Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

If Marchand is brought in even on a bad contract like the one reported it's different then Dubas bringing in perennial losers like Marleau and Thornton. Marchand is a winner and the asshole the Leafs need to drag their stars into a fight and really show them how to win.

He won't put up with the country club atmosphere. He will be in Matthews and Nylanders face when he needs to. Marleau and Thornton were vibes guys not grinders/winners
As good as the Rat is at inspiring his teammates I don’t see the likes of Captain Arrogant being anything but off put having someone brought in to lead the team something he obviously can’t do, I’ll never see him as anything but the guy who chocked and blamed his teammates for his shortcomings……

Leafs could probably signed Fabbro for half what Carlo is making and use Carlo to address middle 6 forward.

Reilly. Ekblad (jk)
OEL. Tanev
McCabe. Fabbro
Benoit
Projections for Fabbro are at higher numbers than retained Carlo. Somewhere around 4.5 x 3?

But you could probably both Perbix and Fabbro for less than what Ekblad will get.

A Carlo move would surprise me given his short tenure and acquisition cost, but the concussion history is real.

I’d love to hear the Leafs linked to more guys (I’ve only really consistently heard Marchand Mangiapane and Tanev….all LS wingers).

Going to have to give up some quality pieces if we’re looking to acquire a middle six center. If Carlo is in the works, I’d be all over McLeod.

To Toronto: Ryan McLeod
To Buffalo: Brandon Carlo + Bobby McMann

I’ve been trying to make a roster with this and then the Tippett/Woll swap and signing Ekblad/Mangiapane/Tanev and I can’t do it without using Domi at 1RW and Benoit-OEL 3rd pair which for me should be non starters.

It would work well with Fabbro though.

Why are the Leafs giving up Carlo now? I must have missed an article.

He's a reliable top 4 defenseman on a good contract. He's a right shot and is similar to what Treliving has brought in, in-terms of height and ability to block shots and defend.
You just said why.

If they can bring in Ekblad or Fabbro he’s suddenly their best chance to acquire a C.

Carlo could be moved

It makes the most sense to be at least open to it even if it's not your first option. It's about being creative and flexible. We don't have a lot of movable assets and the free agent market is thin at our position of need (center). If you can sign a top 4 defenseman and move Carlo for a #2 center, that's standard Kaldor–Hicks efficiency.

I know that this is pie in the sky, and I have raised this question here once before.

Sign Marner 1 x $19M with a limited NTC. He gets bank for a year and allows the Leafs to acquire assets at the TDL.

It would obviously mean a step back for a season.
Kids, let the above post be an example for you to please, please don't do drugs.

Thank You.

Here's a guy I completely forgot about until the main board thread, Sammy Blais. I wanted to give him a shot last year with Berube coming in, Blais played his best under him.

He was 3rd on the Calder Cup winning Canucks in scoring. Brings a physical presence and a bit of offense. I'd love to have him on the 4th line, I think he could surprise some people

Is it possible that Carlo could be part of the Marner to Vegas stuff in order to bring one of Karlsson or Hertl (and maybe something else) back?

He could fill in one of the RD spots left by Pietrangelo.

It just seems like a counter-intuitive move to make for the Leafs. You create a large hole in the defense and replace it with a guy that will likely not play a full 82 in Ekblad and has put a lot of miles on the body.

You're almost better to just spend the money on Tavares and create a scoring by committee atmosphere and spread the minutes on the power play.

You can sign both Ekblad and Tavares and use Carlo to bring in a forward to spread out offense as you suggested.

You're kind of not, because at that point, you're basically "running it back" with the term.

Look how the Florida D was put together. There's always another option; you just have to take a chance on some guys or maybe take an iffy contract and hope they put it together.

I'm open to Treliving doing something interesting to get me excited again. We had a couple summers of Brad when he was with the Flames. I have next to no attachment to anyone here, be bold. We've been risk averse and it's leading to disappointment, don't be afraid, were definitely busting continuing the course. A slight retool to recoup some assets or doing something new would make me more drawn in this year.

Another year of low risk low reward would be a very dull season. That's not going to be a serious season, how are we going to beat Florida by running it back without Mitch and by adding Mangiapane and Jeannot or something.

Tbh, if you repurpose him for some forward help then take a run at Gavrikov in free agency, I wouldn't hate that.

There is a rumor that Marner was spotted in Vegas looking at houses.

I'd be telling Vegas to make a deal or face tampering charges.

Found it -

As much as I’d love to see the Leafs grow a pair, I can’t imagine the p***yfoots at MLSE going after the hard ass leadership at Vegas like that.

It’s like Mr. Roger’s trying to threaten Chuck Norris
