Speculation: Roster Building thread: Part XIX (Thanks, Sam)

I am surprised to see so many fans wanting him in the lineup this year.
I have seen this story play out many times.
Plays 5-6 minutes a game with Brodz or Carrick (no offense to either) and certainly zero pp time.
and in a close game good luck if he even sees the ice in the third period. I am sure Lavi is gonna love his 165-170 pound frame.

He's going to play a few games to burn a year off his contract. I'll bet that's part of why he signed.

What are people expecting from him? Honestly.

I’m hoping to be surprised by a prospect for once… In good way but I’m not expecting much
Work hard, get a feel for the game. Next to nothing other than brief flashes. Just let him get a taste of the speed and physicality to motivate him for the summer.

No, it has no bearing on any of that. He will be UFA in 2032. Nothing about this contract will change that. It's pretty common for players who aren't drafted in the top 5 to get less than max, but typically the really high-profile prospects still get the max. I would have expected Gabe to get the max considering he's out #1 prospect.
My question was regarding the burning of year of ELC (which someone answered) but thanks for this other piece of info.

Why not Zibanejad's line (as long as it's Kreider who's pushed down to 4th)?
They ain't getting pushed down. And playing with them, which is what it looks like he will do is gonna be tough. Those guys have been bad all year.

What are people expecting from him? Honestly.

8 games? Maybe 4 points. At most. Probably get 10 minutes of icetime. He needs to "learn the game". Haha

Perreault is a LW

If he is immediately placed on RW, let alone with those 2 clown shows, then I am distraught

Clayton Keller type infused into the NYR lineup ASAP might = 1st RD ticket against WSH & his buddy Ryan Leonard which would then = a story for NHL journalists which would then = NHL profit margins which would then = funds going directly into Gary Bettman's pockets.

Simple

He is a RW.

Lines from their last 2 games, and when watching the games GP was on the left side. So maybe he did play some RW other times, but he seems like a more natural LW to me

Vince even calls him a "natural LW" when projecting him starting off being placed on the right side

God forbid we move Kreider to the damn right side. He has just been all too productive to move off of LW, right? Absolute idiocy

I hope Gabe is placed on the top PP unit, not expecting it. Would like to see him and Miller out there to play on the right side and ent front and be able to rotate which should open up some different looks.

Starting now and going into next year maybe:

Laf-Miller-Cuylle/Perreault
Panarin-Tro-Cuylle/Perreault
Who cares
Berard-Carrick-Brod
Rempe/Ed

Miller-Fox
Who cares
Soucy/Vaak-Borgen
I had something similar last night.

10 - 8 - 13
50 - 16 - Perreault
20 - 93 - 22
65 - 29 - 78

That 4th line is actually more of a 3rd line and a bit of a scoring threat. Just balance the minutes a little bit, and I don't think it's a disservice to the kids. You could even swap Carrick and Brodz if the kids are playing well and the BFF's are not. Next season, Rempe and Eds are back on the 4th line and we'll see what holes are created for Otter, and Beebs. We should NOT be trading either of them.

79-23
For the love of all things hockey, can we PLEASE see this for at least half a season? Miller's mistakes are greatly mitigated when the puck is going in the right direction, and it just WORKED. I'm not sure making Key the focal point of a 2nd pair and finding him "his own Lindgren" is the right tactic.

Those two are the only D on the roster that are undeniably better than a "great 3rd pair guy."

I love Schneider, but he hasn't taken that jump from "liking the potential" to "liking the current execution on the ice." Great 3rd pair guy still. Borgen was a pretty good add even though we got terrible trade value. Great 3rd pair guy. I don't mind him as a placeholder on the 2nd pair for if/when Schneids takes that next step.

Vaaks is a great 6/7. Jones still has intriguing talent. They can get scratched for each other and bring different "looks," no prob there.

As for Soucy, I have no idea what to make of him. He could be the rug that ties the room together as a decent 2nd pair guy, or he could be our 3rd 6/7 and wildly overpaid for the role. I can see Drury's vision for his remade D corps, but a lot rides on Soucy. The whole thing has a decent chance of going horribly wrong.
