If the Rangers lose Brodzinski on waivers their center depth is complete shit. Like horrendous. Let’s play this out. Brodzinski is waived and gets claimed by SJ. Chytil gets hurt in game 10 and misses significant time. Who is playing 3C? BMB? Carrick? Jake L? Those are the freaking options guys without Brodzinski

They would make a trade, even if not immediately. They already showed last year they didn’t think Brodzinski was capable of playing 3C long term. I doubt he gets waived this time around since he spent almost all last year in the NHL but I wouldn’t be too concerned if he did he’s been waived and unclaimed like 6 times the last 2 years and nothing has changed since then.

I mean Trouba has already said it’s this cores last shot.
He’s gone unless he somehow has a career renaissance, but even then we still flip him for a younger player, we just get more back.

Think Jacob was overstating things a bit. His is the most overvalued contract on the team. His term ending also is coming up quick. I don't think he should be speaking for whatever Drury has in mind doing anymore than Larry Brooks trying to arrange hockey trades. If we're talking about the core in any case we should be clear about exactly who. If it's the vets---Lindgren's going too. Kreider---I don't think so. He's been more than doing justice to the $6.5 he's been getting. Mika--even if he has another subpar year has too much term left to his $8.5 mil per contract so that he'll be really, really hard to move. Panarin got 120 points last year. He only has 2 years left as well but I don't see him moving and I don't see Trocheck moving either----again he's more than earning his deal.

So the vets that who will be moving on that are making any kind of real money are Trouba and Lindgren.

Now, Suburban Phoenix. Then, Long Island
What's the difference if he doesn't? It's not like he's the difference between a cup and no cup. Can anyways find someone to play on the 4th line.
He’s a useful experienced NHL player. He had 19 points in 57 games last year. That’s a useful 4th line player who can slot in all over the lineup when needed.

If Brooks wasn't imagining things, I like the PP units they had at practice. I have always liked the idea of just playing your top 2 lines but with a supplement in there.

Kreider-Z-Smith
Chytil-Fox

Panarin-Tro-Laf
Othmann-Jones

and now you’re giving Reilly smith, a player who has been poor on the PP for basically his entire career, the same amount of pp time as Panarin.

I really like Mancini but it’s asking an awful lot of him to have him playing his offside with Fox.

The fact that Miller-Trouba is locked in really bums me out. The Lindgren injury is presenting a great opportunity to balance and optimize the defenseman we have:

Miller-Fox
Jones-Trouba
Mancini-Schneider

This defense needs an upgrade in the worst way.

A few takeaways so far

- Obviously the top half of the roster is essentially set. Of the guys battling for the bottom half the kids have impressed me the most. I like what Othmann has shown.. the physicality, the shot, we need a skill guy that's a pain in the ass to play against. The next few preseason games I'd like to see him next to Chytil and Kakko. If he can stick, Cuylle drops to the 4th line. Too many options for that line, where do you put all these guys? Edström I've liked the most of the bottom liners. Rempe's a wild card, I kinda like him over Vesey, Carrick, etc.. but they want those guys for the PK and someone needs to play center. It's too bad they haven't used Edström more in that role.

- I know it's preseason but Chytil looks as dynamic as any forward on the team. That 3rd line is an X-factor, if they can stay healthy they should feast on easier matchups

- 2 years ago Välimäki fell into Arizona's lap off waivers.. a couple years before that it was Gustav Forsling in Florida... maybe we get lucky this year and find something on the waiver wire in Lindgren's absence

Just picking up capable Dmen isn't going to help, you actually need to utilize them properly...

Jack Johnson became a cup winning 6th Dman in Colorado. Mikkola became a cup winning 6th(if not even better?) dman in Florida. Those guys didn't impress with us, but found their spots with other teams.

If we can't even find the proper spot for Trouba, how are we going to find one of those guys and fit them in?

There's no evidence to support this speculation. Yes, some players have gotten upset, taken their ball and gone home. Nothing I have seen from Edstrom suggests to me that he is that sort of person. And even if he is, he is under contract. He can't go back unless the Rangers allow it.

I think your estimation of what he would make in the SHL is very high.

According to this link, the average salary in the SHL is 110k. It may be a bit higher since this article was written, but not substantially so.

