Would anyone do the following trade:

Mika Zibanejad --> Predators
Ryan O'Reilly + 2025 1st (Vegas or Tampa) --> Rangers

Mika waives his NMC to play in a no income tax state and gets to play on a line with fellow Swede Filip Forsberg and future Hall of Famer Steven Stamkos.

Preds are looking to shake things up. They get a center three years younger than O'Reilly that could get Stamkos going. Rangers get a more defensive-minded center that is better at driving possession. The trade frees up a PP1 spot for Lafreniere. O'Reilly is older but the Rangers get out of Mika's contract and get a low 1st round pick back. The Rangers save $4 million in cap space which helps them re-sign Shesterkin and Miller.

I've been mulling whether Nash would be interested in Mika for a few weeks now, although i don't think O'Reilly would be involved (maybe someone like Novak and a pick?). They splashed some cash in the off-season and it hasn't worked so far, they have some cap space, and are weak down the middle.
It would have to be a trade where we eat some cap hit, and we aren't getting his replacement back, but it would open up options for us going forward.

Well Novak would accomplish that. Novak problem in Nashville is that he isn’t a top six C. He comes here. He slots in bottom six behind Trocheck and Chytil. That makes sense. But also Nashville have a history of these one season wonder guys so who knows. You need to take Nyquist back for salary reasons, and once you add Lauzon or Fabbro (probably Lauzon) you pretty much have a salary match

Put them up against a real team in a big game that matters and that's where there's doubts that the right players can elevate their games to get the job done. Going into the season that was a my fear, and against Panthers, Caps it was evident. Last night perhaps a Fluke, but there was once again that lack of of best players elevating when they were slipping.

Jones needs to continue to play and develop amidst a largely irrelevant regular season.

We need all the options on the table, for the playoffs, fresh and having gotten reasonable minutes. You can't assume Lindgren won't improve, but you can't assume he will either. NYR must plan for every contingency.

There’s a reason 7 of the participants in the last 5 cup finals are from tax free states. It allows them to add players for less than they’d be getting elsewhere. 4 of the last 5 cup winners too.

This works the other way if you are traded there. If Mika (or any other Ranger) traded to a tax free state he gets a raise. There is no other way to look at it. He gets more money out of that contract in Tennessee.

Do you think it’s a coincidence that Stamkos and JAM went from Florida and Nevada to Tennessee? Why Stephenson went from Nevada to Washington. Etc. That’s why these teams are able to add better talent now.

Different tax report or not. You Net more from a 5 million dollar contact in Florida than you do in New York. These “discounts” are not benevolent

Laviolette may ultimately be the issue here. He has a trend of wearing out quickly after some initial success. 2024-25 is an all in year for the Rangers. If they fall short, I think Laviolette’s leash may start to get really short in the next 12 months.

Not expecting an answer from you on that one BTW. You know what allows teams to add players for good value deals? Winning. A lot of people said Edmonton had a pretty good offseason, re-signing Arvidson for an example on a good value deal and getting Jeff Skinner. They have pretty high taxes up there in Canada (though not as bad in Alberta as in Ontario or Quebec). Do you know why they were able to do this? Because those players saw the potential in winning.

Auston Matthews is the best earning NHL player, because he gets most of his money tax-free (because he resides in Arizona), but also gets all the ad-revenue from being the face of the biggest NHL franchise.

I just like to dunk on those 2 clowns. The real issue was Drury's refusal to include Kakko or Chytil, and neither guy really popping during the Kreider/Mika/Trouba window.

no, the overarching real issue was Eich insisted on specific medical procedure for his neck which had some limited history w/athletes, but I believe no track record w/NHL players.

This had to be done BEFORE any deal

That overrode any other consideration as to a deal

I'm intrigued whether this is really possible at this pointt in time.
Does asking the 'hard' questions get you answers and a good column/blog/podcast/whatever, or does it just get you access to the team reduced/removed.
None of these 'reporters' have the clout that sports jornos used to have when they had a major paper backing them.

I think the secret got out. The recent history speaks for itself. We also know it took the majority of the NHL GMs have just figured out how the salary cap worked and a lot have been late to the party. Yzerman doesn’t look so smart now that’s he’s in Detroit does he? I provided sample size of the most recent five years. If you want to go back further than five years to make your point, go right ahead. I’m looking at what is happening most recently and currently. LA struck lightning in a bottle with Quick and with getting Jeff Carter for nothing because he refused to ball with Columbus. Chicago and Pittsburgh were terrible and got hall of famers with their picks in the top 3. And again recently they aren’t looking too hot are they?

Teams who win draft well and find gems and don't overspend on huge UFA's. Because then the rest of the team wants huge UFA deals. Toronto f'd themselves with Tavares. Not because he wasn't worth that money (he wasn't but different issue) but then you immediately have 2 other players who said "ok if you're gonna spend that much on outside talent, we want more).

Igor is currently looking at panarin's deal and saying "my turn"


Yzerman hasn't drafted as well in detroit as he had in TB. No huge gems in the late rounds, and his top talent has gotten paid and his cap dried up because he tanked for "too long" and his top talent needed to get paid, before he was even in his window.
He also didnt ever get a 1st or 2nd overall.

Add Bedard to that roster? They make the playoffs last year without question. Replace Raymond w Stutzle? They make the playoffs.

Also he sucks at goalies. Which alot of GM's do.
