I’m no Kakko fan. I’m happy to take a positive return for him. I’d-much prefer Cozens the player. He’s better so the reasoning for Buffalo would be to dump the contract. I’m just saying adding a 7+ million dollar long term deal to another winger when the defense is in shambles is a potential negative value contract. Maybe with some other moving parts? I know they liked him in his draft year. Just doesn’t seem like a fit to me.
Well if there is a chance that a 6.5m winger is leaving and laffy can finally move to lw full time then maybe it works? I really don't know the move right now and I'm not suggesting that cozens and kakko is a thing. Just throwing it out there as an idea for both teams. Finding these kind of deals is hard, especially with former high picks, so the easiest thing to do is swap struggling high picks for one another. Makes sense in ways

Im really dying for a 1990s NHL blockbuster trade involving the Rangers. I think they and the league need it. The guys you mentioned would be my untouchables, but anyone else I'd be extremely willing to move in a multiple players in and out type move. There are a lot of teams around the league that need major shakeups. The Rangers need to add size and physicality and speed to their lineup on defense especially. But I trust the younger players if their roles are increased. Drury needs to stop being a coward because he can turn it around with some agressive trades.
You identify who to move out but who's actual available that addresses what you want? You draft those kind of players with high picks, yet we have kakko

IDK there are a lot of teams out there that have roster players to move and could use a shakeup. Buffalo, Nashville. And there are other teams that might be on the outside looking in who want to deal. The league is very wide open. It's still early, but not that early. Trouba and Fowler have both moved so there at least there's some appetite to trade.

Who in Nashville are you bringing here to help things? Seriously?

Who from Buffalo? People keep saying Byram and it shows that they haven't watch much of Byram.

Connor Clifton? @Barnaby mentioned finding 2014 Kevin Klein, and that's pretty close. Hardnosed guy who can move better than any other defender we have. It would be a start.

Drury is much more of the problem than the solution. It would take a completely established GM with zero NYR ties to do what truly needs to be done.

He traded lots of draft capital for garbage rentals. His conract extensions and FA signings stink. The Igor.contract is the nail in the coffin for me. Shows how out of touch he truly is, and that he will never be the GM to go into rebuild mode.

There were at least elements of the dark ages teams that were likeable.......

Still had legends like Leetch, Graves, Richter, and Messier on the team.

The FLY line

Czechmates

The end of the Great one's career

A few years of Theo Fleury nearly leading the league in scoring before falling off the wagon sadly.

Enforcers and pests who actually had a little skill like Harvey, Barnaby, Simon, and McCarthy

This current team really has nothing to root for outside of Cuylle, Berard, and Mancini. Milquetoast on and off the ice. Playing like a bunch of Tom Poti's!

I'm not sure the pr department can spin kakko for Clifton. Trouba they could for the cap relief. Connor Clifton is the piece this team needs?

Just give me the magic beans and draft picks at that point

The current team is one of the least likeable ranger teams in decades.

Like I said, its a start. They need to improve the defense in the short term. Hopefully Vaakanainen can get in after Christmas. Lindgren needs to go whenever he's ready. The pocket pick by Kyrou on Lindy was emasculating. Once Othmann is ready, you move Smith retained to a contender. Keep rewarding the kids who have positive habits like Chytil, Berard, Cuylle, Edstrom and that will rub off. Drury has a lot of work to do. If he can't, he will get canned at some point. But There is a path out of this. A Kreider or Trocheck trade should be explored because the Rangers can add multiple pieces in return and take on salary if needed. There is no pressing need to sign anyone in house this summer.

As I said elsewhere, there is no part of me that believes any defenseman with legit NHL experience makes that play if his teammates are actually communicating to him. He knew kyrou was there but not how close. What was kreider yelling? Where the hell was his d partner to offer an outlet? Lindgren has literally back passed to Igor in those spots, there no reasons he did that other than no one was communicating and kreider was the closest player to him.

