The "rebuild" was a stupid idea in the first place. They had a good team. All they needed to do was sell at the deadline in 2018 come back the next year with a new coach who gave a shit. Coincidentally thats exactly what this team should do.
no disagree
there is usually a constant need to not only tweak but make moves for developmental improvement in whole organization not just the varsity

yr posture would have us stand pat and atrophy

Yeah the NHL is the soap opera the league likes to pretend it isnt.

Ok maybe not Christmas day but what about the other 4 days this week where no sports were on? The NHL couldnt compete with the Hawaii Bowl on Tuesday or a 6-3 Final NFL game on Thursday that was a streaming exclusive?
I was responding to Knicks comparison. Its much easier to completely overhaul a roster in the NBA. Big trades happen way more often

Buffalo and Ottawa are unfair comparisons.
Ownership issues, which led to poor management.
Undesirable location for most players.
Detroit still can be salvaged, they have some talented youth.

Depends what you consider salvaged. They were a bubble team last year. They've gone 8 years in a row without making the playoffs and it's likely about to be 9 (5 with Yzerman). I don't think there's any point you could consider this rebuild a success given how long it took to become good, if they even become good next year.

The team will be practicing today. I, for one, will be interested in what Chris Kreider has to say. You know, assuming he's there.
We've heard enough of his platitudes. I want to see this guy skate with authority more than once every 10 games. Stop flying by checks and actually win some board battles. Stupid passes may be too much to ask for.

That roster reminded me of the Bills from 2021-2023. Good enough to win meaningful games and make the playoffs, but not enough to push them over the edge.

That core was not good enough. They had multiple opportunities and kept losing for the same reasons. The rebuild was 100% needed.

Shame we never saw it through completely. Blame Dolan for stepping in. Blame our spectacular ability of wrecking the development of our top-10 picks. I’m not too critical of what happened with Lias. That was a shit draft after the 4th pick which Gorton tried to get. Kravtsov was a shit pick though.

I find it comical how so many casuals on this website seem to know more than the professionals that get paid big bucks to run an organization. We were all skeptical of Zibanejad’s extension. We all see Lindgrens ineptitude. We all hated Goodrow’s contract. Buch trade. Overpaying for MSL. The horrendous McD and JTM trade. Signing Nemeth and burning our 2nd to move him a year later.

The rebuild was the correct move. But, the pros running this organization f***ed it up. Like they always do. It’s no surprise we haven’t won a cup in 3 decades. I swear, I wholeheartedly believe someone like Gag, RB or Machinehead would have more success running this franchise than the halfwits currently employed.

Bingo

The NHL is the most conservative league there is when it comes to transactions. Totally different ballgame when discussing what needs to be done to overhaul a roster.

The Zibanejad contract was the killer. And I really blame Mika for that more than anyone. By every metric he was a top 10-15 center in the league when he signed it. He's become a special teams only guy since, and he's not even good on the PP anymore. A lot of it looks like effort to me. He and Kreider were probably guys who didnt need to see the rebuild through.

It pays to not be conservative in the NHL. The risk taking teams are the one's that win Cups.

It's also funny that the NBA and NFL battled for Christmas viewership and the NHL took the week off. And they wonder why they get left in the dust financially.
Had they scheduled games for Christmas, everyone would be questioning why they are going up against the NFL and NBA.

The NHL has their big thing with the Winter Classic, this year on New Year's Eve. The NBA only has 6 games scheduled for that day, and the NFL doesn't have any.

Like it or not, the NFL and NBA are more popular than the NHL, and there's not much the NHL can actually do to change that. Scheduling games at the same time will only result in the NHL losing money.

Ok but that doesnt explain why they took a week long break. There were 0 pro sports on Tuesday. Is the NHL doing so well financially that they can take off for a week (while kids are off from school) when they could easily be leveraging falling NBA ratings? All the standalone NFL games have been unwatchable too. Missed opportunity by a risk averse industry. It's a shame.

We might be just as bad next year.
The funny thing is.....that might be the only thing that saves us from ourselves and have any hope of a really good team in 5 years time . People forget that the Devils have 8 yrs invested in Herschier-6 yrs in Bratt and 4 in Mercer . Sure they got lucky with Hughes....but that is not always the case . Plus they had to give Meier 10 Million and some picks to get and keep him in town and they are still only an 8th place league wide best team now .....maybe?

As someone else said, it may have been negotiated by the players. That seems far more likely than the NHL just deciding not to air any games on those days.

Funny is a good word to describe the Devils being anointed by the league and fans as some powerhouse to emulate. The only reason they even have a playoff series win this decade is the "laughingstock" Rangers shit down their leg and blew a 2-0 series lead. They were in the same boat last year that we are now, but no one cares about them and they are irrelevant so it wasnt a story.

Right and Im saying that's a mistake, and part of the reason why the NHL players continue to make a fraction of the money the pros in the other major leagues make.

The 24th, 25th, and 26th are negotiated off days in the CBA. It used to be only the 24th and 25th but players were finding it tough to get back to their home cities in time from wherever they were for Christmas for games on the 26th (especially with those teams that have to travel to a road city the day of on the 26th.)

This is why Lindgren has to go no matter what. Every coach either doesn't want to move him away from Fox or they know he sucks when he is away from Fox.

I don't mind playing the new guys with players already in the system, but try Vaak with Fox for a bit. I'm curious what Miller-Borgen can do. Great skaters with size.

He's not elite? That's ridiculous.

Also, take a look at his stats in the playoffs beyond points. Like CF%. Look at the Rangers "offense" when he's out of the lineup.

He had 15 points in 16 games last year, FWIW, until he ran into the Panthers who, wisely, stuck to him like glue.

The problem the Rangers have with Panarin is that they don't have ANOTHER Panarin. Teams key on him and really don't have to worry much about the rest.

I think calling him a B+ talent is ridiculous.

I also think that setting the bar so low that calling 15 points in 16 games good after he had the second most productive regular season in franchise history is equally as ridiculous.
