Speculation: Roster Building thread: Part XIX (Thanks, Sam)

Brooks is such a flip flopper. Last week, Brooks was complaining about how the Rangers play and their stubbornness. They don't play north and south. East and west doesn't work. The Rangers refuse to forecheck. They refuse to get the puck in deep. The Rangers don't play the right way. I am sure Panarin is one of the main culprits or THE main culprit.

This week, Brooks wants the Rangers to extend Panarin this summer. Next season, Brooks will start complaining about the same things all over again. The Rangers win a few games. Keep everyone. The Rangers lose a few games. Get rid of everyone.
He's just stoked on the potentially trouble causing Bread quote.

Because it's both.

And I'm not arguing either way on Panarin, but we, and really, the team need to stop seeing skill and checking as one or the other.

They go hand in hand when you play the right way.

No other GM in the league comes down to a dressing room to tune up players at the start of a season, none. Walking into a dressingroom and doing that undermines development and it also undermines the coach. Who's gonna respect the coach when they know at any time the GM is gonna bust through and over rule him. It absolutely never happened on any team I was on, it absolutely should not be happening at the Ahl level.
How do you know this? How do you know every single thing that has or hasn’t happened in every other organization? We don’t even know that what you are saying is how it happened… IN HARTFORD BTW, NOT NY. You want to know something else? I DON’T GIVE A f***. He gave Kravtsov a hard time for quitting on his teammates? GOOD. Because he did. TWICE. Even if he was allowed to quit contractually the first time he still f***ing quit. BEFORE he got called out on it, obviously.
And as I said, that was in Hartford, not NY, I’m FINE with it. Gee, Chytil had no problems with Drury in Hartford. Wonder why? Because he’s not a whiny quitter. There’s a reason Krav bombed out in Vancouver too, and if you think it’s Drury, I think you’ve lost it. Hahahaha.
As I said, you think he’s a shitty GM because you don’t like his trades, signings, etc, I respect that, agreed or not. But this stuff about being too mean is just ridiculous.

But I also get a lot more correct.
Go back 5+ yrs, I said trade Buch while his value is greatest maximizing his return. No, win now crowd said. We self rented. In the end we got bupkis b'c all that was left of his term was sliver of rfa rights.

Trouba was checked out because Drury told him he stinks as a player and kept harassing him to waive his no trade clause so he could be shipped away from his wife and baby, after watching what he did to his buddy who played with a broken ankle and broken jaw, still fought for his teammates, and had one of the best playoffs of all the Rangers last year. Then Drury puts out that no one on the Rangers is safe and specifically mentioned the longest tenured Ranger as being on the trade block. Drury must be a genius since I have never seen another NHL GM so magnificently proficient at motivating his players. This just proves what a country club team they are, they just don’t know how to respond to such genius.
You could have stopped at “Trouba was checked out.” It doesn’t matter what someone said about him or if someone wanted to trade him. HE checked out. HIS decision. You not liking the GM doesn’t mean the players aren’t responsible for the things they do. And yeah, pouting and giving up because your thought your boss was a dick proves the country club attitude of some of these guys.

He had a lot of albatross contracts to deal with coming in. I'm not saying he's a good GM but he was certainly dealt a limited option hand when Dolan had his hissy fit and fired Davidson and Gorton.
What albatross contracts? I can’t think of any other than Trouba. Mika and Buch were some of the best assets in the league and he had a million prospects to do anything he wanted with. Panarin Fox Igor ready to go. Drury inherited about as good of a situation as possible for a new GM

If I could resign Panarin with no trade protections, I would do it 😈

Laf’s season can be summed up with one play…

When a guy is ready for a pass he doesn’t end up on his rear. He was caught off guard and over reacted. When GP made the pass Laf was turned away. It’s like when a goalie isn’t sharp. A deflection high beats him. But when the goalie’s sharp he’s a step ahead and ready. Hopefully next time Laf is ready for the pass.