All the more reason to trade both guys sooner than later.

Agreed thats the toughest part for me. This core is full of totally unlikeable guys. They truly are hard to root for. And theyre not entertaining one bit.

I know some here hated tony deangelo but god damn during those rough years he was fun to watch. Always mixing it up, always being an asshole, always getting under the other teams skin. Same for brendan lemieux in his short stint here. We need entertaining players. The product on the ice is trash

January 1 Lineup

Lafreniere-Chytil-Cuylle
Panarin-Trocheck-Berard
Edstrom-Carrick-Othmann
Kreider-Mika-Rempe

Miller-Fox
Vaakanainen-Schneider
Jones-Clifton

Drury has a chance to do something REALLY funny, which is trade Fox and Igor before their NMCs kick in.

Who's with me.

Why not?

Thats a hot take about Drury's deadline deals.
There are a lot of very valid criticisms about Drury as GM. That would be the lowest on my list.

Copp+Vatrano+Motte for A very high conditional 1st and change, was a great pickup. It gave our team depth, and they all put up big plays in the playoffs.
Tarasenko and Mikkola were another great move, and, we still had a first round pick that year. (please note, I ignore the kane move which I hated at the time, and hate even more now, as something Dolan pushed on him not a move drury wanted to make)
Roslovic and Wennberg were solid depth moves, and were good pickups without sacrificing a first.

Making splashes while still keeping 2/3 first round picks, AND going to the ECF 2x in 3 years with the pickups all contributing in the playoffs.

Add size, physicality, and speed?

Who’s trading that to us for small, slow, and weak?

In seriousness, I wouldn’t mind a big shake up trade, but those Bern style trades don’t seem to happen these days for a variety of reasons. Even less likely in season.

Obviously there’s a major shift over the last year. It sounds like they potentially have profound issues.

To say they’ve had years and years of rotten culture dating back 8 years or so is a bit much. They’ve had quite a bit of success in recent years for a team that’s been rotten.
I’m not saying it was full rot, but that started back then for sure. Just grew bigger and bigger each year until you get inmates running the asylum. It wasn’t squashed then and I think it grew systemically where the core had more and more leverage each year without accountability

I don’t know enough about Clifton to know if that’s a good move, but I def don’t see a Kakko trade being a PR issue. Anyone who follows closely like us and was a big enough supporter when he was picked have long since moved on except a rare few.

If we want to really maximize value we have a 2 year reset. 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 season we sell at the TDL. At the TDL teams have max available cap space + give up the most assets.

To me this means

1) this TDL trade lindgren and smith at 50% retained
2) July 2025 off-season hockey trade of kandre. Id move fox too if it got us macavoy + from boston
3) 2026 TDL move kreider and panarin at 50% retained
4) bully mika to waiving his NMC

Prospects who are close to NHL ready should be the priority.

Then 2026-2027 start competing again

Laff-Eichel-Perreault
Cuylle-Chytil-Kaprisov
Othmann-Trocheck-Berard
Edstrom-Roobroeck-Sykora
Rempe

Petersson-Macavoy

Imo the soft, “we’re classier than every other team” culture has been around 8 years back. We have a bunch of guys who are afraid to hit, afraid to take a run at someone, afraid to ruffle feathers, afraid of what may happen if a guy on another team doesnt wanna play golf with them

The problem is the owner would have to sign off on a rebuild. He didn’t just sign all these contracts to burn it all down for the next 5 years.

Agreed on the likability of this team. I liked them, but didn’t love them. This is def starting to feel like early 2000’s pre-Jagr Rangers.

Trade bait:

Kreider
Kakko

Smith
Zibanejad- doubt it

Those are my lines going into the TD/offseason and the roster spots that need to be filled. Ideally Perreault lives up to the billing and is the first line wing going forward. Could also see Panarin and Trocheck as trade bait but I’m skeptical Panarin would waive.
