For me, the Marchand deal looks like $7m cap hit with $2.5m in performance bonuses and $12M upfront signing bonus this July 1st.

Normally, I wouldn't want a 4th year, but actually having a 4th year might make a buyout more friendly (if there is a fair bit of money in that 4th year), if it comes to it, given LTIR isn't an option.


Edit: The variance between salary and signing bonus might be too high here, so perhaps only $10 m.

It is, I really dont want him on the team.

Sucks we couldn't find a way to win and look like we will have to resort to bringing in Marchand a guy we have all hated and whose owned us bad.

Id rather just go the CAR approach and sign a bunch of 3rd liners for 1-2 year deals at reasonable cap hits then give a gross over pay to any UFA this year.

You would kick the bonus money to the next year in overages, and with the cap going up, it would be less of a strain.

Also, if he doesn't achieve the bonus, for whatever reason, the cap hit will hopefully be less of an issue because if it's an injury issue, I don't think we can bury him on LTIR, given that he signed over the age of 35.

The over 35 rule only effects retirements. You can place a guy on LTIR regardless of his age and he comes off the cap.

I'm fairly certain we had someone in here a couple of days ago saying that wasn't the case, given he's over 35 when signing the contract.

If he retires his cap hit definitely stays on...if he's put on LTIR...now I'm not sure because I'm seeing conflicting info on that.

I mean, is it a lot different than trading a 13th overall pick to move Marleau, signing Mrazek trading back in the draft to fix it and then trading a 2nd for Lyubushkin/to get rid of our Ritchie signing?

The biggest thing that Tree has done that wasn't good has been Laughton...I liked him as a winger but not as a 3C solution.

Exactly, It shows you how hard it actually is to become good in the NHL, and some fans want to "rebuild again" because they feel like Toronto is entitled to win a championship. You can have good teams and not win, it happens & would suck.

The topic was "we should trade Matthews". Cutting loose a 28-29 year old 1C in his prime. Because they haven't won yet is silly and emotional thinking.

Toronto has good players for another 6-7 years if they are lucky to retain em, As long as they are continuously making the playoffs why would people want to "rebuild" for the unknown.

Keefe is obviously familiar with Holmberg and can replace Haula for much less, and the Leafs get a middle 6 C with possibly a bit more upside.

Rossi or Mactavish or Beniers are options to target.

Get the 2C which sets you up for the next decade.

Based off what Zegras got, I don’t think Rossi would cost much more tbh. I would take a chance on him.