Simultaneously, your estimation of what he will make here is too low.

Not being on the team day 1 doesn't mean he will spend the entire year in the AHL. He will spend time on the NHL roster, and for every day he does, he will be earning his NHL salary.

People are really just making too much of the situation. There are factors outside Edstrom's control. I'm sure he's a big boy (in more than the literal sense) and I'm sure those factors will be explained to him in the event he is sent down. Life isn't always fair.
Why do kids go to college instead of getting a full time job after high school?

I think Bern is an alien. He's not making sense and talking about hockey in space
I don't really disagree. I just don't believe any of that will actually happen.
bold = glad we are on the same page
und = stranger things...

Also, my pt remains: competition of ideas.
If R mgmt doesn't listen, then I will take consolation prize of laughing in their face when I am proven right -- which is not all the time, but enuf

I firmly believe that you have to get over that "but we can't play a rookie, we're supposed to be a cup team!" mentality and just f***ing play your bottom six rookies instead of signing bad veterans

They're cheaper, you develop them that way, and they're often just damn better than the guy you pull off the scrap heap because "he has experience" (at sucking)

when year after year you send down your depth prospects and say "it sure is great to have depth waiting in the wings!" eventually they're gonna stagnate or leave.

Just play them. Stop overthinking shit.
This board pretty much universally bemoans spending 2nd, 3rd, 4th round picks at the trade deadline but good forbid the team utilizes waiver strategy at the start of the season to create or maintain depth internally when it’s free. Vesey and Carrick are exactly this type of depth players (and Brodzinski) who are known quantities who have specific roles. If not - meaning their contributions are substandard, then they are Bonino or Carpenter, and as we’ve seen by mid-season young players will take their spots. And it’s not like it will be time wasted if Edstrom or Rempe or Othmann or Berard were to spend more time this season in Hartford.

To have / demand it both ways (play prospects and maintain solid vets depth) is virtually impossible to accomplish.

…. Based on training camp so far and from last season, I would waive Brodzinski (he would clear) and rotate Carrick, Rempe, Edstrom & Vesey.
I’m pretty sure this is going to be the plan which also means that Othmann (who deserve consideration in his own right) is also going to Hartford.

I know it sucks for Lafreniere but I wouldn't be messing around with our first power play unit. It's one of the more lethal in the NHL and personally I don't think Smith, Chytil, Othmann or Jones come that near to the level of any of the 5 on that unit or Lafreniere. I don't see a reason to fix something that doesn't need to be fixed. The second unit in any case is just not going to get as much time as the first unit. Messing around with these units though will likely drop overall production.

I far as I am aware, none have been claimed.
Find out this afternoon.
They may all be on the Wolf Pack roster this season.

3 guys on waivers as they head to Hartford, Ben H, Jake and Brezile.
Missed your post. Apologies for the redundancy.

The issue is, PP1 is prone in getting extremely stale, especially in the playoffs. Playoff teams adjust fairly quickly to the same PP we run for nearly the full 2 minutes. It's so successful because Kreider is a master at tipping the puck. Mika's big blast was basically a non factor last year, for the amount of times he tries that a game, it's incredibly a low percentage shot, Laf should be there.

I don’t have the numbers but I’m pretty sure there’s a significant dropoff in PP1 against playoff teams during the season, especially top PKs. Gotta get Mika off the half wall

Rangers scored 11 power play goals in 16 playoff games. Where it went stale (we had 10 of those power play goals in the 10 games we played between the Caps and Canes) was against the Panthers who were the best team we faced and by a margin the best defensive team and best penalty kill we faced.....and it goes without saying the deeper a team goes in the playoffs the better the teams get and the Panthers giving Fox a harder time with his knee issue didn't help.

The issue with Mika last year wasn't really his power play production or his penalty killing. His 5v5 throughout the year was well below expectations. If there's one guy maybe to cut out of the first unit it would be him. Still the current power play works the way it does because it's easier for the 4 right shots to whip the puck around to each other with one time passes and Mika and Trocheck give us two face-off guys and when Lafreniere occasionally has got some time there he's on his backhand more. He's also better suited to take Trocheck's bumper spot than Mika's.
