I've gotten the sense that while they are very happy with what Rooney and others have done, they aren't completely married to them either. I would imagine there's more comfort with an established bottom six player, than more of the journeyman type who surprise you with their play in the role.
Having said that, I don't see them hellbent on making a deal there. Just something they are tracking.
Right now, they are focused on getting Panarin back, along with Trouba, getting Chytil at full speed again, getting Kakko back and potentially adding Kravtsov, or even Barron.
