Speculation: Roster Building thread: Part XIX (Thanks, Sam)

Vince missed the boat for months when he was inviting the players to blame Drury for all this crap before Christmas. I don't think Vince even realized what was happening with the players bc he constantly gave them an out to shit on Drury and escape responsibility. Then when Brooks went after the player Vince followed suit.

Why are people trying to have beat writers wars now??

Vince went on paternity leave for a month in the middle of all the turmoil. His only scoops come from the players themselves so no wonder he’d run cover for them when he got back

Brooks said JT Miller, Trocheck, Cuylle, Fox, Schneider and Igor are the Rangers core. The Rangers need to get away from the recyclable head coaches and they need a head coach to empower the younger players to help support the Rangers core group. Easier said than done. Larry mentioned someone like David Carle but Carle is in no rush to leave Denver.

Carle has three toddlers under the age of 5. EF said Carle is not going to a situation where he can't win.

EF and Kyle mentioned the de Haan stuff on the pod this morning.

Drury has terrible communication skills.

Isn’t it more on Laviolette to communicate to players what their role is?

If you took every team's six best players, that group has to be near the bottom of the league.

Glad they think that's the "core" and it just needs "support."

It needs a new core.

Time stamp on the de Haan stuff?

Yes. On the day to day.

But when there is turmoil permeating the room it is incumbent upon the general manager to go in there and address it head-on. As Brooks mentioned, Drury should have gone in there and say (paraphrasing), "If you don't want to be here let me know. We'll find a place for you to go." Or just go in to the room and let the players air out any grievances and just talk and try to sort it out. Apparently that didn't happen. It was almost like Drury just forms the roster and gives it to the coach and says, "It's all yours. My work is done."

Drury seems pretty hands-off unless it's browbeating a 19 year old prospect in front of everyone.

It reads more like "Players that didn't make us want to vomit all year"

Which is a different category than core.

But yes you remove Panarin and NYR have a low-talent roster.

The big contract guys are basically cooked. Torts squeezes everything out of players for a few years (at which point players tire of him). I say bring him in for those two years, pray for the best (we're not bad enough to be a lottery team), then let them all go and tear it down with a new coach. Need a Coach-Q type (but I'm increasingly concerned about whether Q has been away from the game too long to be effective again).

We need hard work and tenacity. I can live with a lack of talent or "not being good enough." The lack of effort and apathy are unforgivable and what make this team unwatchable.

Interesting take from Elliotte Friedman. If your top 4 players are happy, and your bottom 4 players are happy, then the middle falls into place. It's pretty apparent that's not what's going in with the Rangers this season.

I don't want to be the first team to give him another chance after he turned the other way to everything that happened in Chicago. It's a PR nightmare everywhere but especially here.

Which is going to happen. Drury allegedly does not like Panarin so the moment he can get rid of him, he will.

And when it happens this team will be in the basement.

Drury thinks he can replace Panarin with all the wingers the organization has that, at most, have middle six upside lol

Yup.

Country club of Kreider/Mika/Panarin can GTFO.

It might fly in Texas but certainly not in NY. No one wants to be the first; you're 100% right. But at this point I think his unemployment has also become a hockey decision. He hasn't coached at any level in, what, five years?

You have a top 10 center (if he plays his proper position), top 10 defenseman (who should be much better but had an off season like 90% of the team), top 3 goalie in that core.

Yea I think a lot of teams would be pretty excited to have that in there core of 6.

You absolutely do not have that. Stop being ridiculous.
It’s at best a generous appraisal of the situation.

Then one realizes the person who said it also believes the team will be back to being a cup contender next year as long as they get rid of Panarin, Mika and Kreider this summer

And at that point it’s clear, they just live in fantasy land lol

Guy has over 350 points over the last 4 years. Yea, hate to tell you, but he's a top 10 center.
McDavid
Draisaitl
MacKinnon
Barkov
Hughes
Point
Matthews
Crosby
Eichel
Kopitar
Aho
Thompson
Thomas
Suzuki
Celebrini
Stutzle

That's 16 I would take over Miller without much thought. You could make an argument for Larkin and Malkin, which would make Miller not a top 10 center in the Eastern Conference.

The overton window on what Rangers fans think a good player is has been affected by years of crap.
