So then you believe, definitively, that every year the Rangers aren't drafting in the top-5 is a failure?

Why aren't more teams doing this?

How do you explain the lack of success from other teams that have tried this (NYI, Colorado, Edmonton until McDavid was gifted to them, etc...)

Is it possible that you're applying a metric of success in hindsight to what you want to, and not what you don't want to?

What other things do these teams have in common?

What do the things that these teams beat have in common?

Can you readily admit that it takes more than what you think it does to win a cup, and if not, and you're some hockey guru genius, why aren't more NHL teams buying the formula from you, or hiring you into their FO as a strategy guy? It does seem easy.

For the sake of HF bandwith, I will not be responding to you in this conversation any longer.

Just try and make sense of what I'm saying to you.

If the Rangers trade Stepan for let's say Dvorak and the 7th OA, then that is exactly what the Rangers are doing. Going for their franchise talent that is only available at the top of the draft.

Smith being traded to Calgary is indeed happening, per Bobfather.

I don't know if I want to have Duclair back. It's awkward to have a prospect right back but he's now 100% less promising and likely 1-2 seasons' opportunity away from being a bust.

Drawing conclusions that aren't there but I wonder if ARI trades Smith and then this rumored smoke around ARI and Stepan also includes Raanta.

I believe that Skapski meets exposure requirements, but I could be wrong.

One goaltender who is under contract in 2017-18 or will be a restricted free agent at the expiration of his current contract immediately prior to 2017-18. If the club elects to make a restricted free agent goaltender available in order to meet this requirement, that goaltender must have received his qualifying offer prior to the submission of the club's protected list.

Skapski does. Halverson is automatically exempt because he is a 2nd year pro

As @FriedgeHNIC mentioned, ARI and CGY are indeed working to finalize a trade involving goaltender Mike Smith.

Why the hell are the Flames interested in Smith over Raanta? The Coyotes must be throwing in something else to get rid of that contract.

I'm not sure what the flames are doing, really. They've had enough 1B/2A goaltenders go through their team to form a bobsledding team since Kipper retired and now they're going to invest in Mike Smith alongside their secondary options in Elliot and Johnson.

Speculation I've read is that they'll let both Elliot and Johnson walk.
