Speculation: Roster Building thread: Part XIX (Thanks, Sam)

Hard to be excited when you know he won't be in the top 6. Him and cuylle should be the RW on either Miller or Trochecks line. Either or. Doesn't matter. Anything else is a waste of time and an ELC years.
Why not Zibanejad's line (as long as it's Kreider who's pushed down to 4th)?

Burning a year but not getting a max contract. He's not even getting max salary, if those numbers are correct. For cap purposes, it's better if he doesn't have the big performance bonuses, especially if he does well.
I wonder if that means he can get out of NY quicker when things go south?

The Rangers really need to let a coach cook, and allow him to incorporate his vision. I agree with people who have said it doesn't feel like they're on the same page.

I understand that Quinn didn't work out and now there's that fear, but the retreads who just babysit aren't getting us anywhere either.
They didn't let Quinn cook either. They immediately gave him Panarin and Mika hit 41 goals in 57 games. At that point it's kowtow to your best players and we see how that worked out.

It just means he's up for a new contract sooner. I suppose you can say he's an RFA sooner and play hardball but that's about it.

If we burn a year and Gabe ends up with a very big contract 1 year sooner, then we should pat scouting, coaching, and development on the back, because that's going to be a damn good problem to have.

RFA without arbitration status means the player has very little rights in contract negotiations. As already stated signing for 2024-2025 season to kick off his ELC (instead of 2025-2026) will not affect when he becomes arbitration eligible nor when he becomes UFA

I think that's true.

Not to absolve Quinn, because I don't think he had any idea what he wanted his team to be, but bringing in Panarin when they did became "our identity is now whatever makes this guy comfortable."

I've mentioned before that Panarin would be an excellent asset to a team that knows what it wants to be, but he wasn't the guy to build a vision around.

Which, you know, kinda just makes sense. 99% of players can't play like him.

No, it has no bearing on any of that. He will be UFA in 2032. Nothing about this contract will change that. It's pretty common for players who aren't drafted in the top 5 to get less than max, but typically the really high-profile prospects still get the max. I would have expected Gabe to get the max considering he's out #1 prospect.

The genesis was Gorton + Quinn, couple Boston guys, wanted to make Boston South. Run a 2-1-2 heavy forecheck point shot oriented offense, and they ran it pre-Panarin that first year.

Perreault with Zibanejad and Kreider. Gabe is the playmaking RW needed to unlock those two.

Finding stability at RW would surely help their cause, with Drury openly admitting his plan to “continue to look and explore and try to find someone that could become a good fit for them.” Zibanejad addressed the dilemma, as well, expressing his belief that he and Kreider would benefit from “a guy who’s more of a passer.”

I didn't mention arbitration. Players hold the cards whether GM's want to admit it or not. It means less, but I wouldn't say it means very little. An unhappy player finds a way off that team and can play hard ball.

I am surprised to see so many fans wanting him in the lineup this year.
I have seen this story play out many times.
Plays 5-6 minutes a game with Brodz or Carrick (no offense to either) and certainly zero pp time.
and in a close game good luck if he even sees the ice in the third period. I am sure Lavi is gonna love his 165-170 pound frame.

We don't need Othmann on the 4th line. Kreider probably gets traded. Add in Rempe and Edstrom.
This is why I want to wait until Kreider is gone. Any extra young kid coming up now is gonna just get pushed to the 4th line. Zero pp time. No ice time in third period. No way they are gonna get pushed up above Kreider or 93 in a playoff "push"

This season is a wash. The pertinent question for right now is will it make Perreault better, not the Rangers
True but honestly do you think that will happen if GP comes in tomorrow or even saturday? I wish that would be the case but it wont be
