How about this?
Derek Stepan to Montreal for Alex Galyenchuk, #26
Rick Nash (retain 30%) to Buffalo for Evander Kane, #37 (Buffalo 2nd), mid prospect
Marc Staal (30% retained - ie $1.710.000 through 2021) + #26 to Florida for Nick Bjugstad
A Rantaa, #21 and #145 to Calgary for #16 and #109
Use an asset to have LV take Holden

you dont trade players like Kreider.

hes on a good contract, is still in his prime...you dont trade players like kreider..you almost never win those trades.

He always posts that list of players as his 'new core'.

It's hilarious that Vesey is on there.
It's absurd that Kreider isn't.

Kreider is arguably this team's best forward.

I was so impressed with Honka watching him closely in the WCHs. He scored an OT goal for Dallas in the NHL, someone should embed that video. The kid is pretty sick. I was worried that his play in the AHL would set back his puckmoving game a bit, but it's been the opposite.

I've given hope for Trouba, but who knows. Trouba also played in the WCHs -- some experts really questioned him. I didn't see much of the US, a good ex D expert for Swedish TV said something like "It's surprising -- given his play in the WCHs -- that Trouba is seen as a star in the NHL. He haven't been impressive here". I just think there are many strong aspects of his game, albeit he still might have some rough areas.

I love Troy Stecher in Vancouver. Van will be a mess the coming years and that's always hard for young Ds, to get shelled every night. But I think he has potential to be the type that is everyone's darling in just a few years. Elusive skater that is hard to catch, very strong with the puck under pressure, very good offensive skills.

Not saying the above will be available. Think Dallas has a guy in Klingberg that just can take all offensive RD minutes. It just don't think it makes a ton of sense for them to have a real 1-way O defensemen like Honka behind him when the entire lineup is a mess in other areas. But who knows, NHL GMs usually are contentment with putting a flawed product on the ice. Chevy can sit around doing nothing with Trouba, wouldn't surprise me one bit. Vancouver has a ton of holes up front, defense don't look that horrible with Edler, Tanev and the Finn. Would they deal Stecher for a good young forward? I would give hat up for him.

Who else might even remotely be available? Cody Ceci? He isn't as horrible as many claim. Actually played some good hockey when I saw him this season. But he was definitely the Sens D struggling the most under hard pressure against us. I am just listing potential names here.

Who else? Winnipeg has three RDs. I've mentioned Tyler Myers. Would of course need to get clearance from the docs on him. But if you could get that? He was -- much -- better for Winnipeg than Buffalo. I actually think he potentially could be a great fit next to McDonagh who is so strong individually and gives his partner so much support. Myers is very good as long as nobody get a step on him. Heavy RH shoot. Not a bad passer. Could see him stepping into a lot of scoring chances blasting heavy bombs next to McD. And do really well with his 6'8 reach defensively next to McD. Skating is a concern and if he is playing with a bum back -- he could fall off a cliff. Not a horrible contract if he can play up to his capacity.

I can't think of many other RDs... We can't be choosy...but no to Shatty... ;)

Smith can play the right side. Re-sign. He played great for us and plays with an edge.
Sign Shatty, another RHD.
Bereglazov is an option but he is not a starter at this point. You cant just slot him as if he is a definite. Cheap vet RHD.

Ummm,

Pionk, Neal
Bereglazov, Alexei

both are knocking on the door, and they say Hi! We will re-sign Smith, he and Skjei are a great pair.

We have 1 RHD who has NHL experience and even then, he doesn't have a ton (and isn't an everyday NHL player.)

Even if they re-sign smith and Bear gloves makes it on the right side, they have an opening.

Can pencil in Bereglazov as the 3rd pairing guy. But yes, RHD will be added

You don't "pencil in" anyone to an NHL slot without so much as a training camp under their belts. Don't count on anyone until they show they belong.

Until I see evidence to the contrary, I believe Shattenkirk is the target, especially if Stepan doesn't get dealt for an RHD.

Smith and Holden allegedly can play RHS. Skjei took some shifts there too.

Smith (assuming re-signed) and Bereglazov play the right side.

Bereglazov at least played the entire POs on the left for MM. I just have a very very very hard time seeing him play the right side in the NHL. Like can anyone think of a bigger LHS stay at home D playing on the RIGHT side in the NHL the last handful of years? Has there been one? There is a reason for that, would be a huge handicap. I just can't see it.

How many Ds haven't we had come in that supposedly could play the off side? McD? Skjei? All those guys, it hurt them a ton to move over.

The Rangers signed Bereglazov with every intention of him making the roster. He'll need to have an incredibly bad camp to not be one of the RD opening night. His contract has an out-clause back to the KHL if he doesn't make the NHL.

With the buyout if G. And the possibility of Klein retiring where does that leave us in terms of cap space.

Adam Herman tweeted there will be around $15m. We could sign Shattenkirk, Smith, Zibanejad + Fast/Lindberg.

Hopefully we're looking to shed a little more somewhere and create some space.

Trade some package involving Stepan for Galchenyuk+Beaulieu. Sign Chucky.

Boom. Stepan and Girard protection slots filled.

If I were betting I'd bet that the Rangers make sure they have enough bodies for some competition in camp between Bereglazov and someone else so they feel comfortable with either of those guys being the supposed 3rd pairing RD and the other being the 7th D in case the first struggles

You're not totally handing the guy a spot but you give him a good chance while also having a decent backup plan or idea that he'll be ready to jump into the lineup later in the season

i still think Vegas is going to take fast from us. hes the best option available on our squad.
Girardi buyout doesnt show signs of trades or big signings to me.
Please dont blow all our money on shattenkirk

I want no part of Evander Kane.

Kane is an interesting player..

on the 1 hand, his assets...size...speed...shot...physicality...they would all fit this team like a glove...hes a lot like kreider in that hes got all the tools in the world to be a perennial 30 goal, 70 point player.

but unlike Kreider, hes got his head in the wrong place...Kreider at least tries...and you never hear about outside distractions....

Id take Kane if we are sending a bad contract back like Staal in addition to whatever it takes to get him...
