to use a "breakout" - based on an arbitrary round number of points produced - as sole basis for whether we try to sign him is bad process.
Why? He isn’t taking pay cut. Why should we give him a raise if he doesn’t break it out.

Breakouts are like pornography. I can’t define it but I know when I see it. Lafreniere broke out last season. He earned a raise.

If Kakko doesn’t break out, he doesn’t deserve a raise. If he does break out, they can’t afford to pay his raise

if he scores between 40 and 50 points, with 35+ at evens strength, in 75+ games playing 3rd line minutes, and contributes to NYR success, he will absolutely have earned a raise and a contract.
