Speculation: Roster Building thread: Part XIX (Thanks, Sam)

I think Miller is probably a top 15/20 center in the NHL but contenders have guys firmly in that top 5/7 leading the charge.

They need another version of him up the middle to make it work and push Trocheck down to 3C. That's how you build strong depth

I will say this - there are kind of contradictory things going on from a culture perspective, or maybe not?

Drury is clearly a shitty boss. What is it about him that is shitty? Is he tough on players? Does he call people out? I would have assumed so but I think it's something else and here is why.

If he was outwardly calling guys out, treating people badly, would so many guys feel empowered to just bitch and moan constantly to the media?

I feel like it is much more likely that he is just silent. He doesn't set the tone for the org. Combine that with Lavi really struggling with communication and you are left with players feeling disempowered and unclear on their roles. Complaining to the media makes sense from that regard.

Vitali Kravtsov says hello.

Which is going to happen. Drury allegedly does not like Panarin so the moment he can get rid of him, he will.

And when it happens this team will be in the basement.

Drury thinks he can replace Panarin with all the wingers the organization has that, at most, have middle six upside lol
You can build with middling wingers around three excellent centers and a diverse solid group of defensemen.

It’s just that as of today we need two brand spanking new top 2 dmen and a Zibanejad renaissance to have that core.

If we had a prime Yandle and Stralman pair added to our current D, and a 40 goal Mika, I’d say we can build without a superstar winger. Getting that is the hard part

Well I was even considering him - what really happened there? Was it a verbal assault or was it not giving him the playing time, insisting him play in the AHL and not communicating the org's larger plans for him? I'm not even clear on what happened there.

Apparently Drury called him a quitter for leaving Hartford to go back to the KHL which was Vitali's contractual right. Then in the bubble Drury browbeat him on the ice during a practice for "not working hard".

That's 16 I would take over Miller without much thought. You could make an argument for Larkin and Malkin, which would make Miller not a top 10 center in the Eastern Conference.

The overton window on what Rangers fans think a good player is has been affected by years of crap.
The ones in bold are all behind of Miller.

Hughes cant stay healthy for a season so i'm not putting him on any top 10 list.

The younger kids will all get better but aren't better than Miller yet. Eichel is finally having a career year, Miller has had those seasons the last 4 years.

Maybe you would take those players over Miller, but that doesn't mean they are better than Miller.

Miller is a league average 1C and Trocheck is an above average 2C. So what makes it hypothetically excellent would be Mika performing as a mid level 1C again
Yeah, assuming that level of play is maintained, you could march forward with that as your center group, but not with middling wingers. You would need significant depth at wing also, with probably one of them being an elite player.

You get away with middling wingers when you have Crosby and Malkin, and they didn't even take off until they got Guentzel and Kessel.

We just suck, and nobody wants to rebuild, so we're trying to talk the minimum talent bar down from the uprights.

As I mentioned before, Rangers fans do this all the time because of the starvation we've been put through.

Yeah we should definitely trust your take on this, after you just said out loud that you think JT Miller is more valuable than Jack Hughes.

Based on Drury's 24-25 and the smoke Brooks is blowing, it really looks like the "let's vibe our way to the Cup with punching and yelling" people are gonna get their team.

I think this is amazing actually. We're gonna accidentally get some lottery picks. Hire Messier too!

And yet three of the top teams in the league are led by Mark Scheifele, Roope Hintz, and PLD (a guy who we were told you can't win with).

And Miller is in your top 10, so Miller is more valuable.

You would take JT Miller over Jack Hughes.

You literally said that.

That's what top 10 versus not top 10 means.
I literally did NOT say that. I said I am not putting Jack Hughes on any top 10 list because he gets hurt all the time.

Dallas might win because they have extremely good depth and elite players at other positions, something I just mentioned to @Fitzy.

The Caps and Jets are 1st maybe 2nd round exits that people will pretend to be surprised about.

Drury should avoid giving Panarin a contract extension. While Brooks referred to him as part of the core at the end of the discussion, the Rangers need to move on. You can’t criticize the core group and then turn around and keep Panarin, Miller, and Trocheck, and still expect different results—or claim you're empowering the young players. Keeping all three clogs up the top six and leaves little room for meaningful change.

It's the same shit all over again. Those three players are in their 30's.