NO
tro is lateral and KAM is better asset

disagree w/most of this
zib not a great pivot
and you are among many who dis contributions from solid contributors like Brodz + Rempe that are not glamor name guys but are delivering and deserve mo mins

better to sign mid 20s KAM to 8 yrs 5.5, get great cap value going forward, and just get correct partner for him to have chem w/
rossi = ok for what he is, but subsized and not enuf of a dynamo to warrant surrendering a key asset
I agree with all of this except for KAM. He’s not focused as it is. Giving him eight years would be a disaster. I think what he needs is a trade to somewhere a little less Broadway. Minnesota would be a good destination actually. But I don’t see him figuring it out in NYC. Feel similarly with regard to Lafreniere. Though he at least was focused last year so possibly he can bounce back.

Brooks did the same thing with Ryan Lindgren. One week Lindgren and Fox are 2nd pair D. They are too small. The Rangers need to get bigger and tougher everywhere. The following week the Rangers should consider keeping Lindgren because he is a good guy and plays hard. He is also close to Adam and that's important. Lindgren would be great on the third pair. It can't be both. All of these guys are good guys. They are hockey players. It's hard to find a bad person playing in the NHL.

Panarin would chafe playing under a tough demanding coach. Panarin likes to freelance. Tortorella in Columbus was six years ago. The Rangers need to start playing like the other better teams play. The Rangers are a terrible defensive team. The Rangers can't have each line playing a separate style.

The NHL and NHLPA have started CBA talks. The NHL wants to change LTIR and the playoff cap issues. A player miraculously is ready to play when the playoffs start after spending three months on LTIR.

Othmann looks much better than when he first came up. Of course he is with better players. Funny how that works.

But again he, by himself, is looking faster and better each game.

I'm sure Laviolette will take credit for that where he moved him up the lineup at the right time, when in actuality it was way late and he should have been given the Perrault treatment.

It wasn’t a seamless debut; Perreault accidentally deflected a Brock Faber shot past Igor Shesterkin for a Wild goal. But, all in all, it was a good one, especially since the Rangers picked up two much-needed points in the wild-card race. One NHL scout who watched the game remarked that Perreault, who had three shots in 13:38 of ice time, makes offensive plays you can’t teach. The 19-year-old’s new teammates agreed.

“That caliber of player, there’s not that many of them,” linemate Lafrenière said.

Gabe had a good debut. He didn't look too small or too slow on the ice. He lined up next to Matt Boldy and you could see them talking to each other. BC boys. Gabe met up with Brock Faber on one play and they were talking. After the first period, Gabe was sitting next to Othmann and they talking. Gabe said I am all right.

Does Gabe speak french? He could be a good complement to Lafreniere having another francophone on the Rangers. Gabe is an American francophone.

Because it's not his job, it's the coaches job. Has nothing to do with being mean or whatever. You're dealing with 18 year old kids in a different country, some who can't speak the language, you can't expect them to be on top of things right away, tough love is fine, outright idiotic anger is the problem. I've had tons of mean coaches that were trying to help, I have no problem with that, but it's not the GM's job to be in the dressing room at the start of a season belittling foreign players in front of the team. If he has a problem with the player you take him to your office and deal with him face to face. The coach can do the day to day discipline.

agree to the extent he is not always at ease, which affects his game
that said, he has talent and intangibles [size, reach, decent + -> good skating]
and he is worth keeping while we figure out which partner is best fit

As a mid 20s asset with experience, he is worth paying longer/max-ish deal to drive down his annual salary. Whether we keep or trade, his value is upped by the lower salary.

not 111% clear cut, but my guess is we get good offers not but better ones if we develop him further

Also, a fallback position is to use him as a W if -- AGAIN I SAID IF -- inexplicably we somehow wind up w/D surplus. I believe we converted him, and that into account, we should recognize his progress favorably compared to a lifelong backliner.

While I am optimistic about Fortescue etc, I would keep KAM unless it is part of a larger equation which gets us a signif add.

