely nothing. It might be fun to watch for a few shifts, but it does nothing.

You NEED skill to win. You need centers to win.
Our problem is that our top 6 can't score and doesn't play defense.
We have what looks like 3 defenders who are capable of being NHL defenders. Now some of that is helped by an actual #1D, but we need guys who can get the puck out and stretch the ice.

You dont get "meat and potatoes". You replace the underperforming players. Meat and potatoes is Callahan. You want north south with skill, thats not "meat and potatoes".
Yeah. Everybody got the wrong takeaways from Florida’s cup imo (which they almost lost). Florida is not an unskilled team. Who’s your Barkov? If you can’t answer that question, then don’t model your team after Florida.
