Speculation: Roster Building thread: Part XIX (Thanks, Sam)

Panarin is an interesting case. 1 year left, NMC. I have my criticism but Im ok with riding out the contract with him. He does all the shit that makes us want to pull our hair out (weak backhanders in dangerous areas, not backchecking, etc.) but he does produce. He has played solid, but not spectacular hockey down the stretch here. He doesnt speak to the media much but he has had a few interesting comments this year. Back in December he talked about players having to stop feeling sorry for themselves, or something to that effect. I wonder who that was directed at. I can think of a couple examples.

Now talking about the young guys, he's 100% right. They play with spunk and need to play more. But the comments are interestingly timed. He didnt make these comments when Kakko and Laf and Chytil were breaking into the league lol. I think he enjoys playing with Othmann, who has shown to be pretty fearless in front of the net and a good passer. And Perreault is a guy who could learn a ton from Panarin. Breadman seems to be buttering up(hehe) management and the fans a little. I'm sure he doesn't want to leave. What does an extension look like? Does he want a raise and to keep his NMC? I dont feel great about that. How about you get us into the playoffs and redeem yourself for past failures Artemi, then we can talk extension. It's been a shit year but the Metro is ass and maybe this will finally be the year Igor and Panarin both get hot at the same time and carry us.
Yeah, if he plays out his contract here that’s fine. But if they can get significant assets for him that’s also fine. I also wouldn’t mind if they re sign him, depending on the contract of course. He’s not a player I think we NEED to rid ourselves of. Yeah he’s a shadow of himself in the playoffs, but he produces in those 82 games you need to do well in to get there.

I disagree. The video clearly shows Laf looking in Gabe’s direction. He was ready for the pass. It was deflected behind him, and he was in motion toward the goal. Yes, he fell down reaching back, and I won’t argue he shouldn’t have gotten it anyway, wasn’t impossible, but it was clearly tipped and if not it was a gimme. I guess it’s not a big deal, they certainly will mesh better as they gain familiarity.
But my main takeaway is that anyone who plays with Gabe is going to get chances. If Laf and Brodz alone buried sweet setups the kid would have debuted with 3 assists. Gabe getting to play with NHL talent to take advantage of what he does should be VERY interesting.

Gabe was dangerous with the puck in his debut. more dangerous than many of our prospects who have come before him. Im bullish on him. Im also bullish on Othmann. the points havent been there, but anyone who has been watching knows he's been unlucky. Also punched Boldy in the face and drew a penalty on that netfornt battle. More of that please for the love of God.

This is where Im at. Its more of a priority to be rid of Kreider and (somehow) Mika than it is Panarin. Panarin is still going to end up with around 90 points in his worst season as a Ranger. But if someone offers us a haul and Bread is willing to waive, I take the deal. As I said, he's got a shot at redemption right now.

I’d welcome back Panarin after next year. Need to stay reasonably short term but he’s still a terrific player. I also think he learned a lot the past year or so and has come out a better player mentally. If he’s on a line with two high motor guys he’ll be very valuable into the foreseeable future.

Just because Panarin doesn't talk much doesn't mean what he has to say when he does is particularly profound.

Hey. You are entitled to your opinion, but the GM is where the buck stops, no? If he was in the locker room every day interfering, I’d agree with you but dressing down Kravtsov ONCE is hardly outside his perview. Maybe he was trying to impress upon Kravtsov (and the room) that it was NOT okay to quit. IMO that IS helping. I mean do you know what was actually said? I don’t. If you can tell me what was so horrendous that was said you might change my mind. I’m open to that, but nothing I’ve read indicates anything untoward. I have no problem with a GM addressing something like this. He is the boss, and he’s not in the room everyday, like a coach would be, so it’s better that Krav would resent the GM (if anyone) than the coach, AND it sends a message from the top to the team. Quitting on your teammates is about the most grievous sin a player can commit IMO. Which is why I have zero sympathy for any NYR who did so or is doing so.
Again, I think the whole “he’s too mean” thing is f***ing ridiculous, but I have no need or desire to convince you to agree with me. We are allowed to have our separate views on it, buddy.
I don't recall: were any of the players upset over the Drury/Kravtsov "run in". Did I miss where his teammates took exception and decided to dog it or asked to be traded because the GM criticized a player?

As it turns out Drury was right. Kravtsov wasn't someone worth being concerned about and got the same analysis in Vancouver. Entitled bust.

"Dhaliwal added that he has a hard time believing that the Vancouver Canucks would bring Vitali Kravtsov back as he's not even a point-per-game player in the KHL and likely couldn't crack the team's bottom-six next season."

