Center depth is not "overrated" its properly rated.

Every cup team has had at least a True #1 since the cap.

Past 10 -
FL - Barkov
VGK - Eichel
COL - Mackinnon
Tampa - Point
STL - ROR
WSH - Backstrom
PIT - Crosby
PIT - Crosby
CHI - Toews
LAK - Kopitar

You want to go back further?

I agree that you can probably get away with weaker centers at 2/3 if you have better centers.
But the reason I was so excited about the rangers the past few years was WE HAD CENTER DEPTH
Mika was a 1b
Trocheck was a high end 2A/low end 1b
Chytil was a high 3A or even low 2b

Centers can be augmented by a high end wing, but not to the extent that you need defensively.

Rantanen isn't really a "safe buy" because he's a wing who while he does play the game in the style we want (heavy physical and still scores), he's rarely been the teams primary option.
He's also not been the loudest voice in the room.

Agree on Rantanen, we need to draft a C who develops into an real, proper star player in the worst way. Not that that hasn't been the case since Mess left. I never remotely thought Mika was going to be a Cup winning C, regardless of what we put around him in the way of wingers.

I will say this… the lack of a move coming out of the freeze takes my interest in watching this team tonight and over the next stretch from a soft 2 out of 10 to a flat out zero. Like, my entire family will have to leave me home alone and there will have to be nothing else on TV, no other streaming service functioning and no video games working for me to even think “oh boy, Rangers game tonight”. Trimming Loki’s nails would be more interesting and productive.

The thing that bugs me about the quote is that it says GMs “didnt know a deal was going down that fast” not that the player wasn’t available. Which kind of indicates that Drury got an offer he thought was decent and just goes, “okay, done” instead of waiting to see if other offers come in and negotiating based off the offer he already had in his pocket, OR - god forbid - actually calling other GMs himself and saying “Seattle offered X and I’m taking it by 5pm so send your best offer”. Which indicates that either Borgen was his actual target, which is just a sadly low bar he’s setting (Blais was the target too though, right?) or he just takes the first offer that comes in and sucks at his job.
Drury sucks at his job; he acts like thinks he's way smarter than he actually is.

I do not know what goes on behind the scenes so its hard for me to have an informed opinion. With that said didn't many people on this board insist it was impossible to trade Goody and Trouba without retaining salary?
Those two moves worked out, but overall he's handled things badly. Hasn't learned from how he handled the prospects; does everything the same way. Giving Shesterkin a NMC was idiotic. BTW; the players are acting like pampered spoiled brats too, so much blame to go around.

If that was the best offer for Kakko, they should've kept him; waited until the trade deadline before moving him.

Kakko was on the block in the media for weeks, and available on their internal Slack for way longer.

Is Drury supposed to send out a bat signal or something that he's really super serious this time and stop sending offers considering of AHLers and 6ths in 2029?
That wasn't any part of what I was saying.

He should've held Kakko until the deadline if that was the best offer in December

That's my point.

Drury has been one of the busiest GM’s so far this season though. Shesterkin. Lafreniere. Trouba. Kakko.

I mean the team isn’t half way through their season yet and they have made 4 major moves (2 re-signings). I’m not saying that he should be done but we have to at least keep things in perspective. Many other teams may prefer to wait to see how their season unfolds more before looking to add a Lindgren, Kreider or Smith

Eichel would be a massive mistake.

His injury history is extensive and it hasn’t really been much better in Vegas than it was in Buffalo.! That isn’t going to change as he ages. It’s likely to get worse.

Rantanen would be a much safer buy. Center depth is overrated.
This is exactly the move this team / Drury will make tho.

So predictably bad, late & shortsighted

I'm on the outside so I dont feel confident commenting on what goes on behind closed doors. As the GM would you have passed on Igor if he insisted on a NMC? Some teams search for a decade for a goalie like Igor. We had 7 long years of bad goaltending. In regards to the prospects what would you have done differently with Lias, Krav and KK over the years?

That is possible but holding on to KK for years reduced his value imo. Is there any guarantee that come the deadline we would have got more? What if KK got injured or only had 8-9 goals at the deadline?

