The NHL had a good idea this year by doing a full slate of games, all starting at intervals.

Except they did that on a random Tuesday. How about negotiating that for Boxing day? And make it in-division rivalries while you're at it. Start games around noon ET, 30min intervals or something.

The most obvious move ever is to claim Saturday' or Sunday's post NFL, have everyone play, stagger the games and have a red zone type whiparound show that will jump to close games, powerplays, etc. Show every goal like its a TD. That one's free bettman, idk how you havent done it yet. They can compete with college basketball.

No argument here I would like Drury to be ruthless with these guys. It's possible to run a successful organization under Dolan. Leon Rose is currently doing it in a more difficult situation. Now let's see if Drury can turn our unwanted crap into our KAT, OG & Bridges.
NHL is totally different

Do they still do Hockey Day In America?

I remember fit a couple of years at least NBC would have a couple of games start at noon and shown regionally across America. Then standalone games in the late afternoon and primetime. That was pretty cool.

It's definitely in the CBA. The problem is that these standalone "event" type games are economic opportunities that the league and players pass up. The only good idea the league has had in years is the outdoor games and even those are getting oversaturated.

How would playing on Christmas day be an economic opportunity when the NBA already has ESPN locked in all day and the NFL is now playing too? It would seem that would be a very poor viewership day and it's better not to play then,

His defense is excellent, top of the league quality. He's physical. He kills penalties, hits (yes, he does initiate lol maybe not as much as Luke Schenn but he hits), blocks shots.

He's not fast. That's not changing.

He has 1 goal. If he had 4 we'd still be well out of the playoffs and his season would be how different? Seriously.

We don't have to go back and forth. Fox is playing great, even though he only has one goal. I don't know why that's so crazy to be realistic about.
prob is not only is that not good now, it is worse going forward
It actually IS changing in that he can/will only get slower

and again, protection kicks in soon and we are stuck then

remember when I said let's deal Trouba to DET?
bern being bern, etc
Then protection kicked in.

Will be same w/Fox if we are not proactive

I agree. If there was a sole timeslot maybe, but not NHL vs NFL/NBA combined at the same time. The ratings would be really low in the USA.

Yeah the NHL is the soap opera the league likes to pretend it isnt.

Ok maybe not Christmas day but what about the other 4 days this week where no sports were on? The NHL couldnt compete with the Hawaii Bowl on Tuesday or a 6-3 Final NFL game on Thursday that was a streaming exclusive?

It’s why this talk of “rebuilds” is so childish. The Rangers are evaluating the team. Drury has made some dumb moves and handled things with a heavy hand, but in terms of knowing what type of player the team needs, and being willing to give chances to the youth, he’s been consistent.

More moves are coming, I’ve liked the ones he’s made so far. I expect Lindgren and Kreider to be moved before the season is over. And Panarin and Zibanejad will be approached in the summer. We’re going to get younger and more assets by default when these guys are moved. Well most likely get better as well.

Translation......Coach is the problem

He did to Larry earlier this month.

Post Sports+ Inside The Rangers

A heart-to-heart with Chris Kreider on the state of the spiraling Rangers

I generally like to use this opportunity to interact with you on off-topics, perhaps personal recollections from nearly five decades — seven decades, really, counting the 50-cent GO seats in the side balcony at the old barn and the blue seat I occupied as a season subscriber in the new place’s original Section 419 — immersed with the Rangers.

But there are no off-topics today. There is only one topic, and that is the team spiral that threatens to send the 2024-25 Blueshirts into a very dark place.
I can tell you with absolute confidence there is no credibility to the report that first popped up over the weekend on the social media platform X linking the Rangers to Joel Quenneville. That was spun out of thin air. There has been no contact between the parties and there will be no contact between the parties.

The Rangers are not going to fire Peter Laviolette. The Rangers are committed to Peter Laviolette. They are not bum-rushing this coach out of town.
Monday’s 5-1 defeat to the Devils at the Garden was different but the same. Igor Shesterkin, the last line of defense and often the only line of defense, finally broke after being under siege from the opening 10 minutes of the season in Pittsburgh through the holiday weekend. That was different.
And just past the midway point of the match, the Rangers held a 25-10 advantage in shots though trailing 3-0. That was different.

But the mistakes and turnovers in critical areas were the same. The bevy of early odd-man rushes/breakaways was the same. The lack of physicality was the same. The body language was the same.

'It's just not acceptable'

I spent some time alone with Chris Kreider after the match. On another night, I would have led the column with his quotes. On almost any other night. But I wanted to focus on what needs to be done over these three off-days in advance of Friday’s tilt against the Penguins.

So I’ll tell you now what Kreider told me in an emotional exchange in which No. 20 needed time to frame his responses. Kreider generally breaks down games by X’s and O’s. He always has stressed the importance of communication on the ice. But this was not about X’s and O’s. This was from the heart.
We all know Kreider was one of two players specifically cited in that “memo” distributed throughout the league by GM Chris Drury a little over a week ago that seems like five years ago. Jacob Trouba, of course, was the other.

Safe to say, the team has reacted poorly to it.

So I asked Kreider how much of an impact the outside noise has had on the way the team has gone about its business over the past week.
“I don’t think it’s unwarranted pressure,” he said. “I mean, we put a ton of pressure on ourselves. We came into the season expecting to have success, but this is where we are and have to recognize it.

