I'm officially on the trade Strome wagon. Not because I don't think he can be an effective secondary scorer, but because of the situation this team is in, I don't think they can allocate the funds he will require to be kept and I'd prefer the future capital in both cap space and assets he returns

.
Nothing personal against Strome but unless he had a red hot Panarin on his line he is basically a ghost. He doesn’t shoot, he fumbles many pucks, etc

If there was indeed some legs to the Rangers trying to acquire Darnell Nurse, that's a player who would really help solidify that left side moving forward. He also plays a pretty physical in your face style that Gorton seems to be looking for. I'd be curious to hear their reaction to something based around DeAngelo for Nurse

There isn't, Edmonton loves him.

They just extended him, no?

I think we just stay the course right now until the players we drafted are ready to contribute. I'd poke around young centers if I'm looking for anything but I think this team has to build from within now since Panarin, Zibby and Trouba will take up a lot of salary going forward.

Trading down from 1OA to 2OA+++ is not at all stupid. Byfield is extremely good

Trading down unless you get an extreme over-payment would be extremely stupid. Trading up from #2 with an extreme over-payment would be equally stupid. So neither is a plausible scenario.

I'll never understand this board's obsession with insisting that fantasy scenarios debunk reality.

Agreed

LA is rebuilding and has no need to trade multiple assets for Lafreniere. They’ll happily walk up to the podium and take Byfield

I love, love, love Byfield and I will be the first to say that taking him over Lafreniere would be absolutely stupid. Passing on the clear BPA who can likely step in immediately for positional need? Delusional.

It was an easy article for Brooksie to write because he's appealing to the red meat, we need moar grit, SHOOOOOOOT the puck on the powerplay crowd. He knows it, and I'm sure there's already people foaming at the mouth for size and grit after Carolina waxed us in 3 games.

The issue is that Carolina didn't beat us by being the bigger, grittier team. They beat us by playing a structured system that pressures you in a 5-man unit all over the ice. Quinn preaches that this is what he wants the Rangers to do, but we haven't seen anything close to resembling this style of hockey. The sandpaper thing is a load of nonsense IMO. Sebastian Aho is 6'0, 175lbs and he was an absolute buzzsaw all series with how he was pressuring the puck and breaking plays up with his stick.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love Byfield, but it's ridiculous to think we should take him 1OA over Lafreniere.

I am by far not the most knowledgeable fan here but I am curious as to the weight that Gorton and JD put into these 4 abysmal games.

I get that we are in unprecedented times, but so are the other teams. We were the worst of everyone IMO. I didn’t watch every game but I saw some from every team and we just looked lost and uninspired.

Id love to hear some insight from folks like @Edge or @bobbop how they feel management views this showing as far as team construct, coaching AND individual players (not just Hank, Staal but even Kreider & Trouba)

Personally, I’m not sure it changes much for them. I think the needs are still the same and the timetable is still the same.

The thing that might have given them some pause is if over the last weeks of the season guys like Kakko, Chytil, Kravtsov really started to explode and grow by leaps and bounds.

But that didn’t happen, even outside the past 3 games. So I think they still see a team that needs depth, some more balance, and time to cook.

I think they’re probably looking at moves that aren’t flashy, and might not even be fans’ preference.

I don’t even think Lafreniere changes anything. I think they’d still bring him along slowly, look for some balance on the right wing side, and I still think they hunt for a LD.

All great points. If there was a scenario in which we could get #2 overall then I'd happily walk away with Byfield and let him develop into an elite center. I think you're potentially looking at a MacKinnon/Barkov sort of situation here if both players hit their ceilings. I.e. they're both tremendous players that you'd love to have but one is a couple years away from a real NHL impact while the other could step in next season and give you 50+ points.

I agree that there are some holes in the system Quinn is rolling out. I'm not sure what the driving factor is there but the system seems to break down quite a bit. Especially against teams with quicker players up front and a mobile defense. Which in itself is concerning since that's the direction the league is taking right now.

That being said, this team clearly needs a "plan B" for winning games when their stars don't show up. Part of that will be elite goaltending (hopefully) and improved scoring depth but that can't be all of it. A well structured defense and guys up front who can play a north/south game are going to be really important. Guys like McKegg and PDG aren't horrible players and they're certainly workers, however I think both could easily be upgraded.

I'd posit that Left Defense, and the defensive rotation in general, is priority number one. Clearing dead cap space in a way that doesn't hurt us down the line is number two.

We're still counting on Chytil eventually turning into a respectable 2nd line center.

That said, since the team still probably won't be quite where we need it to be next season, I'd be comfortable riding the Lundqvist Staal and Smith contracts to conclusion to avoid downstream cap problems.
I think both are of equal importance and both should be addressed.

It would be stupid not to take an offer. Byfield plus assets would be an insane haul. Rangers need more than just one play.

But this is pointless. We aren't getting the top pick.

Well, that is a statistical fallacy. Our chances are as good as anyone's. So that would mean that nobody is getting the top pick. :P

This team desperately needs to add team speed as well as guys who are just hounds on the puck who's job is to make the opponent's lives as miserable as possible. That's what Carolina does so well and why they are so annoying to play against. In every area of the ice, and on every inch of the ice they are in your face, forcing you to make decisions. It was incredible how they seemed to always be first to loose pucks, win 50/50 pucks at will.

When's the last time we saw a Ranger team that did that? Quinn always talks about playing with pace, well it's time to start adding guys to the mix that actually do that.