Sure. That's a risk. But then you have to sit Kreider & Lindgren & Z also because of injury concerns.

I dunno... with a severely underwhelming return, I would've stayed pat & waited until I got at least a 2nd & or the deadline.

It’s not about active vs inactive. Just watchable vs unwatchable. This team flat out blows and isn’t enjoyable in any capacity. I just want something new to pay attention to out there - and Borgen and Vaakanainen ain’t it.

I get that, and I agree. I think Drury is trying to be methodical and move in the right direction. It just takes time.

What do people think of Nick Robertson? Let’s assume Borgen or Lindgren are desired pieces for Toronto. Would we like to see if Robertson would fit in NY long term? I’d consider it. The guy has scored at every level

Honestly I think some people (not you) just like to over react a bit. Some people that say it was a crazy low return but also admit KK never would have got a 1st and they wanted a 2nd. Some even mention Lias got a 2nd. The 2nd we got for Lias was number 60. If the season ended today the Seattle pick would probably be around 65. Plus we got Borgen (who can be traded) and a 6th. So is that so dramatically different?

They lost me when it was clear they were running it back. Can’t waste my time on another fruitless season. There isn’t a player on the roster I care about.

Bread and a handful of others are still trying. Laffy started the season well. Not sure why he has taken a step back lately.

That's my point.

If he'd held KK until the deadline, he would have gotten less and/or worse. After his comments to the press about being scratched and publicly pointing the finger at his coach, KK would have spent the next two months in the pressbox. I don't think any coach is going to have that player in his lineup. If he is in the lineup, he's get little to no ice time.

I believe KK was beyond the point of bringing in a 2nd.

I don't. Already reports teams would have made a better offer for Kakko had they known Drury was looking to ship him out so fast. He easily would have brought back a 2nd. Guy is a NHL player who will have a long career, whether this board wants to admit that or not.

It was idiotic in that they gave out another NMC after the troubles they've gotten themselves into with them. Gives the players all the power, which has led to the shitshow they've had for the last 2 months.

Teams have won Stanley Cups with average goaltending (got hot at the right time). The prospect's development was butchered; he was a part of that. The players were not without blame, but in retrospect, the NYR should not have drafted them, which speaks of their player evaluations process. He was in the room for those also.

Honestly, looking at Drury’s acquisitions and drafts, he emphasizes the opposite of soft. Who is a top draft choice or a player he traded for who is soft? Othmann, Sykora, Emery, Perrault… none are soft.
He hasn't gotten the NHL roster more tougher to play against especially on defense. Very soft

He made it to the ECF 2 of his 3 seasons. His draft picks are just starting to join the team. He's had success. Can't really say he's a bottom 3 GM based on facts.
The trades he made were awful

I do not like the NMC in general for anyone in the NHL but if that is a non negotiable would you just let Igor leave?

I do not know if I can blame Drury for how Lias, Krav and KK turned out. Firstly I do not think Drury had much to do with Lias at all. Lias has been gone for a while and on 2 other teams I believe.

In terms of Krav and KK I will have to see how they do in other organizations before making my mind up. I actually think Krav might one day have a NHL career but I do not think he was mentally nor physically ready for the NHL and sadly he did not want to play in the AHL.

This is the chicken and the egg. This right here is why I'm nyr you don't usually see long periods with a splash acquisition. I'm not saying it's to appease people like you, but the attitude you share here (which is justified) is something business ops watches that sometimes leads to player moves or additions. Where's the new marketable "thing?" Nyr has been stale for awhile and to add to it they are boring to watch

He didnt "come of strong pushing for the job"

The org literally told him "hey we love you, but you have to put in the work, we can't hand you anything" And he told the org to take a flying leap.

Messier wants to be handed a job on the glory of '94.
He absolutely cannot go 3 sentences at any point without mentioning it when broadcasting.

You want to talk about spoiled? You want to talk about entitled? Hows it going to look to the players when we hand someone a job, who has had zero coaching experience in his career. Talking about "setting the tone and teach players not to be entitled"
Literally the opposite message.

We bitch about Drury. At least he put in the work.