"I do get asked a lot about Vitali Kravtsov, he's wrapping up the season in Russia. I think he's still property of the Canucks. I checked in with Dan Milstein earlier this week, he said no talks with the Canucks. Look, this guys not even a point-per guy in Russia, he's not a top-six player in the NHL. But he's one of those guys that when you're not top-six in the NHL, can you find a role in the bottom-six, not a bottom-six guy either," Dhaliwal said.

He went on to add, "Here's the deal. When you're drafted high and you're an offensive player and you can't make it in the top-six, you better change your game and find a role in the bottom-six and if you can't you're in trouble. I find it hard to believe the Canucks would have interest in that guy."

PSA PSA:

I have made a decision on what name has succeeded Kravtsov420. It was a decision that took some very long pondering. After Kravtsov's death, I thought, maybe I'll be Kakko420...but then he was tragically claimed in a sea incident with an octupus. So then I thought, maybe I'll go for Lafreniere420. And just when I was about to do it, it looked like he bit the dust too. He's on life support right now.

Then it hit me. I must become who I was always meant to be.

I am the Mothmann...78.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk. Love you all.

PS. I really really hope I did not jinx this kid.

Dhaliwal has probably never seen a KHL game in his life, nor looked at a stat sheet apparently. "Not even a point per game player in the KHL" is a hilarious statement. 3 players in the entire KHL were a point per game this season, compared to 40 in the NHL. The KHL is a far lower scoring league. Kravtsov finished 6th in the league in points this season and broke Traktor's records for both goals in a single season & all time goals.

Will Vitali be looking to sign an NHL contract this summer? On a related note, the kid from that movie Anora reminds me of him.

Blame your 401(k)s on the Rangers. Horror season continues....

Why is everyone involved with Vancouver such a clown

How long before Gabe94 makes an appearance?

And… he’s in the KHL after failed stints for two NHL teams whose rosters he couldn’t make.

If he were impressing anyone he’d be here not there.

Edited to add:

Hrm, when I look at Kravtsov's stats and I'm not cherry picking one year (where he still wasn't at a point per game pace despite being some phenomenal overlooked talent) and I see a guy that's played 222 KHL games with 102 points.

If my admittedly fuzzy math is right, that's less than HALF a point per game. I still wish him the best but at age 25 and not in the NHL for a couple of years and nobody is talking to him about a contract and I think that horse has left the barn so to speak.

When a guy is ready for a pass he doesn’t end up on his rear. He was caught off guard and over reacted. When GP made the pass Laf was turned away. It’s like when a goalie isn’t sharp. A deflection high beats him. But when the goalie’s sharp he’s a step ahead and ready. Hopefully next time Laf is ready for the pass.
You keep dumping this on Laf. As one of his biggest critics, this one wasn't on Laf. The puck doesn't come to him in a position to shoot it, and it's not because "Laf wasn't ready and turned away."

Obviously dumping on Laf has been the move this year, but you’d have to be pretty simple to not see that the pass getting tipped behind him by the defender is what caught him off balance

It’s just funny that he fell on his ass.

Gabe should have shot the puck though. He was in a great position to score. Our players never end up in that spot

Dylan Holloway. 26 goals. 37 assists. 73 points. I remember reading an article at The Athletic by Jeremy Rutherford at the beginning of the season. He spoke to an NHL scout who compared Holloway to Blake Coleman. I like Coleman. Really top notch role player. He was good with Jersey and was a key player for TB in their two Cup victories. Holloway has taken off his season. He suffered a very serious wrist injury at Wisconsin and there was a long recovery period. He couldn’t take face-offs. Two surgeries on the wrist.

Holloway has played most of his minutes with Brayden Schenn and Jordan Kyrou.

Jake Neighbours. 21 goals. 23 assists. 44 points. He had 27 goals last season. Neighbours has played most of his minutes with Robert Thomas and Pavel Buchnevich.

How do the Rangers get Will Cuylle and Brennan Othmann to be the Rangers version of Holloway and Neighbours?

Holloway has 6 PPG and 13 PPP.

Cuylle has 2 PPG and 3 PPP. Cuylle has 2 SHG and 3 SHP. 18 goals and 39 points. Cuylle has played nearly 300 minutes with Zibanejad. Cuylle played major minutes with Chytil and Kakko. Both of them were traded. The Rangers give Cuylle better line mates and those numbers should improve.

The problem is we have 2 “good linemates” for young players and like 5 young players who need good linemates
