McDonagh-Shattenkirk
Skjei-Smith
Grizzlymitts-DeAngelo

Staal can take his 5.5 million and buy good seats.

Personally, I wouldn't mind being bad next year. Don't think we will be, even if we don't add a center (I think we will), but it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. Would be fine missing the playoffs and having even a minuscule chance at Dahlin.

Completely agree.

I don't see McDonagh being here past his current contract.

Also, Andersson will be a center, IMO.

I still feel antsy about trading McDonagh. It opens up yet another huge hole in the lineup and people around this board seem to be underrating him a lot lately. He will be sorely, sorely missed if they let him walk unless they trade him for some big haul.

I think he'd continue to be a top pairing defenseman and very effective into his 30's. Some of it just depends on what contract he's demanding.

going to be interesting to see what they do with free agency. Defense could be hugely revamped and completely different. Will have to see what they feel comfortable with doing at center...

Here's an interesting one.

RNH for Nash

Nash goes and helps them next year. It also gives Edmonton cap space to help pay McDavid next offseason. Edmonton sheds the $6m per season they owe him.

RNH comes in with a new opportunity and plays 2C. 24 year old center

Same here.

If that happens, I could see lot more players being traded as well..Zucc would unfortunately be at the top of that list.

How much is RNH contract? He gets paid more than Nash?

Just like with the Hank contract, I just can't see this team not paying McDonagh what he wants. Might not be a great contract the last few years, but he'll have earned a bad last few years with the Rangers.

And someone will have to play wing if those are our top 6 forwards, could be Chytil or Andersson. Doesn't really matter though.

I just question whether or not the Rangers will feel comfortable giving McDonagh what he likely wants (7M AAV over 8 years) at the age of 30.

I think whether or not we sign Shattenkirk will be very telling about the direction Gorton wants to take this team.

I'm not quite sure what direction this team wants to go for next year still. They've clearly restocked the cupboard a bit and shed some cap. After playing around with the numbers assuming the contracts aren't outrageous, they COULD fit all of Smith and Shattenkirk under the cap and roll out a roster of...

Kreider - Mika - Buch
Vesey - Thornton - Nash
Miller - Hayes - Zucc
Grabner - Boo? - Fast
Pumps

Mac - Shattenkirk
Skjei - Smith
Staal - DeAngelo

Hank
Kinkaid? (or other backup option)

I know a lot of people won't love spending that much in free agency but that's a team IMO that can 100% compete to come out of the East. Thornton I had pegged at 2 years @ 5 each, Shatty at 6 x 6.5, and Smith 4 x 4. Mika re-signed at 5 x 5.25. They take a bit of a dip up front with no Oscar plus Thornton downgrade from Stepan but the jump up in defense from going from Holden and Girardi to Shattenkirk and DeAngelo is huge.

Just my two cents but this could be a restock the cupboard with those picks and acquisition of DeAngelo while still competing this year.

You say a #3C, I think a #1C.

I can't see Hayes at the 2.

Even with Stepan we've lacked the "true" #1C. If Zibanejad can replace Stepan offensively then it's status quo in that regard. It's also not impossible that Zibanejad takes a step forward.

I'm not thrilled with Hayes as the 2C, but his offensive output is there already, assuming he can repeat. He, too, could also potentially take a step forward.

My point is that if the team acquired a legitimate 2 or 3 center, they're probably looking pretty similar to last year. And that's before we consider any changes defensively.

Nash doesn't want to go to Canada

There's a long ways to go until the puck drops for next season...lots of things the Rangers could be doing

That said yeah I don't think they're interested in tanking, I think they're interested in turning over some of the roster and having the space to make moves that come up

The issue for me is that if they're "rebuilding" while still being competitive, then being competitive will always take over. At the deadline, if they're sniffing a playoff spot, then they'll buy and try and make a run. They won't try and accumulate some assets for guys on expiring deals or who might not be long-term options.

They could sign Shattenkirk and Smith, then take Thornton and Marleau on sweetheart deals and probably be a top team in the east, but how does that help the rebuilding aspect of things? All it does is play the organization out of a lottery pick next year.

They're not going to be bad with guys like mcdonagh skjei Shattenkirk DeAngelo miller Hayes Zibby Zucc Nash and hank.

Hank needs to be ALOT better though. He can't have another season like he just did

I fully expect another center coming in. I expect zibanejad to take another step. Vesey Miller Buchnevich all will be better. Grabs and Fast are solid.

I'm excited about the D. Shattenkirk DeAngelo will bring a lot of what we don't have. Will be interesting what we do with Holden and if we bring smith back which we should. Russian kid there too

I'd rather sign Hanzal to a 2 or 3 year deal than sign Thornton. Hanzal is a straight up shut down beast. Would fit in very well behind Ziba/Hayes. Give Hanzal the hard matchups, Ziba slightly softer matchups, and Hayes sheltered minutes.

Mika and Lias know each other?

I agree with this. If we don't sign him, you know it's just a matter of time before we just going full speed ahead in another direction.

Kreider-Zibanejad-Zuccarello
Miller-Hayes-Buchnevich
Nash-Hanzal-Fast
Vesey-???-Grabner

Might be forgetting someone.
