I think Mika gets traded at the 19 draft.

His value will be at its highest especially if he has a good year. A 1B/2A center at cheap money may can get us a legit defender of similar age

If the Rangers wanted to sign him long term, they would have.

But only if Hayes is ready to sign. Of course he wants to stay here if he likes the terms, but right now I understand he wants to make that decision next year.

On the other side, the Rangers will have room for further evaluation, there are things on the ice he can do better.

Gorton wasn’t willing to give him a long term contract for a reason. I like Hayes but if Chytil or Andersson pan out, he’s not needed. We also have Spooner and Names for 2 years as potential stop gaps.

Gorton will have multiple 1st round picks again next draft. Writings on the wall for Hayes.

Some interesting news that could be in the Around The NHL thread BUT is also relevant here. Per Bill Daly, it looks like Seattle might not come in the league until 2021-22 (or maybe 2022-23 if they are dumb and miss an entire season again lol).

What does this mean? On one hand Chytil, Anderson, and anyone else who plays this year will not be exempt, on the other hand it's not that big of a deal because other than Ziba and Skjei, Rangers don't have anyone signed for that season so basically it's a wash. Lundqvist, Smith, Staal, Shattenkirk are also done by then. so basically plenty of slots to be taken. I fully expect one or two of Seguin/Panarin/Karlsson to be on the Rangers protected list.

Nieves New York Rangers 2018-19 player preview: Boo Nieves

I think there is no need to rush Andersson into NHL just to play him on a 4th line. 4th line is usually an energy line, and the way Andersson currently skates I just don't see it. I think having a good 4th line center is important and Boo fits that role perfectly. At the end of the season we can either keep him or possibly trade him for a pick and promote Fontaine, but I see no issue having both play on the 4th line by the end of the season, that would give us extra center depth, this 4th line could get even stronger next season when Gettinger joins them. 3 players with good PK ability, and ability to play physical grinding style, win faceoff and all 3 can play center if needed.

So I would start the season with 4th line of Beleskey-Nieves-Meskanen and maybe Lettieri as the extra forward. Fogarty and Holland are not good enough. Not sure what to make of Lindqvist, but I have a feeling he goes back to Sweden after a dozen AHL games.

Then maybe Meskanen gets promoted by the end of the season and Fontaine takes his spot or Beleskey is traded by the deadline.

When it comes to Hayes, it's more about what he wants to do, because the Rangers want to sign him long term. But Hayes isn't sure if he wants to spend his prime years with a club that may not become a cup contender for the next 4-5 years.

So with this 1 yr deal he has the option next year to try his luck elsewhere, if the Rangers suck. Smart dude...
I think you have this backwards. Hayes has made it pretty clear he wants to stay. The Rangers MAY want to sign him long term.Depends on a) the development progress of young players and b) Hayes performance.

I think it's more likely the league is spreading misinformation in an attempt to remove Seattle's entrance as a weakness in negotiations. You can't have an expansion team set to start but they can't because of a lock out.

If it wasn't a lockout year, Gary would have everyone speaking the company line guaranteeing a smooth start. You don't want to kill momentum with sales. But the leverage in negotiations is too important.

What Daly said was that the league isn’t married to a 20-21 start. It’s just providing some wiggle room by not laying out a timeline for something that’s not officially a done deal.

Oof I checked out in May and totally forgot they are in full rebuild.

I’m going to lol if we start Hajek out of position to accommodate Smith on LD.

with skjei, hajek, rykov, lindgren, miller down the left side and not nearly the depth on the right side. having hajek successfully shift to RD would be the best thing that could happen

Why not have Miller switch to RD he is new to the D anyway as he used to be a forward a year or 2 ago.

I’m just saying we’d better not be doing primarily to fit Smith back in. Lindgren or Rykov? Fine.

No, we'll start him out of position to accommodate Staal and everyone will blame Smith.

How about... they’re doing it because having a quality up and coming RD would be a big help to the organization. If he can do it, it doesn’t matter why, but let’s find out if he can.

Yeah, I don't see the big deal here. He was at LD in the first Traverse game, and he was primarily a LD for Saskatoon and Regina.

This seems like the same type of overreaction as when we played Buchnevich at C in Traverse.

NHL RD - ADA, Shattenkirk, Pionk, Smith

NHL LD - Skjei, Staal's corpse

Not sure where the idea that this team needs help at RD (as opposed to LD) comes from.