“How does it affect us? We’ve gone over and gone over the things we need to do better, but there’s a little lapse here, a little lapse there and it’s ending up in the back of our net. It’s just not acceptable.”

The team’s structure has been a model of papier-mâché. But I have felt that the club’s mentality has been off almost from the start. I think that has had an impact on everything the team does.

I wrote this about a week ago, but a team that is so disconnected on the ice cannot be connected off the ice.

The unit has broken down. There are too many players with perceived grievances. It has not been a particularly healthy atmosphere.

Gives an eff

I brought up the team’s psyche to Kreider. This is where the F-bombs started to fly.

“Obviously, we’re going through more than I think I’ve ever experienced,” Kreider, who first joined the band for the 2012 playoffs and has experienced all of this era, told me.

“I know I keep beating this drum, but we need to f--king work through it and come out better on the other side or else….but 'or else' is not an option. We have one f--king option.

“The only option for us is to f--king continue to work, continue to try to f--king pick each other up better,” he said, his voice rising. “There were better moments tonight, but we still lose the game f--king 5-1.

“Better moments, but another bad start. Cannot happen, but it does. There was a bounce here, a bounce there, but it is not about bounces.

“We’ve got to play a f--king brand of hockey that leaves absolutely no doubt,” he said. "We have to play a brand of hockey that’s going to guarantee wins.”

By this point, other reporters gravitated to the corner locker that Kreider has inhabited for a very long time. Our conversation ended.

There are three days here for the hierarchy, the coaching staff and the playing personnel to identify the infection that has spread through the room and to devise a strategy to eradicate it.

Next week, maybe I can get back to an off-topic. But at this moment, there is only one topic.

The locker room issues have been there since the summer. Arthur Staple and Vince Mercogliano reported there were issues over Goodrow and Trouba. We discussed it here. We thought it was BS. These guys are paid professionals. They will move on. They did not move on.

Larry Brooks said the issues were festering during training camp and the sentiment or resentment towards Drury has carried over into the season. These guys sabotaged their season worrying about Goodrow and Trouba. Brooks said there has been a bad vibe since training camp.

Trocheck's comments were damage control. The players looked bad with the "reports" about the players wanting the GM to be fired. You would dismiss that report and call nonsense but these guys have mad since the summer. Their feelings since the summer gave that "report" validity. Drury met with the players in Dallas and some people said this moment could be a turning a point. The Rangers beat Dallas and dropped games to Carolina and NJ. Some turning point.

I want Drury to gut the room. Mollie mentioned trades at the end of her story. Major players. I want to see Zibanejad crying over Kreider being traded. Have Michele Gingras interview him. We can laugh at Mika. So Mika what are thoughts on Chris being traded??? It's tough. I can't. PR guy please save me.

The holiday roster freeze is over. The Christmas break is over. Some of these teams have 4 or 5 days off. Another two week break in February for the 4 Nations. Then the players complain about no practice time. Practice? Having 4 or 5 days off for XMAS and then 10 plus days for a tournament results in no practice time. We can't practice our PP. You guys wanted a long XMAS break and more International events. The Rangers are playing tomorrow. Four days off. Ottawa has not played since Sunday and Saturday is their next game. Five full days.
You must have some Sicilian in your genetics. Not knocking it.
Count me in, amicu!

Yep, I explained in a previous response while he’s been elite in the regular season, his playoff performances haven’t been as good and that’s why I don’t consider him an elite talent. I’ll admit probably a bit unfair to lump him with Gaborik and Nash, but like them he was brought here to produce in the playoffs and to me that the separator between elite and very good.
Thank god Ovi has one Cup or he’d also be a B+ player

Yeah I saw he dropped a few F-bombs within earshot of Brooks but that was weeks ago. His play has continued to dip since, and he's been scratched, so it rings a little hollow in hindsight.

You're right! But he did speak.

Despite him being my favorite player, and my last one, he earned his scratch. It was all lip service unfortunately.

There have always been issues in that room. Lundqvist, Zib et al. hated to see Zuccarello go. The "rebuild" left a core of disgruntled vets in place who wanted to compete for the cup and who never had the patience to wait for the kids to grow up. The current meltdown was always in the works because the rebuild never was.

Add a management who was divided with itself. A "rebuild" which wasn't a rebuild, firing Quinn for failing to make the playoffs while "the letter" promising a real rebuild still had wet ink. Signing expensive UFAs to motor the team while the team was still very much a work in progress. Corporate turmoil at every level.

Management have shat the bed in royal fashion. The split in the team has been evident since 2019. The lack of brains at the top, the inability to think one step ahead of the most average and predictable decision possible, is absolutely pathetic.

The NYR is a TED talk in how to f*** things up. Congratulations on that magnificent President's Trophy NYR. Polish that trophy because it truly is the comfort level of this organization.

The "rebuild" was a stupid idea in the first place. They had a good team. All they needed to do was sell at the deadline in 2018 come back the next year with a new coach who gave a shit. Coincidentally thats exactly what this team should do.

I’ve been a Fox Forever fan. But since those two injuries last year he hasn’t been the same player. He’s just been slow and lethargic. If his season’s play to date is not due to an injury then he needs to be dealt while that window is still open.
Sad, we just can never have nice things.
