Speculation: Roster Building Thread : Part XV (Light em up!)

Would personally love this, possibly the hardest group of forwards in the league to play against and lots of skill, but I can’t imagine that ever happening.

I really have warmed up to the idea of Dylan Cozens. Seems like he's available and a similarly aged and contract term center for Lafreniere is a no brainer and a huge need.

He can't block a trade to every team. I would play hardball with him to open up the list.. Waivers is an option. You can join your buddy Trouba in Anaheim since you love him so much. Kreider was too emotional to talk about the Trouba situation. These guys are pampered and soft. 8th graders. EF always says you can't write your ending. It's that way in his business. Look at Marek. It's the same way in the NHL. Time to go Chris.

This is exactly why you're not a GM.

Chris Kreider deserves more respect than this. It's that simple. End of discussion.

Did you say this when Henrik was emotional and brought to tears when Zuccarello was traded? That big softie!

I know the comparison is not valid as they are two players with different skill sets, but I am beginning to think of Fox and Ryan McDonaugh in the same way.

When he first came up and in his first few years with us, I thought that RM would not only be an all-time great Ranger but he might be on a HOF track. He was that good (in the mode of all-around, great skating Dmen that seemed to be in vogue at the time).

But his career was somewhat derailed by shoulder injuries (and perhaps being put in a leadership role too quickly). He was never quite the same after his injury. He has had a fine, long, career as a #1 pair D but never quite reached the pinnacle I thought he was capable of.

In his first years here, Fox was definitely on a HOF track. I no longer think so. I am wondering whether the knee injury that hampered him in the playoffs last year has become a chronic thing, robbing him of just a bit of speed and quickness and reducing his overall effectiveness.

If he can't regain that bit of speed either through time helping to heal it, surgery, or working at his skating, he will still be a fine D but, at least I think, no longer a future HOFer.

We really don't know what is going on with him except to say that he is not the player he was before whatever the injury he suffered last year. As he approaches that dreaded 30-year-old mark, his skating will probably deteriorate even further in a few years.

It's sad to see. I hope I'm wrong.

McDonagh shouldve been the guy to keep through the rebuild. A true warrior and leader, as you can see with how he solidified the defense with the Lightning on the way to 2 Cups. We thought he was cooked until he was on a team surrounded by guys he could share the load with. We should take that lesson to hear with Fox.

Everyone deserves respect. But not for 1 f***ing second does any player deserve to get put in front of the betterment of the team! If they can move Giacomin, Ratelle, Park, Leetch, Lundqvist you better bet they can sure as shit move Chris Kreider and anyone else. What is best for the team? That is all that matters. Get attached to the name on the front not the back. Build a winner is all that matters, trade, buy out, cut, whatever it takes to win. Enough with the “player x” deserves better. Win a f***ing cup then maybe players can talk about deserving better. This team cried and quit because Drury played a little hardball, shut the **** up, the goal is to win CUPS!

Fox needs to hit the gym and train hard. He’sa phenomenal hockey player but he’s not physically gifted.

We saw what it did with Zibs. He trained hard one off season and then had a career year. Then life/lifestyle took precedent and he’s been degrading year over year

If you listen to bern and give Rempe pro mins full time, accept growing pains to = development realized, he will get there sooner than later [or possibly not at all if we continue to stupidy sabotage his development/career].
Yeah well, kinda hard to do that because it's not up to the Rangers is it when this buffoon gets himself suspended all the time.

I'm not saying you can't move on from anyone. When a player has been with an organization since 2009 you treat them a little differently because of what they've meant to the organization. Henrik wasn't just bought out. There were discussions with him about it first. And then it was agreed by everyone involved. All I'm saying is Chris Kreider does NOT deserve the Barclay Goodrow and Jacob Trouba treatment.

Christmas is over. Fire Drury.
Me and Jacob are in:

He keeps up his 70+ point annual production, Fox is a slam dunk HOF'er
Hard disagree. This era of defensemen are scoring 80-90 points regularly. 70 is a blip on the radar. Plus I just can't see him being able to keep pace point wise when his skating really starts to hold him back. We're already seeing glimpses of that with his current 62 point pace. Fox needs to win at least another Norris or a Conn Smythe, IMO to have a shot.

As good as he is defensively, voters choose style over substance. Fox isn't gifted physically, nor does he take over games with flashy plays. Like it or not, Makar basically won the Norris over Josi in '22 based on that spin-o-rama goal early that season in Chicago.

Giving guys special treatment is how they get entitled in the first place. It all started with Quinn letting Panarin do whatever he wanted. We havent had a coach since who has been able to wrangle the core vets, and have them play a consistent 5v5 game. Eventually you have to look at the very real possibility that Kreider, Mika & Panarin are coach killers.

I get it, Kreider has been a great Ranger. 3rd period Game 6 against Carolina last year is one of the greatest things I’ve witnessed in 45+ yrs following the Rangers. Reminiscent of 30 yrs ago. But this team needs to retool and turn it over, time to go Chris, thanks for the memories. And take the corpses of Zibannejad, Lindgen, smith etc with you.

If the Rangers are building their defense around Fox going forward, he needs to be the only guy under 6 feet tall. Insulate him with bigger D and especially a partner who skates well and can play 25+ minutes. Having Lindgren and Jones in there holding on for dear life against bigger, stronger forecheckers, is making Fox a much less effective player. Maybe K'Andre can be that with Fox but idk.

This is a different conversation than being on a HOF track, but I agree...we clearly need to surround him with a better d-corps, but part of that responsibility falls on him to train MUCH harder as well.

It seems like an overall team mindset with these guys that they can do the minimum during the off season & they'll wind up in the playoffs. Hopefully this is a giant wake up call to a bunch of these dudes. I'm not in favor of Messier taking over as a coach or any type of GM role, but these kids need to hear from someone like him what it takes to be winners. They currently do not understand what they need to invest to go to the next level. Getting to the playoffs shouldn't be the goal, that's not acceptable.

What is best for the team? Maybe if the Rangers kept those guys, maybe we would have won more than 1 cup in 80 years. How the heck do you know that getting rid of Kreider will help the team?

Because Kreider is on the team currently and isn't helping.

The mandate needs to be "Build around Igor, Fox, Lafreniere" going forward. They can't wait until the summer so Kreider gets a farewell tour in an increasingly lost season. Trades need to continue as soon as the freeze ends. Does anyone expect Kreider to draw back in and the Rangers to look any different against Tampa Bay (lol) and Florida (LOL) before the New Year?

Sorry -- but I don't see how this helps the Habs.
Kreider is a net front presence on the PP. Still one of the best in the NHL. He is still a very good player. Kreider gives them more size. They get an experienced player whom their president of hockey operations knows extremely well. The Habs are under a bit of pressure to get the team headed in the right direction. They can't keep rebuilding forever.

Why can't he be that for us?
