Our defense sucks. Most of you say that daily. Yet we have the best GA/G in the league.

So:

1. How bad does everyone else's defense suck, or
2. It's all our goalie. Who many of the same people say we shouldn't sign.

So, is the answer to get a lesser goalie and trade for some of the defenders on other teams that give up more goals?
The answer is that we are damned if we do and damned if we don’t.

The defense needs to be fixed. Igor can’t will this team to a Cup by himself. Offense comes from transition defense. We need at least one more top four defender, and really probably two positive possession defenders to really compete with the big dogs.

If we sign Igor to a $12M per contract, there is no chance we can add one of those guys.

If we don’t sign Igor to that contract, I still don’t trust this management team to identify and acquire the right player(s).

Our best chance is this year, assuming we can add a legitimate LD somewhere along the way.

They'll add a legitimate LD and play him on the third pair so that the #WARRIOR gets his.

Am I right in saying that Drury has not made one big time trade as a GM other than washed Kane and Tarasenko trades at the deadline? Otherwise it's been depth at the deadline. Reilly Smith is looking good. But it would be nice to make a non-deadline trade that makes sense for the team that would shore up the holes on defense. This team's forward group is good enough to win it all, their goalie is more than good enough to win it all, and their defense is good enough to win the draft lottery.

I think you need to define “big time trade” you could definitely say Buchnevich trade was a big time trade.

I think we’re going to have to trade Schneider or Mancini for an equivalent LHD

It’ll be all futile unless Zibs turns back the clock to 2019 or Chytil realizes his full potential

The team also just has to buy in to a 200ft game. We’re lazy and sloppy too often
Came here to post something similar. We need a stud LD. Somewhere around 4.5 or less on a 4 year or more deal.
Don’t want to include:
Chytl
Cuylle
Edstrom
Lafreniere

Everyone else including our top prospects should be in play.
In order to get, the organization will need to give.
Cap out is the tricky part.

I'm sure most teams start every phone call with Perrault and Schneider as the ask. Othmann is a distant 3rd but I have a feeling Othmann gets dangled this year.

I’d love to go all in on a top 4 LD. I’d even pay for a top pair guy. I don’t know who is out there though.

For those of you who don't follow baseball, there was an article that came out recently about how the Dodgers approached the World Series against the Yankees. The strategy was, literally, just play baseball. Put the ball in play, run the bases hard, and let the Yankees self destruct because they are so bad fundamentally. This culminated in exactly that, plenty of unforced errors gave the Dodgers an easy and humiliating 5 game win.

Can't help but think that's a word for word perfect strategy against the Rangers. Just play hockey against them. They'll fall apart all by themselves.

Unlike the Yankees, however, this feels like a straight player issue at this point rather than coaching. I don't know how you proceed from here. It's so bad.

That’s not how you beat the rangers.

you need a team that’s fast, has a heavy forecheck, good goaltending and good special teams.
You need elite talent at every level, forward and blue line, and it can’t just be one good line, the talent has to be on multiple lines.

Seriously the Florida panthers are one of maybe 2 teams who can do this.

The rangers don’t make unforced errors, they make forced errors. Giving the rangers time and space is asking for your team to give up 5-6 goals.

"fast" and "heavy forecheck" are doing a lot of work in this comment. a moderate forecheck is enough. above average speed is enough. just because the Rangers win some of those games on individual skill and goaltending doesn't make this any less true.

The Isles played literal caveman hockey with half an AHL roster and we were barely ahead until a fluke goal effectively put the game out of reach. That's not acceptable.

I don't think it's untrue that it takes a simple gameplan to beat the Rangers.

We made it to the ECF so we're trying to sell ourselves on the idea that only the Panthers can beat us.

The Panthers were the first team we played last year that plays hockey. The Capitals just sucked last year and were incapable and Carolina plays "first to 100 shot attempts."

We beat the worst team to make the playoffs in 30 years and team that couldn't get the SCF if you gave them guns and said "have fun," because like us, they're deeply flawed.

Any contender in the West would have beaten us too.

To be back to the example @Raspewtin gave, the Yankees sold themselves for years on "only Houston is beating us" and then the year Houston lost, the Yankees still lost to the first legit great them they played.
