It's a real shame how misused Kakko has been since he got here by multiple coaches. The guy is lights out defensively. He should have been developed as a shutdown offensive player (and with a potential move to center this could be even more valuable) as well as a leading penalty killer.

I know there's a desire to "unlock" him offensively, but I truly believe with another team he'll end up in the mold of a healthy Sean Coutourier which is a really valuable piece.

Too bad the NYR organization can't draft/develop a player(s) who honor the franchise and become the face of the franchise... maybe because it doesn't have one?

There really isn't a player from the 3rd pairing to the fourth line to the first line that is a true leader, that embodies the identity of they NYR?

People laugh at mentioning Messier.. and believe me i get it... but you need that type(S) in your lineup.. throughout the line up.

Seems like the MO is always waiting for "X" player from another team to sign/get traded to NY to save them?
Honestly I think if you get rid of the current leaders Lafreniere could be that guy, he's been a leader his whole career until the nhl. This i think is where this is heading where you have laf, cuylle, Othmann as your leaders, players that play that style that's bread for playoff success. I know people slack on Othmann but he's a lite version of the tkachuks, Miller's, Bennett of the league, he just needs to play and get comfortable

He's really not that good at defense. It's just something we kind of told ourselves.

I think if he was developed properly instead of just trying to force him to be something he's clearly not, we would be in a different situation. Standby what I said that if he's ever moved from here, we're going to witness a very useful player.

WTF look how good he looks

It's not like he never made any good plays for us. He had his moments. I'm sure if we watched the game we'd see a half dozen sequences that are all too familiar.

Cuylle deserves to be on the PP over Kakko. This seems non controversial. Kakko was the net front guy. Now he's not.

He's not better on the half wall than Chytil, and he is incapable of being making quick decisions and plays in the bumper because he's incapable of being quick. We've been over this many, many times in other arenas.

He's free to improve as a player at any time. In fact, I highly recommend it.

What exactly have they been trying to force him to be?

He started his first five years with a top 6 spot every year out of camp whether he deserved it or not.

Like a moth to a flame, like umbrellas follow rain, or any of the other plentiful co-determinants in the natural world, Kakko is fated to end up on the Carolina Hurricanes where he will become the exact checking *center* that L. Brooks has spent the better part of his career slobbering over. It’s just too on the nose for it not to happen. You’d do yourself good to imagine him hoisting the cup now. The Aztecs have it written on a rock somewhere.

Just here waiting for Laviolette and or Drury to get canned. One guy created the mess, the other guy won't change his tactics to mask the deficiencies

Yea, exactly. They continuously tried to make him be some offensive dynamo when it's been obvious for probably 3+ years now that's just not going to come to fruition.

Had they sat him on the third line, had him focus strictly on defensive responsibilities and added him to the penalty kill, we'd be much better off. Gallant actually did start doing that at some point but not long after he was canned.