I would rather have KAM at 5.75ish x 8ish as opposed to Gavrikov costing top $$ as ufa and then adding to that to have no nmc, reasonable ntcs, so like 9-ish x 4. KAM is younger and has more upside compared to the more polished Gav. But if LA was concerned about not being able to afford Gav and him exiting for no return, I would do KAM for GAV but ONLY IF it was part of a larger package getting us Byfield +

Share the thought but doubt CHI is on the same page

They need a speed W for him, pref 2, and the play here is Berard.
maybe Berard + SEA 2025 3rd + NYR 2026 3rd
for
return of NYR 2025 4th, DAL 2025 2nd and NYI 2026 2nd

something like that
I like the idea of uniting Bedard and Berard. I’d like to also get Evan Bouchard to Chicago and convert him to wing for that line.

Sam Rosen gonna kick my ass all the way up Broadway.

Hey. You are entitled to your opinion, but the GM is where the buck stops, no? If he was in the locker room every day interfering, I’d agree with you but dressing down Kravtsov ONCE is hardly outside his perview. Maybe he was trying to impress upon Kravtsov (and the room) that it was NOT okay to quit. IMO that IS helping. I mean do you know what was actually said? I don’t. If you can tell me what was so horrendous that was said you might change my mind. I’m open to that, but nothing I’ve read indicates anything untoward. I have no problem with a GM addressing something like this. He is the boss, and he’s not in the room everyday, like a coach would be, so it’s better that Krav would resent the GM (if anyone) than the coach, AND it sends a message from the top to the team. Quitting on your teammates is about the most grievous sin a player can commit IMO. Which is why I have zero sympathy for any NYR who did so or is doing so.
Again, I think the whole “he’s too mean” thing is f***ing ridiculous, but I have no need or desire to convince you to agree with me. We are allowed to have our separate views on it, buddy.

Panarin is an interesting case. 1 year left, NMC. I have my criticism but Im ok with riding out the contract with him. He does all the shit that makes us want to pull our hair out (weak backhanders in dangerous areas, not backchecking, etc.) but he does produce. He has played solid, but not spectacular hockey down the stretch here. He doesnt speak to the media much but he has had a few interesting comments this year. Back in December he talked about players having to stop feeling sorry for themselves, or something to that effect. I wonder who that was directed at. I can think of a couple examples.

Now talking about the young guys, he's 100% right. They play with spunk and need to play more. But the comments are interestingly timed. He didnt make these comments when Kakko and Laf and Chytil were breaking into the league lol. I think he enjoys playing with Othmann, who has shown to be pretty fearless in front of the net and a good passer. And Perreault is a guy who could learn a ton from Panarin. Breadman seems to be buttering up(hehe) management and the fans a little. I'm sure he doesn't want to leave. What does an extension look like? Does he want a raise and to keep his NMC? I dont feel great about that. How about you get us into the playoffs and redeem yourself for past failures Artemi, then we can talk extension. It's been a shit year but the Metro is ass and maybe this will finally be the year Igor and Panarin both get hot at the same time and carry us.

I liked his debut. If this team is serious about getting to playoffs they'll take Mika and Kreider off pp1 and replace them with Perrault and Lafreniere/Othmann, pp1 is struggling and those two can add some movement to the pp.

PP1 should be Panarin Fox JT Perreault and Cuylle/Othmann netfront. Laviolette commitment to these bums Mika, kreider and trocheck to figure it out on the power play is the main reason why they'll all be golfing in 2 weeks if we cant overtake the Habs.

I disagree. The video clearly shows Laf looking in Gabe’s direction. He was ready for the pass. It was deflected behind him, and he was in motion toward the goal. Yes, he fell down reaching back, and I won’t argue he shouldn’t have gotten it anyway, wasn’t impossible, but it was clearly tipped and if not it was a gimme. I guess it’s not a big deal, they certainly will mesh better as they gain familiarity.
But my main takeaway is that anyone who plays with Gabe is going to get chances. If Laf and Brodz alone buried sweet setups the kid would have debuted with 3 assists. Gabe getting to play with NHL talent to take advantage of what he does should be VERY interesting.
